BLUESMAN RECEIVES HONOR Legendary Houston blues musician, Lightnin' Sam Hopkins comes to life on March 15, 1912 in Centerville, TX. In the 1920s he moves to The Bayou City and lives here until his death at 69 on January 30, 1982. A statue of Lightnin' Hopkins stands in Crockett, but the only public marker that ties him to Houston is his headstone in Forest Park Cemetery. Houstonian Eric Davis visits Hopkins' grave with his daughter, but discovers his faded headstone covers with grass. To his astonishment Eric declares, This guy has done so much for the blues internationally and locally and regionally it was kind of sad for me to see that there's nothing in Houston to honor him. This leads Davis, who is a Lightnin' Hopkins fan for more than a decade, to form a campaign to fund a historical marker to honor the late Bluesman. In fall 2010, the Texas Historical Commission honors him with an historical marker at the corner of Dowling and Francis in the Third Ward. This is very appropriate because in the old days as he rides a city bus up and down Dowling Street Hopkins sings and plays his guitar to entertain riders. Soon Lightnin' Hopkins' place in Houston history is for the entire world to see and admire.

SUPER BOWL XLIV REIGNS SUPER IN RATINGS
Washington, D.C. struggles with 3 feet of snow. This slush fund of white frost may have a lot to do with Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV being the most watched TV show in television history with 106.5 million viewers. Our eyes glue to TV sets as Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints enter their first Super Bowl ever and defeat the lion-hearted Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 33-17. The streets of the French quarter fill with jubilant fans. This surpasses the former most-watched TV program ever, M-A-S-H's show finale in 1983 with 105.9 million viewers.

TRAFFIC COPTER LANDS IN HIGHWAY Metro Networks fixed-wing aircraft that covers traffic for CBS Radio all-news KYW-1060 Philadelphia, PA quickly becomes its own breaking news tie-up on Monday, February 1, 2010. A low oil pressure indicator forces pilot Frank Bove to make a brave landing of his spacecraft in the middle of the New Jersey Turnpike. Neither Bove nor reporter Mike Lankford suffers injuries in the mishap.

RED JONES (Carrollton, GA) Subject: your columns. Enjoy reading your material although I don't know many of the people. 61 years in the business and still on the air. So many of the guys I worked with are gone. I'm 78 and still have a ball doing mornings on 50,000 watt WKNG in Georgia. Pull my own music (traditional country and bluegrass) and have complete control of my show. No management (been there done that) no meetings. 10AM and I'm on my way back home. New marriage and life is good. Red Jones, (KILT, WQXI, WFOM, Ga. radio Hall Of Fame, WKNG.) Anyone on the air longer?

CHERI FALCHETTI (Pittsburgh-Kittanning, PA) Hi Jim, This is going back to the 1960s. My Mother and I lived literally across the street from the radio station (KNUZ-1230) off of Chenevert. "Boot Eye Boot Boot" was literally the first word I could spell! (that's awful isn't it?) Anyway, I left Houston in '93, moved to Pennsylvania (north of Pittsburgh actually). Yes, weather shock as well as culture shock! But I do make the trip to Houston as often as I can. I'm the only one that escaped. I still have family in Texas. Cheri

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#775) February 08, 2010 [Monday] Jim: You are a great link in the chain of communications, so thanks for mentioning the sudden passing of a great radio talent in Paul Williams. The problem with leaving an area after working there several years, you lose contact with those men and women who helped make their radio station a success. It's unfortunate that we don't keep in touch with past associates as I always remember personal notes that Paul would send now and then. Had it not been for your JRRR, I would not have known about him and others with whom you keep us informed. Sally is a sweet lady and my condolences to her and all of Paul's family. We never know when the ultimate Station Manager, the Lord, will call us upstairs, but no doubt He has some clients he wants Paul to take care of. God be with you. Gary DeLaune

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio February 03, 2008 [Wednesday] Issue #773. Jimbo...may I echo several things in your February 3 issue? First, a sincere 'yo también' to Frank Haley's comments about Kenny Dowe...he was a great compadre during my Charlie & Harrigan daze at KLIF during the mid-60s, an unsung radio-guru who has the record to prove his broadcast moxie...and yes, I believe Gordon would agree, an heir-in-spirit to the Great One. Never had the pleasure of meeting Michael O'Shea, but have heard nothing but kewl things about him during his tenure after Ron Chapman and I went our separate ways from The Mighty 1190. Don Keyes is another one of those quiet heroes who made the McLendon national phenomenon the unique entity it was from the 50s through much of the 60s...as national program director, he was an able helmsman for Gordon for many years, sadly passing from the scene several years ago. Finally, the ending quote from the incomparable Tennessee Williams, "Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose," is closely paralleled by Kurt Vonnegut in a salient statement he made in 1994 during a lecture series in San Angelo that I was privileged to hear...(when asked about the marriage of pessimism and hope in his novels)..."We don't know what good news is, or what bad news is. We only pretend to. We learn very early to echo the enthusiasm of those around us." Your 'radio-as-it-was pal,' Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas - KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee; advertising/PR freelance writer, voice talent

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, Radio people are often over-wordy...no surprise that you have to cut down or edit some emails. Actually, I'm not watching TV now but I'm checking out a website. The son of one of my old regular WFAA MusicRadio listeners has created a website for 57 Nostalgia Place. When he was a young boy, he and his dad used to listen to the show. He says the show became the basis of his knowledge for pop, Rock’n’Roll, and old top 40 music. Address is
www.57nostalgiaplace.com if you ever have a chance to take a look. His dad taped the show almost every week. No telling what is likely to pop up. Best, Bud

