UNIVERSAL MUSIC LOSES ARTISTS
In March 1931, the Electric and Musical Industries Ltd forms through a merger of the UK Columbia Graphophone Company & the Gramophone Company. The EMI group based in Kensington in London, England, UK has several record labels, plus EMI Music Publishing based in NY. EMI Music is one of the big four record companies which makes it one of the largest music conglomerates in the world. The new trend has big time recording artists who now make a go of it on their own without major record labels. From 2006-07, EMI Music experiences a huge decline in sales with a financial loss of £260 million. EMI Group's British market share drops from 16% to 9%. Terra Firma equity buys EMI in August 2007 for £3.2 billion. Guy Hands, EMI's new owner, brings restructuring plans to cut 1500–2000 jobs to reduce costs by £200 million a year. The 2008 cuts cover almost one third of EMI's 5500 staff. In January 2008, Tony Wadsworth, EMI's UK chief executive, leaves the building after 25 years at the helm. After the sale, many big recording artists walk out of EMI. Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Robbie Williams & Paul McCartney all either leave or in the process of vacating the EMI Music group. The Stones sign a one-album deal outside their EMI contract which expires in February 2008. But U2's manager Paul McGuiness confirms that U2 sticks with Universal Music. Remember the Titanic?
UMG GOES BIG
On Friday, February 8, 2008, YouTube and the Universal Music Group report streams of 1 billion music videos. This makes it one its most popular YouTube video channels. More than 8 million UMG videos stream each day on YouTube. UMG videos top YouTube's Most Viewed-All Time chart for more than one year. Another astonishing fact is that UMG streams hundreds of millions more videos on YouTube than fellow major media competitors CBS and NBC.

PAUL HARRIS (St. Louis, MO)
Jim, Until I untangle my legal situation with CBS, I won’t be commenting on the layoffs or the state of the industry very much. Thanks for your offer, though, and the words of support!...Paul Harris Always on www.HarrisOnline.comSALLY WILLIAMS (Brenham, TX) Our 20 year old grandson, Harris, was seriously wounded last Tuesday when the lead vehicle he was driving on a mission in Baghdad was struck by an IED. He was med-evacuated to Landstuhl Hospital in Germany for surgery, to a hospital in Maryland for more surgery and is now at Eisenhower Medical Center in Augusta, GA, for still more work. He has two broken legs, one much worse than the other, a broken elbow and considerable shrapnel. Prayers from friends, family and strangers have supported him and his family. We hope that he will be allowed to do rehab at BAMC in San Antonio which is just minutes from home and family. We are very proud of our Purple Heart soldier! Sally Williams
JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Very ugly situation, Jimbo. We have been totally bamboozled! Our choices seem to have been manipulated by handful of special interest groups that run this country. 300 million people and we are dealt this losing hand! I feel as if we're not far from complete socialism!
