MAJOR TV ANCHOR LEAVES HIS POST
Rumors have it that one of Fox News Channel's dominent political editors steps down from his nightly newscast after the presidential election. Two folks close to him say that the 65 year old Brit Hume has an interest in reducing his role but remains with Fox News as a panelist on Fox News Sunday. Brit a former ABC White House correspondent never hides his Conservative views. He is an integral part of Fox News' success. Brit anchors on election nights, at political conventions and moderates a number of presidential debates.

TV ANCHORS AND REPORTERS TAKE NOTICE
The CBS TV newsroom wakes up to a new world. In April 2008 CBS News hands out a pink piece of paper to veteran Meteorologist Paul Douglas at WCCO TV as part of a layoff of 100 staff members across the station group. Paul is one of the most popular TV personalities at the top-rated Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN TV station with 22 years in the market and the last 11 at WCCO. Douglas says The model is changing and the era of the high-priced anchor persons is slowly, maybe not slowly, is rapidly coming to an end. Even if you're No. 1 ... if half as many eyeballs are watching your newscast as were watching five years ago, that's a problem. News agents who represent TV anchors and reporters find unusually tough times for news talent. They say it takes longer to place clients in news jobs and salaries are not as generous. Experienced and accomplished TV reporters find for the first time in their careers that they are now expendable.

DAVID A. DOERR (Biloxi, MS) Hey Gang! I made it back to Biloxi, MS about an hour ago. Thought I'd send this picture out right away. I am so very glad I went to the Memorial Service although I wasn't sure why I felt like I should be there...I had never even met Nick although I had listened to him on KEXL. But after meeting so many of his friends and family members, and reading half-way through Nick's facinating book which his son gave me, I absolutely know I was supposed to be there. Thanks to all of you who were there! David A. Doerr Note on Picture: Left to Right: Don White, Sam Kindrick, Ron Houston, David Doerr, Jay Pennington, Bobby Reyes. PS - Just out of camera range was Bruce Hathaway and Tom Devine
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Talked to Mom today. She said her friend, Father Joe, was in touch with Dan Cook in the months leading up to his passing. Apparently they communicated by phone and e-mail, but didn't meet. Then, Dan's family called and asked him to come. Dan had been in a coma for quite a while, but woke up when Father Joe came. They gave him some ice cream; the first food he had eaten in days. Father Joe gave him the last rights. Dan's daughter put a rosary in Dan's hands, and he was gone. Seems Dan Cook was raised Catholic, but like many of us, fell away from the faith. But in the last days, he was able to re-connect with his faith heritage. His family had the traditional rosary and catholic funeral. Mom was very pleased by Father Joe's story. She recalled how good Dan Cook was to me, and to everyone else he ever encountered. She was happy he was given the final sacraments and a Catholic burial. Bob
ARTHUR J. Bud ROGERS (Springfield-Joplin, MO) I don't remember a Wade Cutler. Richard Poyner had a brother there was an instructor in the First Class license classes. I don't recall his name at the moment. I still have the Catalog that gave information about the school. I didn't take the 'first class' course. I should have, but couldn't afford it at the time. My Dad had died a couple of years before and money was tight. (Still is, LOL.). I remember walking from the radio station downtown back to Mrs. Ethel Moon's house (4 miles) after I signed off at 11:00 at night. I was in Dallas in the mid 80's was a little apprehensive walking around downtown in broad daylight (LOL). I can't believe I did that and didn't think a thing about it. I walked down to work in the afternoon and worked until sign of. It was KEIR by the say at 103.9 I believe. I had the call letters on my car back window glass. Couldn't afford to drive it anywhere...except it was available to take me back home when I finished the course. Thanks for this exchange. And, Yes, Frank Haley was working at KLIF. I happened to have a newscast recorded that he did. It was on a reel-to-reel tape that I recorded off the speaker at Mrs. Moon's house. I was able to copy it and send him a copy about 3 or 4 months ago.
FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Jim, Sorry to hear about Dr. Charlie Payne, I never met him, but he and I communicated by e-mail after his wife died. I sent him condolances after that and he replied. He was kind enough to send me a copy of his book autographed to me. It's a great read, I'm sure you've read it. His death is a great loss to everyone, his family, friends, and the business. Take care my friend, Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."
TRIVIA ANSWER: Jimi Hendrix's guitar version of The Star-Spangled Banner dominates a 1996 Aiwa TV ad.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I enjoy the work of Don Wolff. He had a show of Jazz on Saturday Nights, since it would get bumped for Sports I would forget about his show. I tuned in not hearing him I thought the worse had happened. Anyway, I went to Google and found he is now on KFUO-FM on Friday Nights. They stream their station so I will be able to hear his show. I find there is good radio out there it just is harder for me to find. Before I actually heard Dizzy , I had an Lp by Cal Tjader, Soul Burst that had a composition Manteca. I listened until I could learn to play the song on my guitar. It was simple that it was hard to learn. I find some simple tunes are harder for me to play. For a year I worked at Piccadilly Cafeteria on Commerce, next door was the Melody Shop and the Commerce News Stand, so most of my money would get spent at those two places along with sheet music from Whittles and McCords. 73, Charles George