TRIVIA ANSWER: Gladys Knight's Pips name comes from her manager/cousin James [Pip] Patten. Later on, Gladys mentions that it stands for Perfection In Performance.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Recent demise. Learned that we have lost two more from our music-biz: (1) The third of four original "Chi-Lites" has died. Robert Lester on 1/22/2010, leaving Marshall Thompson as sole survivor of this R/B group, known for hits, "Have You Seen Her" & "Oh Girl" from '71-72 era; & (2) Shirley Collie, born in Mo 1931 & died 1/27/2010. She was known for her country hit, "Dime A Dozen" in '61 & duets w/Warren Smith & Willie Nelson. She had been married to the late DJ, Biff Collie, of Houston & Long Beach as well as to Willie Nelson. ONE OF HOUSTON'S MOST BELOVED RADIO BROADCASTERS IS GONE Paul Williams is one of if not the finest people that I know in radio or anywhere else. He and Sally stop by our table at the Houston Radio Reunion last year. Take their picture and we chat for a long time. So good to finally see them in person after so many email conversations since 2005. We chat by email almost every single day. Paul and Sally have reservations at the JRRR table at the recent Texas Radio Hall of Fame but never make it to the event. At least I do have a snapshot of them from last year's HRR. Paul is such a wonderful person, plus a fantastic radio communicator. In the Sizzlin' Sixties he is known as the Wild Child on KNUZ-1230. For years Paul is Senior Account Executive at Univision Radio here in Houston, TX. Paul Williams' radio history includes KGKB [Tyler, TX] 1956; KDOK-1330 [Tyler] 1958 - Tall Paul; KILE-1400 [Galveston, TX] 1960; KNUZ-1230/KQUE FM [Houston, TX] 1960-1973; KTRH-740/KLOL FM [Houston] 1973; KRBE FM [Houston] 1975; KILT-610/KILT FM [Houston] 1980; KODA-1010/KODA FM [Houston] 1983; KPRC-950 [Houston] 1987 and Univision Radio [Houston] 1992 to the present.

JOE FORD (Houston-Shenandoah, TX)
Subject: Paul Williams. Jim, I just got a call from Chuck Scott telling me Paul Williams died! Terrible news. Don't know any more at this time but maybe you can find out what's going on? Chuck had no other info. Perhaps Walt (Hammock) is the one to talk with. I called Arch (Yancey) and told him. I'll try Dave Ward and see if he knows. You know, Jim...I see Paul from time to time but really don't know much about his personal life. Chuck said they found him at his apartment. I knew he had Lupus and some heart trouble but that's the extent of my information. Very sad. Paul was a great guy and will be missed by all who knew him. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry. Joe Ford Voiceworks; Shenandoah, Texas

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Paul Williams Passed away today. I have no details other than that. Just that I am very sad at the passing of a wonderful man and radio legend in Houston. I really don't know any more that what you have in your email. I've heard the funeral service will be in Tyler and that they found him today...apparently some copy was missing and when Paul didn't answer someone went to look for him and found him dead. Sad day indeed.

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benavides, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. My condolences to the family and friends of Paul Williams. My friend for over 35 years. I loved him! May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace! Adios, mi amigo! Goodbye to the Wild Child! Until we meet again! Chumbe Salinas

ARCH & JANET YANCEY Subject: Paul Williams. Paul and Sally are very good friends of ours. We are greatly saddened at the news of his death. Back in the '60s Paul and Arch are roommates at Preston Villa Apartments. They are joined later by Dave Ward. To this day all three have remained good friends. We have many fond memories of Paul and Sally Williams. We send our sympathy to Sally and Paul's family and will keep them in our prayers.

JAN CASE (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. I just can't get my head around the fact that now Paul is gone, too. He just came to my husband's (Ed Case's) Memorial Service on January 9th and looked fine! Soon the entire KTRH Sales staff will be in Heaven. Chet is gone, Max is gone, Ed is gone, have no idea where Dino is and Max Cohen is gone, too. They were surely a wonderful and unique group of individuals. I wonder if Max is having Sales Meetings up there?! An entire generation of Houston radio people is gone from us and we are all diminished by their passing.

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim, Paul's death is a real shocker. I have met Paul, but I didn't know him well enough to make comments about him. I suggest Jerry Mueller (Miller). I think that they worked together at KNUZ. Each time one of our contemporaries passes on, it makes me realize that I am on borrowed time on this beautiful planet of ours. Give Lacy a hug for me. Chet

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. In the late 60's while I was still DJ at KNUZ, Paul was there in Sales. We, my wife Maudie and I, would go to Paul and Sally's home and play board games, especially one game called Grand Prix. We had lots of good times together there... and Paul, Dave Ward and me at Stubby's for beer and shuffleboard! Geez, I had no idea Paul had any kind of health problem. What Happened?

TRIVIA ANSWER: In August, 2008 ABBA's Gold album rises to #1 on the UK album chart for the 5th time since its release in 1992. This makes it the oldest ever UK #1 album to return to the top of the chart 16 years after release.

LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX)
Jim, I am very saddened to read of the death of my friend Darryl Beeson. Darryl and I worked together at WFAA 570 a long time ago and had kept in touch. We talked on a somewhat regular basis and he was always trying to get me to come to DFW radio lunches that happen from time to time. He left me a voice mail a few weeks ago that I neglected to answer because I was too busy. I really wish I hadn't been that busy. Lynn Woolley, The Lynn Woolley Show (

SUPER BOWL XLIV According to a new survey by The Nielsen Company most U.S. households (9 out of 10) say they will view Super Bowl XLIV on their home TV sets or at a friend's or relative's house instead of from a restaurant or sports bar. PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL
In western Pennsylvania just before dawn on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 thousands brave cold temperatures for the weather forecast by the world's most famous groundhog. Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow on Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, PA. He sees his shadow. So that means six more weeks of winter.

ICE BRINGS DOWN RADIO TOWERS Colder temperatures and icier conditions make for a rough winter in the Dakotas. This means bad news for radio station towers. In central South Dakota, the tower that carries James River Broadcasting Country KPLO FM (94.5) and KPLO-TV Reliance, SD falls to the ground after ice builds up on a guy wire. The top 300 feet of the 712-foot tower that stands for more than 50 years topples like a domino. It's a bad weather winter for radio towers in other places, too. Rick Fritsch GM of AC KBZQ FM (The Breeze) and Urban KJMZ FM (K-98 Jamz) in Lawton, OK says that southwest Oklahoma's ice storm brings down two towers with just 40-feet in between. KJMZ FM remains off the air while KBZQ FM is back on with low-power from a back-up site.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim…I’ve enjoyed some of the e-mail dialog regarding Bruce Hughes and Ted Agnew, both news stars at KLIF-1190 "back in the day". I was fortunate to work with both and become good friends with both. Bruce was brought in from Mississippi, as I recall, and was trained by literally one of the best "rock and roll news" guru’s, Brad Messer, circa ’68 or ’69. I’m saddened to hear of Bruce’s death. One of my recollections is upon my departure of KLIF (after 7 years) in the early 70’s when Bruce agreed to take my German Sheppard, Gretl, and provide a great home, as I was unable to take her to Florida when I left KLIF for Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Bruce reported to me years later that she led a long and happy life on some acreage he had in suburban Dallas. He was a terrific talent, in the day when news-casters could be informers and entertainers. Ted Agnew was also a good friend and associate. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA

