ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
This joyful day usually falls on March 17th but in 2008 it's on Saturday, March 15th because the Roman Catholic Church changes the date to avoid conflict with Holy Monday that falls on March 17th. So we have to remember to wear our green on Saturday to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland & the Irish. He is born about 389 A.D. in Northern Wales. He brings Christianity to Ireland and teaches there for 29 years. He uses the shamrock, a 3 leaf clover, (Ireland's national flower) to ilustrate the Blessed Trinity. St. Patrick founds 365 churches, baptized over 120,000 saints and consecrates 450 bishops. There are many fascinating stories about this well-liked saint. One of the most favorite legends is how he charms all the snakes of Ireland down to the seashore to be drowned by the water. St. Patrick dies on or about March 17, 461 A.D. We observe the anniversary of his death on what we call St. Patrick's Day.
CUMULUS MERGES
A consent order files with the SEC on Thursday, March 13, 2008 that permits Cumulus to merge with an investment group led by Lewis Dickey who is Chairman/President/CEO. This has to pass approval by the stockholders, FCC, plus other normal closing requirments. This deal is a long time in coming because it begins back in July 2007. At the time, Dickey says, This transaction represents an important chapter in our Company’s history. We strongly believe in this industry and in the long-term opportunities to grow the business. I look forward to working closely with our talented team and our new partners to build upon our success.

CRAIG POWERS (Las Vegas, NV) Jim, Thanks so much for reaching out to me and for sending me "Jim Rose Remembers Radio! What a great treat to receive in my email. I love the positive outlook and friendly emails from so many of your fans and colleagues around the country! What a refreshing change from most of the other radio boards that are out there fueling negativity among the industry that we love so much! Thanks for everything that you do for us! Best, Craig Powers
NIELS MARTIN-BBC (London, England) Hi Jim, I am in north london, been very windy and rainy here recently
DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Hi Jim, Paul Kelly's memory is accurate both about how I entered radio (through an Explorer group that he coordinated) and about how the "ny" came to be dropped from my name. My life can be roughly divided into the Danny and Dan periods. Those, like Paul, who were present for the five-letter period played an especially large part in allowing me to have a career in broadcasting. I think I missed the earlier reference, but in his latest posting, Paul mentioned something about a Leon Valley policeman. That caused some long-dormant neurons to fire up, and I recall that the Police Chief of Leon Valley was named Marcy Trump (not sure about the spelling though). I believe he smoked a big cigar and looked like the guy you would cast in the role if you were making a movie. At that time, the landmark of Leon Valley was the Texas Star Inn, a honky tonk that was close enough to the KKYX studios that one could order a hamburger, drive down the road to get it, and be back to read the news on the half-hour. Last time I was in SA, I drove down the same stretch of road. It's shopping centers, car deals, and mainstream suburbia now. Wonder if the Leon Valley traffic enforcement remains as vigilant as before. Best, Dan (aka Danny) Rosen
MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: Movers in Shakers in Cincinnati Radio. You had just posted in your article...under movers and shakers that Andy Furman who had been the sports talk host for 18 years on WLW radio here in Cincinnati, plus 1 year on cumulus owned WFTK FM also with a sports talk show, said "His radio career was over," because that station switched to an all Rock format. It's true. Andy did said that. But you missed the blog which is still there entiltled "Andy Furman Resurfaces". Beginning last month he does 1 minute commentaries on oldies 1160 WDJO-AM. He does it at exactly 7:55am Mon-Fri on Oldies Host Dusty Rhodes Show. So no his radio career is not over! He also writes a weekly news column called "Smoke Rings" in the Pulse of Cincinnati Downtowner Newspaper. To verify this information even more, you can look up the newspaper article written by John Kieswetter on Jaunuary 27,2008 entitled "Letterman seeking Cincinnati Pet tricks". Furman getting the WDJO job is under the section of the article with the subtitle "Around the Dial". That section acknowleges that because Andy did say his radio career was over, the operations manager of WDJO Roger Kay offered Andy the gig. He does commentaries on more subjects than just sports. He always opens them with "Here's my take". If you would like to talk to Andy yourself, you can email him at
ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Jim, Please pass-on to my friends Dade Moore and Bob Edwards that the 790 transmitter site, prior to the one on Hansom (where they are now), was located to the south-southeast of the San Jacinto Monument, off of Miller Cut-Off Rd. I believe it was sometime in the 70's when they moved from there to the Hansom location. I know it was prior to my stint at KULF in 1981. Thanks, Andy
NICK ST. JOHN (San Antonio, TX) Subject: The Passing of Ken Carter. Just read Bill Riley's comments about the passing of Ken Carter. I first met Ken when he was Program Director of KRIO in McAllen, Texas when I was applying for a job as a disc jockey at every station from Laredo to Brownsville in 1963, and then about 3 years later I wound up working with Ken when he was Production Manager and did the noon to 3pm shift (right after Gary Allyn did the 9am to noon shift) at KONO in San Antonio. I'm truly sorry to hear of his passing. ~Nick
WILD BILL RILEY (San Antonio, TX) Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #464 Kudos to the website look--looks sensational & to add to Carillo's comments, would be happy to subscribe.
WENDEL HULSE (Dallas-Grand Prairie, TX) Comment: Jim, your new setup looks great and reads very well. I like it!
RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hey Jim great web site. Excellent my young friend! Well I see a few more of my friends and Colleagues are being let go at USA Radio due to IRN buying them out. Jim...The Bates who own it have stretched their credentials quite a bit and their newscasts are something in the style of what you would have heard from the Alps in World War Two. My prayers to the dismissed colleagues at USA but consider it a blessing to not work for IRN. Ray
DAVID PERKINS (Ft. Worth, TX) To all my friends, family and neighbors. Sorry to bother you again but there's a really nice story about our ministry in this morning's Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Some of you have let me know you've seen it. But for those of you who haven't and would like to, here's the link. It may be gone tomorrow. I don't know how long the Star-Telegram keeps things on-line. (www.star-telegram.com/religion/story/490417.html) David Perkins, The Jesus Christ Said Ministries (www.JesusChristSaid.com)
CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston, TX) As you may have heard the Bush Administration said each one of us would now get a nice rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, it will all go to China. If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs, and neither will help the American economy. We need to keep those rebates here in America, so the only way to keep that money here at home is to buy beer, tobacco or spend it on prostitution, since those are about the only businesses still left in the U.S.
ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955) We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.