REO FLOOD RELIEF
Recent floods in Iowa leave its citizens in quite a quandry. But they pull together to help each other out of the flood water surge that destroys their homes, transportation and personal momentos. Where are the outcries for help from the very vocal social radicals, movie stars and recording artists who scream and yell about hurricane Katrina's aftermath? Well legendary Rock group REO Speedwagon rises to the occasion like true American heroes. On Wednesday, July 16, 2008 REO Speedwagon holds a Ridin' the Storm Out – Floods of 2008 Relief Concert at Prairie Meadows in Polk Country, IA. And if that's not enough, 100% of the money from the event goes straight to the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation to help victims in Polk County. We remember REO Speedwagon Classics: Keep On Loving You (#1-1980), Take It On The Run (#5-1981), Keep the Fire Burnin' (#7-1982) and Can't Fight This Feeling (#1-1985). REO's album Hi Infidelity ranks as one of the best-selling LPs of all-time with sales of more than 10 million copies in the USA alone. REO's most recent album Find Your Own Way Home is their first studio album in 11 years. While we're at it let's cast our votes for REO Speedwagon in the ESPN Battle of the Bands. The winning band has their version ofTake Me Out To The Ballgame as the 100th unofficial anthem of baseball. JRRR salutes REO Speedwagon!

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth, TX) Jim, I was very sorry to hear the news of the passing of Charlie Payne. Charlie and I had over the last few years a number of email exchanges and I was invited to his house in North Dallas to check out some of his radio momentos and I left with part of his vast collection of LP's that he just gave me. I was supposed to go back for a follow up visit but he and I could not make schedules work. He was truly a great guy and a blast to talk to in person. I also have an autographed copy of his book. Take care and we'll talk soon, Bob Tomlinson

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) For me as well, Jim. Actually his sister emailed me yesterday but didn't give me any details except he had been dealing with cancer and wasn't doing well for the last 3 weeks - and died yesterday morning. I believe Aubrey was living in San Antonio. Jay
BRIAN RODAHAVER (Stevensville, MD) Hi Jim! Do you really know the real age difference between Don Knotts and Francey Yarborough? Inquiring minds would like to know, not just for personal knowledge but for a piece I'm writing. It's very tasteful and respectable. Thanks! BRIAN RODAHAVER
DON KNOTTS dies on February 24, 2006 at 81 at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Don's wife of three years 38 year old stage actress Francey Yarborough is at his side. That's a 43 year age difference. Yes, Don Knotts is a ladies man. Don lies in a $36,000 plot near actress Eva Gabor in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA. Next to Dallas Cowboys NFL football, the Andy Griffith TV show is always my favorite. Without Don Knotts it's just a real good show but with Don as Barney Fife it becomes extraordinarily magnificent. Beyond reproach. Have seen all of the A-G shows over and over for decades and love them more each time. God bless Don Knotts!