TED AGNEW hires me as a newscaster on KLIF-1190 in 1972. Michael O'Shea is the Program Director. Michael brings us a new outro jingle for our newscasts that requires us news people to push the button and give our names over the music bed. He says that he will teach us news guys how to be DJs. Inform brother O'Shea that that's what I am in another life. The great Mike Selden is afternoon drive DJ. Dickie Heatherton is mid-days. One day Dickie tells me that singer Joey Heatherton is his sister. At the time she is the wife of Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Lance Rentzel. Bruce Hughes is one of the brilliant newscasters. The Mighty 1190 has good buddy deep voice John Butler as a weekend DJ. KLIF-1190 is the only place to be in radio in those Golden days. What a way to live.

MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX)
Greetings Jim! I can't believe we haven't crossed paths somewhere along-the-way in our respective radio careers. I too am a life long Dallas resident (except for a brief stint working at stations in Sherman, Corpus Christi, and Austin) early on. Reading the stories and comments about the "Mighty 1190" brought back wonderful memories of an era and time in radio now sadly lost forever. Seeing the names of my heroes Michael O'Shea, Charlie Van Dyke, Hal Martin and the like...Wow, I actually got to be around those guys in my youth! My first job at age 16 was covering weekend news from Sam Pate's "KLIF mobile news unit #6 - 1190 and out!"

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, I don't remember if Darryl Beeson was working at WFAA when you were there or not. (I forget which era of the format you were in.) Darryl eventually was a board operator for the Ed Busch show. (Maybe that was after you left.) He later was Jody Dean's producer at KRLD before joining Jim White as producer and a talent known as the "Wine Guy" on KRLD's Restaurant Show. There is a complete obit on the Dallas Morning News site. Thanks for anything you can do. Bud

DALLAS MORNING NEWS - 'Darryl Beeson, longtime Dallas wine expert and a sommelier at restaurants such as the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, French Room, and Voltaire, died on Friday (January 29, 2010) after complications following a recent car accident. He was 54. Beeson was one of the best known wine personalities in Dallas, dating back to his regular slot in the '90s on KRLD's Restaurant Show with Jim White, where he cultivated his identity as the "Wine Guy." He was also a prolific writer, covering wine and spirits for a variety of publications such as Eats & Drinks and Cocktail Atlas. He also taught International Sommelier Guild classes on wine at El Centro College and at a community college in Houston and one in Austin. He was a regular at local media events such as the lunch in June 2009 with Argentinean winemaker where his quick wit guaranteed that he was always at the ready with a clever anecdote or tidbit of information that no one else knew. His home phone number even ended in 9463, the numbers for "wine."'

JOHN HAMPTON (Houston, TX) Jim, I left DFW to follow a construction company around the country. Radio in Utah, Virginia, Oklahoma and back to Texas is so different in every market. I found Dallas, Austin, Victoria and Houston Markets so different, but I found the easy style and mix in Victoria the best for me. I live in Houston now and gave up trying to find a station I like here years ago. John

TRIVIA ANSWER: Diana Ross records 18 US #1 songs both as a solo artist plus as lead singer of The Supremes but never does win a Grammy Award.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Your mention of death in Iowa of broadcaster Greg Shanley brought back some memories. I worked with his Dad, Gib Shanley, at WPON, Pontiac, MI in early 1956; I was News Dir & Gib was Sports Dir of station. Gib & I kept in contact over the years & every visit I made to Cleveland (home of my oldest daughter) meant a visit w/my friend Gib. Sadly, he passed away last April in Cleveland. Ironically, his son Greg was not born at the time I worked with his famous sportscaster father, who would later gain much fame in his home-state of Ohio. (Hometown was Shadyside on Ohio River.) ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MORE MONEY CRUNCHES America's current financial crisis hits radio and TV operations right between the eyes with major cutbacks in news anchors, plus news departments in general because of ad revenue losses. The Telcom Act of 1996 brings about consolidation, or constipation, that just about destroys radio as we know it. The loss of tax income wipes out city budgets as well. For instance on Friday morning, January 29, 2010 news breaks out of huge cuts in city functions in Phoenix, AZ. The metropolis announces eliminations of 500 positions in the police and fire departments. In fact a total of 1,385 city jobs evaporate. The city of Phoenix also closes some library branches and senior centers. Have no fear because the Commerce Department proclaims on Friday that our nation's economy grows at an annual rate of 5.7% in the last quarter. AP calls that the fastest [growth] since the third quarter of 2003 and strong evidence that the recession is over. HA! Tell that to the millions of our friends and neighbors who lose their jobs. Political leader double-talk must come to an end muy pronto. It's time for a REAL change to arrive in our land. Do I hear an Amen?

IOWA PUBLIC BROADCASTING FIXTURE PASSES
Greg Shanley - local host of NPR Morning Edition and News Director for 20 years dies at 49 on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. In the year 2007 Greg becomes a producer and host of talk shows. His most recent achievement is as the daily host of Talk of Iowa for NPR statewide. Shanley is a 2nd-generation radio broadcaster. For 24 years his dad, Gib, is the voice of the NFL Cleveland Browns.

PLAY MISTY FOR ME Remember Clint Eastwood's role in the motion picture where a female calls in her sultry-voice and sighs Play misty for me? Clint is a night time Jazz radio DJ on KRML-1410 in the beautiful town of Carmel, CA. This female becomes a vicious viper in his life. She shows up in all of the wrong places in a mad craze. So mindful of my Houston Play Misty nightmare of a decade or so ago. Well, we must ante up our bucks because Wisdom Broadcasting has Carmel, CA's Jazz by the Sea KRML-1410 on the market to the highest bidder.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
In what country does Rock group America originally form? The answer appears below.

