BLUES GUITARIST SUCCUMBS
Internationally successful Grammy-nominated Blues-Rock-Jazz vocalist/guitar player, Jeff Healey, dies at only 41. Jeff suffers from cancer since he is a child and loses his eyesight to Retinoblastoma. At 3, Healey teaches himself to play the guitar and by the time he's a teen he's a master picker. In the summer of 1989, Jeff's single, Angel Eyes, hits #5 on Billboard. Platinum sales of his See The Light album brings international success. Healey and his trio appear in the 1989 movie Road House with Patrick Swayze. Jeff''s vast record collection contains 30,000 disks. On his radio show, Healey plays selections from his own record library. Sadly, Jeff dies just one month before his new album, Mess of Blues, hits the stores. This is Healey's first Rock album in 8 years. Jeff passes away at the St Joseph's Health Center in Toronto which is his hometown. Jeff Healey leaves a wife and two children.

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, I worked at KULF on that parquet dance floor in the penthouse of the bank building from September 1974 to June 1976. Bill Wamsley was the PD then and when I applied for a job there he talked me into taking the all night show, temporarily I was assured, until a day shift opened. Several did, but once they find somebody who actually shows up at every night at midnight, they are loathe to move him. Wamsley left for Cincinnati and I asked Bill Bosse, the manager if there was a way I could move to days anytime soon. He said he couldn't promise anything, so I left. There were some great guys there then. Jim Tate did mornings, then Jim Heath. Joe Bauer afternoons and a guy named Gary, can't remember last name did 7 to midnight. My weekend shift was Saturday from 6 til midnight, then back again Sunday at midnight, so my one day off, Sunday was exactly 24 hours. There was a guy in sales named Frank Costa who is now at CC, I believe. Ironically, I worked about a year doing fill in at 790 KBME just before they switched to sports talk. How did this thread about 790 get started? I must have missed it. Mike Marshall
DAVE MICHAELS (Culver City, CA) Hey Jim...speaking of that famous Frequency 790 kc. I was at WMC 790 Memphis from 1985-89 doing Middays. Scripps Howard Station on Union Ave, in Midtown Memphis. Worked with Aunt Elouise & Chuck Findley mornings, Jim McCloud, Jim Tabor, Bob McClain and Ron Jones was PD-Gm. We were all thrown under the bus in 89 when WMC-790 went from Country to News talk, and never acheived better ratings at doing that format under Oliver C. Reed. He took the station into nothings-ville for the next so many years; a fine gentlemen who I used to drink with in Midtown Memphis. Bob McClain referred to me as the "Mayor of Overton Square" until Ron Jones told him to knock it off. I didn't care at the time. J&B was good to me. ha ha... Dave Michaels - Culver City, Ca.
ED HILDER (Tyler-Grand Saline, TX) Hello Jim! Was reading on the internet about KQUE in Houston and found an article with you. Jim, I have been trying to find someone or someplace that might have some of the old KQUE FM 102.9 jingles! I am a collector, and KQUE was the only station I ever liked. Can you help or point me in the right direction? Many thanks! Regards, Ed Hilder
DAVE LANE (Nashville, TN) Some time (maybe '91 or '92) Dave Morris mentioned, as I opened my pay envelope, that he had GIVEN me a nickel an hour raise (this was after about 5 years of committed service!)...I told him that I hadn't noticed but thanks anyway. "Committed" was a good description of all of his employees. Dave Lane Nashville Country Countdown (