ANOTHER TEXAS RADIO LEGEND PASSES INTO THE NIGHT
A man who has one of the most successful careers in radio dies at his home in Dallas, TX on Thursday, July 10, 2008. Dr. Charles F. Payne and I have many email conversations over the years about his long and highly successful radio career that begins about 40 miles southeast of Big D on KAND-1340 in the central Texas town of Corsicana. Charlie tells me the call letters KAND come from can that contains Wolf Brand chili. He says that he plays all kinds of music on KAND including Country. He remembers a very interesting story about when Country great Ernest Tubb visits KAND for a live singing performance. Charlie quickly moves up the radio ladder to KIXL-1040 in Dallas, TX where he perfects the Beautiful Music format. Another radio legend Gordon Mclendon sees his great talent and appoints him to the General Manager post of one of the greatest radio stations ever that is at its peak - KLIF-1190 in Dallas. Charlie and his beloved wife Katy head to NYC to start the first all news radio on WINS-1010. Many famous call letters come to mind where Charles shines his light. Dr. Charles F. Payne is also a book writer. On April 4, 2004, he sends me an autographed copy of his book Feedback: Echoes from My Life in Radio. Read his wonderful book cover to cover over and over. Dr. Payne's book's pictures reveal a pleasing story of his radio beginnings on KAND and his rise to radio fame. In October 2004 I snap a photo of Charles at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in San Antonio. He and still another Texas radio legend Ben Laurie and others sit at a table next to ours. Dr. Charles F. Payne's sons Charlie, Jr. and George send the sad news of his passing which is very shocking. Dad's viewing will be held at the Sparkman Hillcrest funeral home this coming Tuesday evening 7-9 pm. The service will be the following Wednesday, July 16th at noon in the same place. The address is 7405 W. Northwest Highway just west of Northpark. We say good-bye to one of radio's greatest human beings and a wonderful friend. This definitely is a reminder that we need to let our friends know how much we appreciate them while they're still alive because when they're gone it's too late.

CHARLIE JR. AND GEORGE PAYNE [Dr. Charles Payne's sons] (Dallas, TX) We regret to inform you of the unexpected passing of our father, the one and only Charlie Payne (Charles Payne, Sr.). Two weeks ago, the doctors adjusted his medications and he kept having low blood sugar reactions and insulin shock symptoms. His nurse found him on the floor of his home at 9 PM on the 10th of July with no sign of breathing or a pulse. Twelve hours of resuscitation efforts could not keep his organs from failing and he was pronounced officially at 3:30 PM on the 11th of July. We know you will join us in enjoying his memories as well as mourning the passing of a really terrific man. We are delighted to have had him as our father. We know that he treasured your friendship and correspondance over the years. Thank you for your heartfelt response. Dad's viewing will be held at the Sparkman Hillcrest funeral home this coming Tuesday evening 7-9 pm. The service will be the following Wednesday, July 16th at noon in the same place. Lyerly worked at KRLD Tv in Dallas as Operations and Program Manager. He was the video producer of the old Humble Oil Game of the Week. He went on to form Nevin Lyerly Productions, and produced sports events for the old Southwest Conference, the NCAA, NFL, and college football bowl games. MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim...It saddened me to hear about the passing of Murphy Martin. Out of curiosity, either because I saw Mr. Martin's name on one of your newslwrrwes, or from surfing the net. I e-mailed him to share memories of his days with WFAA, Channel 8 TV, and of course, his own show, "Face To Face With Murphy Martin". I still had his responce e-mail listed in my "Inbox" file. I'm glad I did. I also couldn't believe that was Jan. 5, 2007. Mr. Martin thanked me for remembering. He mentioned doing a column each Thursday for radio News Directors internet site. He also listed murphymartin.com as the site to go to if I was interested in pulling up and viewing any past columns he had written. I never met the man. I wish I could have. I do, however, remember seeing him quite frequently on Channel 8, WFAA, D/FW. He concluded the e-mail with, "I hope your New Year is filled with joy, happiness and good health! Again, thanks for rembembering MM. Jim...I made sure I printed out that e-mail. You know, sometimes when you contact a celebrity like that, they may not respond. Mr. Martin did...and he was very kind and gracious. Thank you Mr. Martin for everything...and goodbye. Mike Ray Hartman
SALLY WILLIAMS (Brenham, TX) McLendon had, at various times, KLIF, Dallas, KTSA, San Antonio, KEEL, Shreveport, KILT, Houston, WRIT, Milwaukee, KABL, San Francisco, KELP, EL Paso, WYSL, Buffalo. Sold in tandem with his in-laws KNOE and WNOE in Louisiana. Actually did change call letters of KTSA to KAKI, only to find out it was not a nice word in Spanish and changed them back. Also had WAKY in Louisville. Probably more, but those are all for sure. I worked at WRIT in the 50’s and KILT in the 60’s. Bev Weaver can back up my facts, she was there, too. Everyone else is pretty much gone on.

