ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LEAP YEAR IS HERE
What do you do when your birthday falls on February 29th? Cari Gelber of NYC opens her eyes as a new-born baby 28 years ago. She works at an East Village bar by the name of the Village Pourhouse. Cari plans to celebrate the seven times that her birthday arrives in a way to possibly make Peter Pan jealous. Gelber rings in her 7th birthday party as a special kids-themed bash on Friday, February 29, 2008. She fabricates a big, green frog piñata full of drink tickets. Also, games like Candy Land, Twister, and Chutes & Ladders are on the bill. Cari hires a balloon artist. Party hats are ready. She features Strawberry Shortcake and Superman gift bags with mini Play-Doh. She invites all NYC leap-year baby celebrants to attend. Let's call in The Box Tops: Give me a ticket for an airplane. Ain't got time for a fast train.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Subject: news. Good morning Jim, just to let you know my brother Sam Pate is very ill. He has had another heart attack. He came home from the hospital yesterday but so very weak he has to use a walker. I believe now he will be in and out of the hospital. I am afraid he has given up on his health and could use some cheering up. He has accepted the fact he is only going to get worse as days go by. Seems his memories of the radio days somehow keep him going. Sam has congested heart failure. The doctor says the only part of his lungs working are about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I would like for his radio buddies and others to send him a note of cheer. His address is 8009 Shasta, McKinney, TX 75071.

DAVE LANE (Nashville, TN) Subject: Funniest Thing That Ever Happened. More than once I overheard Dave Morris make a comment about KQUE being the only station in Houston that was making money. We all knew why that was probably true. I had to bite my tongue many times while I was working there but there weren't any other stations in the market where I wished to be. JEFF MACK (Houston-Cleveland, TX) Subject: KTHT to KULF. Jim...I was hired at KULF just after the call letter change in mid 1971. Bill Bosse was GM and Nat Stevens PD. Originally I was hired to work weekends and fill in. I remember that summer I worked pretty much full time on the air just filling in for folks on vacation. Gary Hoffman did mornings, Buddy Holliday middays, Hal McClain afternoons, Bill Grant evenings, Matt Guinn late evenings and Jim Shannon midnight to 5:30AM. JIm Tate came in to do mornings and Ron Morgan to do mid-days and Joe Bower for afternoons. David Fowler was the news director and shared morings with Jim Tate. Joe Bower was a very funny guy. He was probably the first jock I ever saw write his own comedy. He developed several characters aired daily on his afternoon show. Dewy Compost came from Dewy Compton from KTRH's lawn and garden show, probably the funniest of them all. By the time I left in 1974, I was doing 7 to midnight. KULF had one of the finest radio studios I ever saw. They had converted the old Cork Club at the top of the Central National Bank Building, 2100 Travis. It truely was a show place. Those years were certainly exciting at KULF. It was a lot of fun...Keep up the good work Jim...Jeff (Mack) McClain

JOHN CALLARMAN (Krum, TX) Does anyone know if and when Jim Fuller might be today? Jim was in sales at KNOE in 1961 and KLIF in 1963.

DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: New site. Hi Jim, I've been out of the country for most of the past two weeks (China and Australia, from winter snowstorms to mid-summer). I was planning to write you about your web site conundrum, and then I found that not only had you solved the problem, you came up with a site that looks better than ever! Congratulations, Dan

DON BARRETT (Los Angeles, CA) Subject: you asked. I think simple is better. Let people get in, get their information, and then get out. You have accomplished that. A couple of thoughts: You repeat the same information like Important Links column after column. Why not put them in a stationery place, like on the left, which will allow people to scroll easily. Listing the column #s with a date doesn't help the search effort. Would it be helpful to have the lead story headline for reference? A photo here and there will greatly enhance the reading ease and likeability. Continued good luck. don barrett, LARadio.com

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX) Subject: your site. I love the length of the newsletter but, can you get your web-slinger to move the margin over? In order to read anything you have to go to the bottom and scroll back and forth for each sentence. Whew, that’s exhausting…especially for someone like me whose idea of exerting himself is to have to reach longer than arms length for the tv remote. You have all of that wasted space on the left. That can certainly be cured. Since I sell advertising dreams on the #3 media website in America, I know a little bit about layout. Oh yeah, I was also editor of my high school paper. Your internet consultant, Mark Carrillo, Account Executive, MySA.com

FRANCIS BACON (January 22, 1561-April 9, 1626) Sir Henry Wotton used to say that critics are like brushers of noblemen’s clothes.