J.D. ADAMS (Fort Pierce-Melbourne-Port St. Lucie, FL) Hi, Lorrie and I are now Floridians. I took a job selling with a chain of small newspapers on the "Treasure Coast" of Florida (Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Melbourne). Lorrie's wanted to live in this area for years. I can understand why. Beautiful and right on the beach. Took Lorrie out to walk in the sand this weekend. You would have thought it was Christmas. 79 degrees yesterday. Spoke to friends back home trekking through a foot of snow and 22 degree temps. A little like being on Mars. Like everywhere, the economy is pretty bad. Actually, worse than most. We live in Port St. Lucie. News came out that home foreclosures here are the 9th highest in the nation. Good for us, terrible for the country. Unemployment also through the roof. Almost 20% where I work in Fort Pierce. Going door to door talking to business owners gives you a lot better picture than sitting in an office and just reading about it. The company lost three clients the first day I was here to bankruptcy. Attempts at positive thinking seem to have died. We can only hope our leaders start to get it soon. Hope all is well with you, your family and friends. I will only be using this e-mail address in the future (singingdogmarketing@gmail.com) I'll try to make some calls as soon as possible. Right now putting in 10 to 11 hours a day to get it figured out. Exciting to be learning a new field. Take care...JD

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Michael O'Shea is correct about Ken Dowe. I too worked in the Mighty 1190 news dept with Brad, Dick, Ron, Sam, Ben, but Charlie Van Dyke was truly the Golden Boy of KLIF, along with Jimmy Rabbit and Steve Lundy. But Michael knows what he's saying, even today, I am in touch with Ken Dowe on a daily basis via E-mail. What a talent and right on thinker. It's too bad we don't have more "media types" like him, someone who really knows programming and promotion. He is a "living" Gordon McClendon. To quote Michael: "Our Radio world has changed and it'll never be like that again." I am thankful that I was able to work in the "business" during its golden era, when it was really exciting and fun and I was able to know people like McLendon, Stewart and Dowe. Not many radio people had that opportunity. Frank Haley-Albuquerque, KDNT, KCPA, KGAF, KEEE, KDOK, KTBB, KVIL, KLIF, KILT, KTRH, KOB, KFLQ, KKIM. (still on the "air" at 70 years old)

CHERI FALCHETTI (Pittsburgh-Kittanning, PA) Good Morning Jim! We, hubby & I, live in his hometown, Kittanning, PA. A wee town full of history of its own. The radio station I favor is 107.9 they call it Y108 here. There's Froggy 93 as well, but I like the DJs off of Y108 better, one certain DJ from "the south" (which is WV) yakked with me for the entire trip to Wheeling one year, just to make sure I got there! When I was heading to a show to see Trace Adkins. I think he missed the 'twang/accent'. -ha-ha- yes I still have mine. thanks again, Cheri

JOHN HAMPTON (Houston, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio January 25, 2008 [Monday] Issue #767. Jim, I grew up in DFW and listened to KZEW. there was a really sweet week-end DJ that always played my requests. I lost track of this girl and her name popped up a few times on your news. If your friend Joanie Green is the same girl I knew back then. It is nice to know that she is well and seems happy. I miss her sultry voice and personal style. I feel like radio is so lost its way, with crude and vulgar people trying to amuse. I now own an iPod and can listen to Arlo's motorcycle song and Long John Bawldry's King of Boogie Woogie and don't have to deal with rude DJs that don't want to hear from "old dudes" and b-s Music.

ROD RODRIGUEZ (Dallas-Plano, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio January 20, 2008 [Friday] Issue #767. Hi Jim. I was sorry to hear about the passing of Dan Rosen's mother. She sounds like quite a remarkable lady. Although I never met her, I remember hearing somewhere that she might have even been a Radio City Rockette at one point. Please pass along my condolences. I worked along side Danny in the mid 70's when we were both at KKYX out on Bandera Road. We both worked in the news department under Joe Simpson. Joe was quite a guy and I learned a great deal from him. But there must have been something in the water out there because by the late 70's both Danny and I left broadcasting and went on to law school. I understand that Danny is now a law professor in Japan while I'm involved as a federal banking regulator. And to think we started our pre-law careers out at the old KKYX ranch. Thanks for allowing me to share these fond memories. Rod Rodriguez, Plano, Texas
TRIVIA ANSWER: The 3 members of Rock group America are all from the U.S. but they actually meet and form their group while they live in the U.K.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) I believe it was Bud (Buschardt). I saw it when Jim Rose came up on Sam Pate on Google. You are wrong there Jimbo. I keep in touch by JRRR but I will always remember you from those days past on Radio. Even though you may not remember me, I sure remember you.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim, We all recall the Charlie Van Dyke’s, Rod Roddy’s, Deano Day’s and Jimmy Rabbits of KLIF jock fame. But we also should recognize the amazing news voice that station (KLIF-1190) had, led by Brad Messer, Richard Mock, Ron McAlister, Ted Agnew, Bruce Hughes, Scott Hodges, Michael Hiatt, Bob Richmond et al. I know Bill Stewart gets credit for early development of KLIF…but in my opinion the overall architect of this amazing station, during this amazing time, is singularly my mentor Ken Dowe…who remains today one of the great thinkers and minds of mass communication. Just look what KD did in getting and keeping KKDA at the top for another few decades, largely un-recognized. Our Radio world has changed…and it’ll never be like that again. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, I loved working at KLIF (1190). The people at KLIF did some very nice things for me. I got the London Flu and was so sick but couldn't go into the hospital because I had 3 children. Scott (Hodges) lived in my part of town and I shared a ride to and from work. Scott is the one recognized I had pneumonia and drove me straight to the doctor. The women at KLIF came by to see I had groceries when I couldn't get out of bed. Eventually I had to go into the hospital. At my worst, there was a hippie looking guy who worked at the hospital who would be sitting in a chair inside the door each morning. He would ask how I was doing and then leave. Turned out he was a friend of Mike Selden's and Selden had asked him to check on me. He actually came by to see me once after I got out of the hospital and asked if there was anything he could do for me. My room was filled with huge roses and things all the time. One of the announcers had mentioned I was in the hospital...KLIF fans sent most of the flowers. I think that is when I realized it was sort of a big deal to work at KLIF. The music people, of course, sent me things because they wanted me to influence Jim Taber and Michael about what to play on the air. And, they gave me lots of albums...if I said I liked something, I got it. The young engineer, Rick Neace, told me to get a cassette player. Rick ordered it getting a discount, brought it and set it up for me on the floor!!! Nice man, and he had befriended Michael O'Shea. They are friends to this day...he was in some of the pictures with Michael that he sent me from the Induction Ceremony (TRHOF).