NEWSCAST OUTSOURCES
It's just a matter of time that outsourcing hits TV station newscasts, too, but at least this time it remains here in America. NBC affiliate WHO TV CH-13 in Des Moines, IA announces an agreement to produce a newscast for Sinclair Fox affiliate KDSM TV CH-17 in Fall 2008. WHO TV's specially produced newscast airs on Fox KDSM CH-17 during its 9-10pm news telecast Monday through Friday and at 9-9:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Dale R. Woods, WHO Regional VP/GM, says, This is a tremendous opportunity to service central Iowa viewers in this relatively new time period. Mike Wilson, KDSM GM, chips in, KDSM Fox 17 is excited to extend the current half hour of local news coverage for our viewers to an hour-long newscast on weeknights. With the Channel 13 news team and resources we will be able to bring Central Iowa great coverage and more in-depth stories of local community news, sports and weather.

MORE NEWSPAPER STAFF CUTS
By the end of August, 2008 the Chicago Tribune eliminates about 80 of its current 578 positions in its newsroom and reduces its number of published pages by 13-14% each week. And if that's not enough, there's also job reductions in other Chicago Tribune departments. That number of cutbacks is not public information right now. A Chicago Tribune spokesman declines comments on the subject.

GUARDIAN SELLS OUT TO TRINITY
According to a recent FCC filing. the owner of the small .2 Network, Guardian Enterprise Group, sells its only TV station, WSFJ TV (DMA 32) Columbus, OH, to the ever-expanding Trinity Broadcasting, home of Paul and Jan Crouch's Praise the Lord ministry. Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) is the largest Christian television network with more than 12,500 TV and cable affiliates throughout the world. The general direction of the independent WSFL remains pretty much the same since it already has lots of religious and paid programming but Paul and Jan Crouch have yet another reason to praise the Lord because our guess is that all of those current stock of preachers on WSFJ switch to strictly PTL exhortationers. Richard Schilg is Guardian's CEO. Paul Crouch tends TBN's herd of sheep. From its studios at the Trinity Christian Center in Santa Ana, CA TBN offers all religion all the time.
LIFETIME CHANGES
Andrea Wong, President/CEO of Lifetime Networks announces on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 the resignation of Lifetime entertainment President Susanne Daniels. Susanne joins Lifetime in August 2005 with programming responsibilities on Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women. Daniels agrees to remain in her position until she locates her successor, plus she remains a Lifetime TV consultant.

TOM BIGBY (Dallas, TX/Detroit, MI) I sure hope the Bill Young that posted about life in Lufkin Texas is the same Bill Young of KDOK-KILT. Best Production Person in the Universe...Fame... As a kid out of high school one my first jobs after my hometown radio station in Mansfield, Louisiana was KEES in Gladewater, I remember showing up for work and the first job was moving the tower from West of Gladewater closer to Longview. Years later I bought the station and it never did cover Longview. But I had a dream, (laugh) Bill Young is one of the few radio heroes that I grew up trying to copy their great work that are still around. If Bill reads this, thanks for the inspiration. Tom Bigby, CBS Radio (an old guy still living his dream)
BILL YOUNG (Houston-Sugar Land, TX) Jim...Robert Weathers was sales manager when I was last at WACO (which was actually on two different occasions.) Lee Glasgow was the owner and manager on both occasions...in 1957, I was just out of Hudson high school (country school outside Lufkin), summer of 1957. I was headed to Baylor (going into the ministry, I thought). Art Holt (later a well known radio Consultant) said he could hire me for 9-midnite but he could not wait til fall, needed me to come then! By the time I got there two weeks later, he and the sales manager at the time, Homer Odem, had 'switched' positions. Odem went on to be a long career with McLendon. I left WACO for KOIL in Omaha (morning man), then back to Texas to Tyler and six years at KDOK. Glasgow called and said they had, for the first time, lost the ratings to KWTX and he needed me to help him bring the station back. Time was right so I moved back to WACO...and the "Hooper" ratings were good to us. A year and a half later, the offer from Bill Weaver to move to KILT as PD came. And the rest is increasingly a murky memory...just kidding, it was a wonderful experience for a country boy! Bill, and later Dickie Rosenfeld, were very supportive managers and gave us virtually full reign. Bill Young

