DAVE CLARK 5 SINGER DIES
On March 10, 2008 the Dave Clark 5 inducts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but its lead singer and keyboard player, Mike Smith, is not in attendance. In September 2003, Mike falls from a fence at his home in Spain. This leaves him paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body. He remains hospitalized since the unfortunate accident. His agent, Margo Lewis, says in December 2007, he moves into a specially prepared home near the hospital with his wife. Due to his spinal cord injury he develops a chest infection. On Wednesday, March 5, 2008 he goes into intensive care but dies at 64 from pneumonia on Thursday, March 6th. The Dave Clark 5 is a big part of the British Invasion with hits like Glad All Over (#6-1964), Bits and Pieces (#4-1964), Do You Love Me (#11-1964), Can't You See That She's Mine (#4-1964), Because (#3-1964) and their #1 tune Over and Over in 1965. There are other Top 10 hits, too. John Boorman's 1965 documentary Catch Us If You Can follows Smith and his DC5 band mates through Bristol in England. By 1966, the DC5 makes 12 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show which then is a record for any British group. Mike Smith leaves behind his wife Arlene who close friends call Charlie.

DADE MOORE (Houston, TX) Jim, Tell Bob Edwards who was my old PD when I was on the air at 1230 KNUZ after Dr. Bruce Nelson. There is the KKBQ History Page. www.93Q.FM. Tell him to fill in all the blanks and email them over to me. I had heard a story in the past as well that 790 was first on 1520 am in south Houston and then moved to north Houston off of frick rd where it is now. How much truth there is in this i was to young at the time. I do remember super 79 KULF even in 1980 KYST 920 did an upgrade to 5 KW and went top 40 and later betal radio number 9. I do know the owner of 1520 Matt filed in the late 80's for 1520 am up in Cypress, Tx. and got it on the air and picked up the call letters after we dropped them from what is now KKBQ fm and we were not on 92.9 at the time or Sr. Rd at 2000 ft. There is a lot of History here for sure. I am still the engineer for KLVL 1480. It is still located on pasadena Blvd. See Ya. ROD TANNER (Houston, TX) Great to see the note from Nick St. John. I've been asking about Nick for years. Glad to see he is still alive and kicking. Keep up the good work. Rod

JOHNNY SHANNON (San Antonio, TX) Jim Hi, Would you please send me Nick St.John's email address, or at least send him mine, so he might write.. Been trying to cach up with Nick for a long time. Here's the Jay Pennington link he spoke of about old S.A. radio:
www.city-data.com/forum/san-antonio/103682-san-antonio-radio-stations-past-9.html It has good stuff about KEXL and other stations. Best to you, JS

NICK ST JOHN (San Antonio, TX) Jim, Thanks so much for the communication and wonderful feedback. I'm living in San Antonio, retired, and as happy as a person could ever hope to be. Thanks for Johhny Shannon's email, I'll try to contact him soon. I also noticed an email response from Gary Allyn in San Diego. I admit I was shocked. I figured he had just disappeared never to be heard from again. He brought Boss Radio to KONO about 1967 and helped me have the #1 ratings for 3 straight years. You've got a great site that brings back lots of memories. It must take a h*** of a lot of work, and you really do a fantastic job. Thanks again for everything. ~Nick

PAUL KELLY (Hemet, CA) Hey hey Hey Jimbo, Well I am in the "Inland Empire" of southern California, as it is known by local media types. It is in the lower desert region of Southern California, as opposed to the High desert which is up around Barstow, and Victorville. We are surrounded by mountains, but are actually in the valley. Good to hear about Danny being the one! From KBAT You wanted interesting stories about my radio experience, well Danny Rosen is one of them. As my memory serves me, Danny Rosen was in an Explorer group that I was conducted at good old KBAT. He was later hired as an outside reporter, and worked the board also as a newsman. When he started he was "Danny" Rosen, but whether by his choice, or he was instructed, he changed it from "Danny" to "DAN". Sounded older I guess, I loved teasing him about that. George Jay, was George Johnston, and worked at KONO in the late 60's early 70's, then moved down south of Alamo City and worked In Corpus, or somewhere down there. He is the one that introduced most of us to "Linda Oh Wow" do you remember her? She was a great fan of most of us in Alamo City radio at that time. Whew! So I guess the George Jay of NY radio fame is the wrong one! Yeah I remember the Leon Valley Cop I think his name was Lopez, or something like that. He got me too on my first going to work for KBAT.

BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Hello Jim! I wasn't expecting to read about me in your awesome column. I never miss a beat to read all three of them each week. What an enjoyable surprise Jim. Thank you very much, for your positive words. We are all thrilled you have this nice website. Hope you and Tejas are doing "better than good" as my friend and mentor Zig Ziglar loves to say. THE FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2008 ISSUE #474 of JRRR has a message from Ed Hilder where he requests copies of the old KQUE FM station I-Ds and jingles. Inadvertanly, his email address doesn't appear. We'll give it another shot. Here's part of Friday's message: ED HILDER (Grand Saline-Tyler, TX) edhilder@gmail.com Jim...I truly miss those one of a kind jingles! My favorite was "Entertaining in Houston, This is KQUE " and a big classic, "280,000 watts vertically, 280,000 watts horizontally" I grew up in Houston... Hopefully I will find someone that has some of those station id's and jingles! If you have copies of any KQUE FM jingles and I-Ds Ed sure would like copies of them.

GRADY MCALLISTER (Houston, TX)
Hello, Jim, Thanks for providing some of the background on AM 790. I was surprised to discover that there is a Wikipedia article which already covers some of the same territory as my article. (I am still looking for the exact year when the call letters KULF were adopted.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KBME_(AM) This article offers exact dates in 1982 and 1998 when the call letters KKBQ and KBME, respectively, were adopted. That is shown in the data table on the right. However, the article is inconsistent. The main text on the left indicates that the pop standards format lasted fifteen years. That is unlikely: AM 79Q and KKBQ-FM (93Q) simulcast until the late 1980s. At that point, the AM station became adult standards 790 KBME (for "Best Music Ever"). In 2004, the station flipped to an all sports station. I'd like to know who wrote the article. R. Grady McAllister, PO Box 87518, Houston, TX 77287, Houston Radio History: http://vasthead.com.