BOB CROWLEY
(D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim, I have come into possession of a copy of 'A Gathering of Promises'; the Bubble Puppy album. It has their hit, Hot Smoke and Sasafrass. Remember that one? It was a monster hit in Texas in 1968, but because they wouldn't pay the 'duquie' for the east and west coast programmers, it never got played there. Now you never hear it on the radio. It's a shame, too, 'cause the song just JUMPS out of the speakers. you'd think the local programmers would know about it, but I guess their lists come from elsewhere. Plus, anyone in high school when it came out is over 54 now, so they no longer count to the advertisers. Colostomy Low See Ento, Pour Poe-see-toe. Hope all is well for you and the pooch. We're holding on. I'm working on a Red Cross training seminar next month. That, and the income tax refund will keep us afloat through the spring...beyond there be dragons. Bob Crowley

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Subject: hey there! I noticed in reading your back columns, Sam had some wrong information on his death. The date was right, but age and where he passed was misquoted. He was 76 and died at his home in McKinney with his family by his bedside. The report said he died of brain cancer. This was not correct but he did have a tumor growing fast on his brain. About a week before he died, his daughter said he told her with a long look as he talked, " I wonder if anyone will remember me when I am gone." I looked his name up on Google and If he could see it he would know how he has been remembered. The reason I wanted to correct his age, is because I am younger and adding a year would also boost me up one.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1960, a CPA from Oak Park, IL by the name of Bob Newhart records his The Button-down Mind stand-up comedy record album 50 years ago this February 2010. In 1961, it rises to #1 on Billboard's Pop chart. In 2007, NPR claims that it changes the direction of American humor.

CHARLES GEORGE Subject: The Good life Is the Nightlife. Hi, I was thinking of when Jack Paar had a film of a spaghetti tree on his show. I also saw his farewell from his show, though only as a rerun on the History Channel. I have been practicing my Spanish by listening to Radio Exterior Spain throughout the day on 17850 and 17595. I have a cassette recorder that I connect to my shortwave radio. Since my Spanish is very poor however I understand when I hear Arriba Arriba, Goal...! Also I hear clearly Radio Amazonia Brazil on 11780 throughout the afternoon. I enjoy the Brazilian Music. Charles George

ALAN SHAPIRO (Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village, CA) Subject: Lunch...no I'm not in Wales. Hi Everyone, I guess most of you received the stupid hoax email yesterday. What a freaking horror, stole my password from yahoo and then used it on Facebook and IM. On top of that after they stole my contact list they proceeded to erase it so I couldn't contact anyone to let them know it was a scam...what a wasted day. Anyway, ashapiro70@gmail.com is my new email address so please change it in your systems. Thanks and yes, our lunch is on for next Wednesday at La Finestra, 12:30 PM. MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Hi Jim…Your trivia question regarding Paul and Paula…and Major Bill Smith’s Le Cam records, brought back an almost forgotten memory from my KLIF days in the late sixties. That memory was "Major Bill" visiting the regular KLIF Monday music meetings with some of Big D’s famous and infamous record promo guys, like Merlin Littlefield, Ernie Phillips, Ed Spacek and others. We loved and adored "Major Bill" and always got a kick out of his "re-mixing and re-packaging" Paul and Paula every six months or so. I recall one week it was with more strings and violins to give it a richer sound. Once he had re-mixed for a more country sound. While I wasn’t there in the 70’s I’ll bet he did a disco-mix once with Paul and Paula <smile>. Major Bill was as big as Texas…and was so much fun to chat with. Thanks for bringing back that wonderful memory. Glad to hear you have a new four-legged "partner". Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, Bellingham, Washington

MAJOR BILL SMITH First time that I ever hear of Major Bill Smith is when I'm the 7pm-midnight DJ on clear channel 50,000 watt WFAA-820 in Dallas, TX from 1967-68 with listeners in 38 states. On a clear night just never know from where the next phone calls come. One evening I receive a small package from a guy by the name of Major Bill Smith in Ft. Worth. Inside the mailer is a 45 rpm record (remember those?) from a new yet unknown recording artist. We chat a couple of times on the telephone. Next time that I hear from Major Bill Smith is in 1975 when I'm Music Director and DJ on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth. This is on regular Tuesday morning visits from local, regional and national record company promo guys and one lone female. Every so often Major Bill Smith is amongst the many who sit in the reception area to promote their latest records for airplay on KXOL. Every single time that Major Bill enters my office he uses the same familiar phrase, I've got a cotton-picking smash hit. The Major usually dresses in odd clothes but he always is the most friendly person in Cowtown. The other record promo folks attire themselves in the latest hip clothing and privately poke fun at the Major. This irritates me because he is the only one in the entire group who ever produces and promotes real hit records even though it's quite awhile since his last smash hit. So, I give Major Bill Smith all of the time and due respect that he deserves as a living legend in the music industry, plus he really is a nice fella. Miss those golden all day Tuesday chat sessions with top record promoters from all across our land. Have a few stories about a couple others of those characters, too. In fact, I just plain miss radio the way it used to be before the bankers consolidate half dozens of radio stations up and down the hallways thanks to the Bill Clinton Telcom law of 1996. That's the same year that I get out of radio because things begin to fall to pieces at KILT FM. Love radio but there's just too much monkey business going on for me to be involved in.

(Austin-Kyle, TX) I have found the cure to the Clear Channel blues. No more mega-station with the same programming junk. No more money changers at the Temple stealing the community blind with endless commercials and talk non-stop about themselves. No, I have cured that for me. It was an expensive (for me) investment. But I now own my own radio station. I broadcast what I think is good music and if someone else doesn't like that music, I don't care. This invention? Something called an "iPod". STERN RETURNS TO TERRESTRIAL RADIO? Howard Stern has just eleven months left on his Sirius XM Sputnik Radio contract. The question of the day is how much less pay can Sirius get away with to still keep Stern in its lunar orbit? If SXM Radio cuts his salary Howard threatens to leave their spy-in-the-sky asteroid. SXM Radio awards him $100 million-a-year to say and do as he pleases without Uncle Charlie Charlie's (FCC) whip lash. But will the Telstar radio company ante up that much space cash again to keep him on their hot airwaves? Some say that SXM will step up to the plate and pay Stern another $100 million to keep him aboard their rocket ship. But, John Hogan, Clear Channel Radio President/CEO, tells Bloomberg Business Week that he might ask Howard to sign with CCR after his SXM piece of paper runs its course: We would be the most logical company for him to optimize his exposure and financial return. Does Howard Stern continue his beam above the planet earth? This just in! Inside Radio's Monday, January 25, 2010 issue reports that Sirius XM personality Howard Stern tells listeners to his satellite radio show I’m not contemplating it. I don’t want to be censored. JRRR firmly believes that Howard remains at Sirius XM at even more than his current $500M salary.