BILL YOUNG (Houston-Sugar Land, TX) Sorry to hear about the loss of Murphy Martin...what a kind man he was. He and I both worked for the same company back in 1958. I had moved back home to Lufkin after a year at Baylor and WACO Radio and had taken a job with my 'high school' employer, KTRE Radio. Murphy was the news director and anchor of KTRE TV and, at the time, the only other 'single' man on the staff...so, we got together frequently and 'road around together' as it was called back then. We talked a lot about our 'love life' of which each of us had 'zero' at that moment. As we drove through the main drag in town after lunch one day, the Lufkin Business School was just letting out. Lots of 'women' we had never seen!!! I saw one at the corner that I thought was a knockout and Murphy said he could find out who she was. NEXT NIGHT, we had an 'audition' at the TV station which just happened to include the business school student...a lady who would become my wife for 12 years and the mother of my two sons, Scott and Eric. Pat still lives in Lufkin. Lufkin was very proud of its East Texas 'native son' when he moved to ABC and for the last few years, we communicated frequently via email. Murphy was a good man.
MONTE NENNIG (Houston, TX) Jim, I worked with Rick Upton back in the day at KITY/KONO and I’m trying to contact him. Do you possibly have a cell phone number or email address for him? If you are uncomfortable providing me with this info, can you contact him and give him my email address and cell number, 832-692-7800? He no longer works for My 20 and they have been less than helpful. I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Monte Nennig, ADaBoy Advertising
MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX) Well heck, I reckon I have to pass on my thoughts about Dan Cook. I left KENS/KCWX a little over a year ago to work at mySA.com but I still do VOs for KENS. When anyone walks through the door and hangs a left, there is Dan Cook’s photo. A prominent place for a prominent man. Here’s one of those occasions when using the word legend gives you the definition. Mr. Cook was beloved by everyone and a part of our every day as Tex-Mex food and Texas weather. Back around 1979, 80 he did a short stint at KONO contributing sports reports (hey, remember when radio had a news commitment?) and I’d pass him in the hallway. Always a nice man ready with a wave. Early in my radio days while working at KITY/KONO and KISS/KMAC I also was a DJ at the legendary (there’s that word, again being used in a fitting manner) Crystal Pistol. One night I walked in and Dan Cook was in there with one of his daughters. Again, a nice man who acted like a regular guy. He seemed to be okay with his greatness and I’m sure wouldn’t want folks to make him out to be anything but capable, honest, hardworking, and knowledgeable. Dan Cook was a down to earth fellow who has the respect of everyone who ever knew about him. And when it came to broadcast sports, if Dan Cook said it, then that’s it. Mark Carrillo (www.

MURPHY MARTIN R.I.P (1925-2008)
Another legendary radio-TV newscaster leaves us. On the 4th of July, 1925 East Texas native Murphy Martin is born in Groveton near Lufkin where he graduates from high school in 1942. In the 1960s, we watch Murphy's dramatic news delivery on WFAA TV CH-8 in Dallas, TX. Martin reports solid news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the trial of Jack Ruby. Murphy has his very own bold style of news delivery that captivates his many viewers and fans. In February 1963, Martin leaves WFAA for the ABC TV late-night news anchor spot in NYC plus reporting assignments but in 1967 he returns home to anchor WFAA TV's 6 & 10 pm newscasts. From 1967-68 so very fortunate to be a DJ on WFAA-820 in my hometown of Dallas, TX and that's when I get to know Murphy. Soon discover that he is a true gentleman and a class guy in every aspect. In 1970 he leaves WFAA TV to head up Ross Perot's United We Stand organization for release of American prisoners of war in North Vietnam. In 1972 he returns home to WFAA TV and remains. In the 1980s Martin is the Dallas Cowboys pre-game and halftime announcer at Texas Stadium. Just before 11 pm on Thursday, July 3, 2008 Murphy dies of heart disease at UT Southwestern University Hospital which is a little over an hour before his 83rd birthday. Murphy Martin leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Joyce Martin; son, Mike Martin; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. (www.murphymartin.com) Murphy Martin signs off That's my time; thank you for yours.

HEY MR. OILMAN!
Lately, the main subject on everyone's mind is the outrageously high price of gasoline. Reminds me of the old Johnny Cash tune Five Feet High and Rising. The price for a gallon of our gasoline is $4 a gallon and rising faster than a speeding bullet. Remember how we cry when the price per barrel of oil hits $20? Right now it leaps past $140 a barrel. We need some kind of relief fast! Country music star Ronnie McDowell wakes at 3 am last Thursday with a song on his heart. Ronnie says. When I go on tour with my bus, it costs a little over $1,000 now to fill up. On Monday, June 30, 2008 McDowell rushes to a recording studio in Portland, TN. He has another smash on his hands that is if his record label Curb obliges. The name of McDowell's newest recording is Hey Mr. Oilman. It sounds great and the message is quite clear Hey, Mr. Oilman, we sure could use a break...Old glory is cryin', how much more can we all take...Our wallets are getting thinner while yours is getting fat...and me and all my neighbors are mad as h*** about that. If the name Ronnie McDowell rings a bell it's because he is the one who writes and records The King Is Gone right after Elvis dies on August 16, 1977. When I'm behind the mic on KNUZ-1320 here in Houston, TX we just cannot play McDowell's Elvis tribute enough. That's almost the same effect Ronnie's new recording Hey Mr. Oilman has on me. While these words roll out McDowell's new tune plays over and over again and I like it better each time. Curb records needs to get on the ball and release this hot tune. We Americans are desperate for some kind of relief. This neat tune at least puts smiles on our faces while we shell out the gasoline bucks. Just got a wonderful idea. As the oil companies make billions from our billfolds why don't they play Ronnie McDowell's Hey Mr. Oilman in speakers above the pumps?

CHAPMAN IN CHARGE
Legendary Dallas, TX radio morning voice and programming pro Ron Chapman switches Citadel Country KTYS FM (The Twister 96.7) over to its new 1960s and 1970s-based Classic Hits Platinum 96.7 format. Since Ron retires from radio he seems to be busier than ever. Remember when Sean Connery retires from his role as James Bond after he finishes 1967's You Only Live Twice? Next thing we know Sean bounces right back with a brand new 1983 Bond movie called Never Say Never Again. This is a re-make of James Bond's 4th thriller from 1965 Thunderball. During Chapman's retirement he fills in for another radio legend Paul Harvey in 2008 on his daily syndicated show on ABC Radio Network. Ron does the Paul Harvey newscast in Dallas on ABC satellite Radio Network. In October 2004, when I attend the Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in San Antonio, TX Ron Chapman and his lovely wife join us at our table. He sits right across from me. This is a very special occasion because during high school I and just about all of the citizens of Dallas keep our ears glued to KLIF-1190 as we listen to Ron as Irving Harrigan on the Charlie and Harrigan waker-upper morning show. Those days are when radio is at its finest. Other radio legends on The Mighty 1190 are Chuck Dunaway, Russ Knight (The Weirdbeard), Charlie Van Dyke and Jimmy Rabbitt. Another great pleasure enters my life from 1971-72 as a newscaster on Russ Knight's radio show on Wonderful KBOX-1480 in Dallas my hometown. Russ keeps me in stiches with his charming wit but this time he sits on the other side of a double-paned glass window from my seat in the newsroom. Memories are made of this.