LOVELY RITA COSTS $500K
During his final week as host of NBC TV's The Tonight Show Conan O'Brien seeks revenge for his demotion. On his last night as host he has the house band, The Roots, play the Beatles tune Lovely Rita as actor Tom Hanks walks on stage. This is to honor Tom's wife, Rita Wilson. But it costs NBC TV a half million bucks. Questlove, drummer for The Roots, sighs Any time you use the Beatles on TV that will cost you dearly. On Wednesday night, Conan causes NBC TV to further splurge when he rolls out in a $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron wearing mouse ears as The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction plays in the background. Another pricey song. O'Brien scoops up lots cash for himself and his staff, too, with a severance package that totals about $45 million. On Monday night March 1, 2010 Jay Leno returns to his original post as host of The Tonight Show.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim, Radio in the 60’s and 70’s…even into the 80’s was scrappy, seat-of-the-pants, "let’s do some promos, play some hits and kick some ass" radio…owned by local entrepreneurs and one-off media creators. While I cringe in pain seeing creative morning talent "dropping like flies" with corporate consolidators trying to avoid bankruptcy and PPM’s flavor-on-the-month…I’m am so thankful that I was able to ride that bucking bronco for 40-plus years and participate in the golden era of radio creativity. And associate with some amazing co-conspirators along the way. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA

PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#769) January 25, 2010 [Monday] Hi Jim, In regard to the note from Cheri Falcetti in Pittsburg, Stubby’s Lounge was the favorite "hangout" for ALL the KNUZ DJs in the 60’s including me. It was only 2 blocks from the radio station. We also took a lot of entertainers that were in town for a show to Stubby’s. It was a great place to shoot pool, have a cold brew and relax before and after our DJ shifts. Among the DJs and newsmen that hung out almost every day or night were: Arch, Berlin, Dave Ward, Chuck "Baby" Adams, Jerry Miller, Fred Jones, Dick Jones, Jerry Rice, Brad Messer, Joe Ford (maybe?) and of course, me. Others I remember were B.J. Thomas, Roy Head and a lot of local artists who were trying to make it to the big time. I remember country music on the juke box and shooting pool in the back room. Arch has a trucking company in Alvin, Texas and is still married and in love with his great wife Jan. I hope this helps Cheri. I do remember her mother, Lena. RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hey Jim: Well I was not an avid listener of Air America or any type of Talks show for that matter. I still feel both sides (especially in an election year) should be heard evenly regardless of one's political beliefs. That's how democracy works. The recent US Supreme court decision was stupid. An individual votes not Corporations or Unions or those lousy Political action committees. Now the candidates in any campaign are going to get lost in getting their own messages out due to the quagmire of the big buck groups. We are the only government in the world where the representatives are continuously campaigning and not doing the job they originally were elected to do. All my Best. Ray Whitworth

AIR AMERICA LOSES ITS LIFELINE Conservatives who live in our home towns rejoice at the sound of the latest words from Charlie Kireker, CEO of Liberal radio network Air America Media. Good time Charlie has the blues when he makes the following announcement, or should we say pronouncement? It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business. So, on Monday, January 25, 2010 Air America Media disconnects its rope. But let's hold our horses for just a minute; this is the second time that liberal Air America goes bankrupt. Remember way back in 2006 when Green Family Media purchases Air America for $4.25 million? Is it really over?

SCOTUS OPENS UP THE PORTALS
In its most recent decision, the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down prohibitions on corporations, and probably unions, on their monetary flow in support of or against political candidates. In times like these both radio and TV stations find themselves in intense cash flow predicaments. Does this new government proclamation present political ad surges into broadcast operations? What we may see is an open spigot of counteractive political ads on radio and TV that may rival World Wide Wrestling matches. Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

CONAN O'BRIAN IS FREE AT LAST What a way to go. Conan O'Brian is very upset that NBC moves him off the Tonight Show after only seven months and banishes him back to his former spot as host of the Late Show. The NBC boardroom's brilliant idea to remove Jay Leno from his highly successful run as Johnny Carson's replacement on the Tonight Show and put him in Prime Time hits the fan. Jay bombs in Prime Time. This causes local TV stations all across America to have huge ratings losses on their 10 pm CST news programs. They protest but NBC airheads only threaten them with the loss of their network affiliations. It now costs NBC TV over $40 million to ditch Conan and bring Jay Leno back to his rightful place as host of the Tonight Show. But NBC TV's mistake has grave consequences from which the network may never recover. They may find that it's more difficult to bring back those viewers who go elsewhere than to hold on to them in the first place.

How tall is former NBC TV Tonight Show host Conan O'Brian? The answer appears below.

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: Andy Furman's Returning To Radio! I sent you a link to the story earlier this week, and will send you the story tomorrow or Sunday, or whenever it's written. But Andy is one of my Facebook friends and has confirmed to me that he will have a Cincinnati based sports talk show on "Real Talk" WQRT-1160 beginning Monday, February 8, from 5-7Pm weekdays. Andy has been out of radio for over two years. For 18 years he was the main Sports Talk Host on WLW-700, but was fired without cause in October 2006, three weeks after being suspended for calling former Bengals receiver a "racist" on his show for skipping a scheduled radio interview between the two of them. That's when I first began reading your Jim Rose Remembers Radio Newsletter, because you quoted Andy saying his "radio career is over". That's when I emailed you to tell you he had found a Sports Talk job on Supertalk WFTK FM. He did that job for about a year when that station changed its format to Rock Music. Hopefully this new job will last longer for him, because the station already has an all talk format, all national shows, until Andy begins February 8. And it's an advantage being an AM signal, as I think it's much stronger than FM. For an hour 6-7PM he'll be in direct competition, with his former Employer WLW's Sports Talk which runs weeknights from 6-9pm, unless there's a sports game the station plays instead. Lance McAlister is the current main WLW Sports Talk host. Mary Lynn Knochelman; Cincinnati, Ohio

JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Dan McCurdy's post. Jim, I saw Dan McCurdy's post about the Great Pyrenees he found. They are, without a doubt, true "gentle giants". Our Pyr, Beau, has been with us for 11 years. He's a rescue dog, weighs in at 152 pounds, beautiful solid white, very loving and sweet. That's their nature. People are always shocked when they meet Beau and find out that we keep him in the house. Their response is amazement that a dog that big could live in the home! We wouldn't have it any other way. It gets a bit crowded when he decides he wants to sleep with us, but we adjust. We like to say: This is Beau's house. He just lets us live in it! The bad news about the Pyrenees, and most of the big breeds, is the fact that their life expectancy is around 10 years, so we treasure every single day we have with this big lug. He owns our hearts and we currently try to make him as comfortable as possible. Enjoy your "huge girl", Dan, and Jim...give Lacy a pat on the head from Beau.

FOLK MUSIC LOSES MATRIARCH The mother of vocalists Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, dies at 63 in Montreal on Monday, January 18, 2010. She struggles with cancer since 2006. CBC News reports that Rufus Wainwright cancels his tour of Australia and New Zealand to be with his mom. Kate is born in St. Sauveur-de-Monts, Quebec on February 6, 1946. During the early 1960s in Montreal Kate sings with her older sister Anna in folk group the Mountain City Four. In 1966, as a duo, the sisters furnish music for the Oscar-nominated documentry Helicopter Canada. In the 1970s Kate and her sister gain attention as the McGarrigle Sisters with their intimate folk-style harmony. For awhile, Kate goes solo in New York folk clubs. She marries singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III (Dead Skunk #16-1973). In 1974, the McGarrigle Sisters reunite. That's about the time when Linda Ronstadt records her tune Heart Like a Wheel. In 1976, the duo signs a contract with Warner Brothers Records. Joe Boyd produces their debut album. The McGarrigles record nine more albums for Kebec Disc (they perform in French), Polydor, Private Music and Joe Boyd's label Hannibal. Their last release is a Christmas album in 2005. In 1993 the McGarrigle Sisters receive the Order of Canada for their contributions to the nation's music.

FIDDLER SUFFERS STROKE
Probably one of the best known fiddle players that we know of, Charlie Daniels, has a mild stroke while he goes snowmobiling with his wife and friends in Colorado. We remember Charlie's big 1979 hit The Devil Went Down to Georgia. The 73 year-old Daniels suffers the stroke on Friday, January 15, 2010. He enters a hospital in Durango, which is about 230 miles southwest of Denver. Technicians airlift him to a Denver hospital. Doctors release him on Sunday. Here's another article from the Chicago Sun-Times: www.suntimes.com/news/obituaries/1996678,CST-NWS-xrosen18.article BTW, when Mom sang on KRLD, I think the studios were in the Adolphus Hotel. KTSA was in the Smith-Young Tower, I believe. That building is now known as the Tower Life Building and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Glad you remember meeting her. Best, Dan

Jim: Just noted death of a San Antonio singer you may remember: Jayne Walton Rosen, singer with Lawrence Welk; born 8/28/17 in SAT & died there 1/10/2010. BOB

ROD RODRIGUEZ (Dallas-Plano, TX) Hi Jim.

RICK HEROLD (DFW-Grand Prairie, TX) Subject: Bruce Hughes. Just love your newsletter. I had written you a couple of years ago looking for my old boss and friend Bruce Hughes. I worked for a short while at KLIF when Fairchild owned it, and then went to KNUS. I had the privilege to work for Bruce prior to a format change. I have tried many people, some think Bruce has died. Others, aren't sure. I thought he went home to Mississippi at one time. Any help would be grandly appreciated! Rick Herold; Director of Parks and Recreation; City of Grand Prairie, TX (

BRUCE HUGHES
Sad to say that Bruce dies a few years ago. We mention that some time ago in a back issue of JRRR. In 1972 after I leave the news department at KBOX-1480 in Dallas, TX Ted Agnew hires me at KLIF-1190 as a newscaster. This is after Fairchild buys KLIF from McLendon. KLIF-1190 is a fabulous radio station with extremely high ratings. At that time Bruce Hughes is a KLIF-1190 newscaster. What a great news delivery voice and style he has. John Rhodes leaves KTSA-550 in San Antonio, TX to be news director of KITE-930. He makes me an offer that I cannot refuse to be PM Drive newscaster. So I leave KLIF for KITE. That move has to be one of the worst decisions that I ever make. At some time after that I'm on an airplane flight from San Antonio to Dallas. Of all things I see Ted Agnew in a seat. Ted says that he tries to find me to come back to KLIF but he cannot locate me. Another bad decision for not keeping in touch with Agnew. Absolutely hate it when radio stations change their call letters. Radio history flies away into the clouds like a lost balloon. From 1967-68 I'm the 7pm-midnight DJ on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 M-F and Sunday noon-6pm DJ on WFAA-570. In 1972, a newscaster on KLIF-1190. WFAA sells their 50% mutual ownership of the 820 frequency to WBAP. So, it becomes WBAP-820 and WFAA-570. Later, KLIF flips its call letters. WFAA grabs the KLIF call signs to become KLIF-570. Never will be able to accept those call letter flips because I grow up in Dallas listening to KLIF-1190 and WFAA-820.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim...my daughter 'rescued' a beautiful, solid white Great Pyrenees during the recent ice and snow...she was stranded in the middle of a busy highway here in Sherman...was undernourished and had no ID on her collar. She is a HUGE dog, but so sweet and loving...not as large as a St. Bernard, but pretty darn close. Beautiful white tail curves over her back, in somewhat the same manner as Lacy. I'll tell ya, for the first time in a looong time, I am really smitten with a dog...Hoo Boy...the kids call her 'Big White Dawg' but I'll give her a more appropriate 'Jack London' type of name...'White Fang' is too obvious, so an Alpine/Pyrenees sorta name should work...maybe 'Mon Cher' or 'Heidi' or 'Blanca'...we'll get it figgered out... ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SWAMP POP PRINCE PASSES Bobby Charles is born Robert Charles Guidry in Abbeville, LA on February 21, 1938. During his childhood he listens to Cajun music, also Hank Williams. At 15, Bobby hears Fats Domino. He says that changes my life forever. Charles pioneers South Louisiana's Swamp Pop music. Bobby writes some of the most important tunes of Rock history. In 1955, he releases Later Alligator on Chess records which lands at #14 on the R&B chart. In 1956, Bill Haley's version of the song See You Later Alligator zooms to #6 on Billboard's Pop chart. There are other evergreens like Fats Domino's Walking To New Orleans [#6-1960] and Clarence [Frogman] Henry's (I Don't Know Why I Love You) But I Do [#4-1961]. That song also finds its way onto the soundtrack of the 1994 Tom Hanks movie Forrest Gump. The soundtrack of the 1998 Drew Barrymore movie Home Fries contains his melody Why Are People Like That? Because of his South Louisiana R&B vocal style, many refer to Charles as black, but he is white. On November 26, 1976, The Band invites him to perform in their farewell concert, The Last Waltz. Along with Dr. John and The Band he does Down South in New Orleans. Virtually everyone in the Louisiana music scene holds Bobby Charles in high esteem. At New Orleans' 2007 Jazz Fest, Bobby's band includes Sonny Landreth and Mac [Dr. John] Rebennack. In September 2007, Charles inducts into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He suffers from cancer. On Thursday, January 14, 2010 Bobby Charles collapses and dies at 71 in his home near Abbeville.