I have been looking for you for a month. These days very few entertainers have my attention but Laura steals my heart. Hold on! There is one holdout. Always has to be at least one in the bunch. Clear Channel Talk WKRC-550 Cincinnati, OH features Premiere's syndicated host Glenn Beck on the 9 am-noon spot and there he remains. Darryl Parks CC-Cincinnati Director of AM operations puts it bluntly, We just decided to go with Glenn Beck. I think Laura Ingraham not being there for the last month certainly played into it, but we had been thinking about it prior to that. To each his own.

NEWS ANCHOR DIES
Steve Lohle longtime news anchor on KQV-1410 in Pittsburgh, PA dies in his Beaver County home from a heart attack on Friday morning, June 20, 2008. The 58-year-old news broadcaster is with KQV for 34 years. DOG RETURNS TO TV!
One of my favorite TV shows next to Dallas Cowboys NFL football and the original Andy Griffith TV show with Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee and Andy is Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E cable TV. Duane Dog Chapman and his family's real life TV show is the #1 show on A&E but drops out of sight in November 2007 due to outside agitators. We fans experience yet another form of censorship from those who attemp to tear down America's First Amendment rights. Which one of these trouble makers gets all excited about the absurd vulgarities which go on in hip hop? A&E caves in to the pressure put on by these antagonists who call themselves Reverends. A&E suspends Dog the Bounty Hunter in November 2007. These malcontents' only job is to disrupt American society. Anyway, we fans can now have shouts of joy because reruns of Dog the Bounty Hunter begin on June 25th and the brand new show returns for a fifth season this summer on A&E TV. Late Thursday nite I see a promo pop up on A&E that says Dog the Bounty Hunter makes a return engagement on July 15, 2008 with all new programs. Rejoice dear hearts! Cameras roll as we speak. We win one more for the Gipper.
TRIBUNE CUTS TO THE BONE
Newspapers have losses in circulation all across America because the trend is to go to the Internet for instant breaking news instead of the long wait until the next morning for newspapers to arrive at our front doors. Tribune owner Sam Zell has a solution for newspapers' falling profits. It's quite simple. Just fire a bunch of employees and that saves a bundle of money. But like what happens in radio's consolidation why not put out a better product? In the Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle it's difficult to find any news that is hidden between full page advertisements. Zell's solution in Hartford, CT is to slash its newsroom staff by 25% which sends 60 employees out the door. The Baltimore Sun tells 100 employees that their services no longer are needed.

DENISE COOK [Nick St John's sister] (Dallas, TX) hi jim, i live near dallas which is not near as pretty as san antonio! and by the way, the email address to bruce hathaway is valid. he had sent an email to nick in april and that's where i got his address to notify him of nick's passing on. (and he did answer me yesterday). it was surprising to me that nick died on monday. the drs. had said he still had 4-5 months, so i was planning accordingly. but the good side is that he was suffering terribly with the symptoms of the cancer and his passing was so much better than living through it for more months. i had been going to down to see him about every month or so. last winter, during one visit he told me so many great stories about his time on the radio. we laughed about the outcomes of those stories...time has a way of making those things funny. but i assure you, all his on-air antics, drinking too much, getting fired, etc. was not so funny to my parents at the time!! but, nick told me he had no regrets about his life. he had done the things he wanted to do and did it the way he wanted to do it. he told me he was ok about dying because of the way he lived. all in all, he was a good hearted guy with good intentions. we are planning on a memorial service for july 12th there in san antonio. i'm still trying to find a place to hold it. i can forward that info if you feel that would be appropriate information to include in your web newsletter. nick wrote a book of sorts, about his life and sent some excerpts of it to jay pennington for use on his website about KEXL. have you seen that site? thanks for your response, denise cook

I was able to isolate and scan this brief bio on Nick St.John (Aubrey Cook)...hope it will be of interest to you...when you get the chance, do a Google search and find and look at "Remembering KEXL". Jay Pennington set up this site and it is really cool. Bob Crowley and I have known each other many years and he is a great source of info...will close for now but as mentioned, I will try my best to help you add more goodies to your site...just get in touch w/me and we'll see what happens...all the best to you and hope to hear from you again. Bobby Reyes, Clear Channel Radio