Radio listeners in Dallas, TX since the Fabulous Fifties are familiar with the voice of air personality Ron Chapman. Ron's long radio career begins at WHAV-1490 (now WCEC) Haverhill, MA in 1953. In the mid 1950s we hear him in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on the highly successful Charlie & Harrigan Show on KLIF-1190 for 6 years. During the late 1960s Ron hosts an American Bandstand type show on ABC WFAA-TV CH8. In 1968, he joins a group that buys KVIL FM where he remains for 32 years as PD and morning personality. In the late 1990's Ron joins Oldies KLUV FM until he retires in 2005. A few after that, ABC asks him to become the regular substitute for Paul Harvey News. In October 2004 Chapman and his wife join us at our table during the Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremonies as Ron becomes an on stage inductee. DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: News. Dear Jim, This story goes back beyond your usual time frame, but my Mom died on Sunday the 10th. She performed under the name Jayne Walton both on her own and as the Champagne Lady with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in the 1940s. She later appeared as a guest on his television program several times. Here's the radio connection: she sang on many of the nation's radio stations over the years and got her start on stations such as KTSA in San Antonio and KRLD in Dallas. For a while, she had a nationwide show out of WOW in Omaha I believe, sponsored by the Red Ball Express moving company. Later on, she was based in Chicago and spent a great deal of time on the air there. At that time (late 30s through early 50s), many radio stations had staff bands. Mom said she always enjoyed the radio work. It was nice and clean, compared to trekking across the country to perform in a different city night after night. You can read a story about her here: www.mysanantonio.com/news/Rosen_was_Champagne_Lady_for_Lawrence_Welk.html Best, Dan

KBAT-680 When I'm a DJ on KBAT in San Antonio, TX from 1970-71, high school teenager Danny Rosen is an intern in the news department. We discuss a lot of radio and become good friends. One fine day I meet Dan's mom. She is a very nice person. But he never alludes to the fact that his mom once is on the radio, too, plus that she is a former Lawrence Welk Champagne Lady. Guess that sho biz blood runs deep in the Rosen family.

RICK HEROLD (D/FW-Grand Prairie, TX)
Jim, I was just a kid, who grow up idolizing everyone at KLIF and then KNUS! They were my heroes. I was very lucky to get to work at these stations. Right before McLendon sold the station (KLIF) they cut back and many of us were let go. Bruce (Hughes) stayed on however. I continued my college education and have been in Parks and Recreation for the past 26 years. However, my favorite stories and memories are my days that I got to work at "The Mighty 1190" and work for The Old Scotchman, Gordon McLendon at KNUS! Wow, what fun!!! Thanks Jim for all your GRAND work! I will miss Bruce Hughes always...Rick (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: KBOX/KPCN -- Oh, yeah...KPCN was a daytimer, and as I recall, the only C&W outlet in the Metro Mess...probably the reason Irene Runnels and Balaban decided to fill the niche in the format vacuum. Like you said, KBOX being a 24-hour outlet, it must have been a shocker to KPCN. A listener's perspective would be: after listening to C&W on KBOX at night, there would be no real imperative or incentive to change from 1480 back to 730...except, of course, to hear the Jim Rose Show from noon to 3P <g>. Sooo. I got outta the grip of KBOX and the C&W stupor that it was in 1967, and left in January 1967 when 1480 made the switch. Matter of fact, I was the final voice heard on Top 40 KBOX when I introduced Donovan's 'Mellow Yellow' right before twang-time started at noon that final/first day. My final words were, "Weird song...weird fellow." A KBOX fan/radio historian, Gary McBrayer, NYC, passed that little tidbit on to me years ago. I had flat-out forgotten about the time/song. I remembered the year, 1967 and month, January, since my 'hire date' at The Southland Corporation (7-Eleven Stores' ad agency 'The Stanford Agency') was January 23, 1967. My best to you and Miss Lacy...Dan McCurdy

TRIVIA ANSWER: Smokey Robinson's wife Claudette is his inspiration to write My Girl but his personal problems lead to their divorce in 1986.

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Well my young friend I am doing some voice work for a congressional candidate and getting my certification to teach reading, social studies and special education. George (Lester) was funny, friendly. When I make a run for the White House I’ll hire you and Lacy as the next FCC chairman. Ray

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Like the nursery rhyme that goes for won't of a horse shoe nail. I have since learned other versions of Mother Goose. My mother and I went to IHop for Thanksgiving. We were going to go to the Luby's on Mockingbird but it was too crowded. I found out that the Luby's that was near my apartment is now closed. I also feel sad when I go downtown and find places boarded up. I use to enjoy Beks with their hickory sauce. I am not sure whether they even exist, sort of like Youngblood’s. I always liked ABC Contemporary when they would come on with the tune Let's Get Together. When there was a station by the Dallas Country Club.

WILL ROGERS (November 4, 1879-August 15, 1935) Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.
