WEST COAST RADIO
SEATTLE, WA - KCBS FM (91.3) community radio establishes itself in 1973 with a staff of volunteer presenters. In 2008 London-based international digital radio and television transmission provider WRN signs with KCBS FM to re-transmit its 24 hour news and current affairs programming. This gives KCBS FM an entree into international performances on operations like KBS in Korea, RCI in Canada and RNWI in the Netherlands. Peter Graff, KBCS FM Program Director says WRN is a great fit for our information-hungry listeners, providing global news and perspectives that push beyond what’s on the radio dial here in Seattle. Marina Lois, Product Development & Distribution Manager at WRN, says KBCS is a leading speech radio station in the Washington state market and WRN is very happy to be able to provide them with news and current affairs programming from its North American network.

SACRAMENTO, CA - Rejoice dear hearts! On Sunday, March 30, 2008 KSAC-1240 Diamond Broadcasting liberal Talk becomes KRJY Gospel Rejoice 1240. The KSAC Web site says it's under construction. We know those words quite well.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Savage Nation reups its contract with Talk Radio Network to continue its syndication of Michael Savage's daily talk show on its flagship KNEW-910, plus a reported 300-plus affiliates. Michael's show is on the air Monday through Friday from 6-9pm (ET). Savage also is the author of four bestselling books that include The Savage Nation, The Enemy Within, Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder and The Political Zoo. No terms to report but TRN says the new contract extension means Savage will remain one of the top syndicated shows for years. Mark Masters, TRN CEO, adds We are proud to extend Michael Savage's contract. Michael is always challenging the audience and himself. I think this is the main reason he continues to be a ratings juggernaut coast-to-coast.
BAKERSFIELD, CA - KGEO-1230 American General Media changes from Talk to ESPN Radio with new PD Corey Costello at the helm. Local shows are Jake Stevens 7-9 am, The Radio Store noon-3 pm and Corey Costello 3-5 pm. Also on board are Premiere's Jim Rome and ESPN's Mike & Mike plus other network events.

ROY LEMONS (Grove, OK) I was the GM of KJET (r&b) and KWIC FM (100,000 W) for 3 years between 1969-72. Not sure if you want to print this or not but black problems in Golden Triangle then were many, with most of the Klan guys from Vidor starting the problems. We had a beautiful brand new building with a glass dj room which stuck out from the front of the building. One early evening the Klan came by and riddled the glass with bullets while the DJ was on the air. The best I remember is we bricked it in and it stayed that way. KJET had Boy Brown as PD with a great crew. KWIC, was a rocker and there was a kid on in the afternoon with a great voice, Michael Joel Block, son of famed NY dj Martin Block who had a show on WNEW in NY that went national on ABC Radio for several years, entitled "Make Believe Ballroom". Block was the highest paid DJ in the world for several years in the early 40's. His 2 and a half hour daily show had an audience of 4 million people a day in NYC alone. His contract on ABC netted him 2 million dollars in 1948. I would kill for a copy of a "Make Believe Ballroom" show, Block was an incredible salesman. Michael sounded just like his famed father. I remember as a kid running home from school to turn on WFAA 570 or KGKO as it was called then to listen to "Make Believe Ballroom." Back to KJET, running black stations in those days was quite a challenge, my first day at WBOK New Orleans in 1972 the jocks were on strike and picketing the station. We had 3 unions, a lot of lawyers. The fact that we were primarily owned by William F Buckley didn't help. An officer of the parent company, Starr broadcasting, Mike Starr also decided to run for Congress against an incumbent black guy didn't help matters. New Orleans was a great place to visit but a tough place to live with a young family. I remember Gene Dickerson at Ft, Worth, great fellow. Enjoy your column. Roy
GENE DICKERSON is the excellent GM of KTRM-990 in Beaumont, TX who lures me from KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX to be Music Director and noon-3pm DJ in the Golden Triangle. The bargaining process goes on for a week and nets me double what I make on KXOL in the same capacity. Gene has a great sense of humor. We have lots of fun. But he exits KTRM to be GM of 50,000 watt clear channel KWKH-1130 in Shreveport, LA and leaves me in the middle of a barrel full of vicious snakes. After my 1 year contract expires in August 1977, I hit the I-10 road in my Dodge Charger at break-neck speeds to KIKK FM here in Houston, TX.
FRANK JOLLEY (Los Angeles, CA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#484-31) March 31, 2008 [Monday] Mutual admiration society Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly - Frank Jolley 1957 aboard the USS Saipan. Jim, It was the B side of "True Love" their big Hit, from the movie High Society. FJ
MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY by Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly is the version that I remember as a kid growing up in Dallas, TX as I listen to The Mighty Eleven Ninety KLIF-1190 and Wonderful KBOX-1480 but their version never lands on the Billboard Pop Hot 100 chart. Figure that one out.
GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Lee Baby Simms. Howdy Jimbo: I enjoyed reading Lee Simms' two cents worth on the upcoming election. I haven't talked to that dude in 40 years! I worked with him at KCBQ back in '68. Hows come you don't include email addresses like you used to do with your incoming emails? How can I shoot Lee Baby? ...er, I mean shoot him a few lines? Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, I appreciate the KBIM studios picture. I helped John and Betty King the owners move into that building from the KBIM Tv studio in downtown Roswell in November of 1987. Leslie
TRIVIA ANSWER: Tracy Byrd performs The Truth About Men live along with Country greats Andy Griggs, Blake Shelton & Montgomery Gentry.
CHARLES DRAKE (Ocean-going Mariner in Houston, TX port) They frown on us discussing what we do and where we do it. Let's just say that I've been to places with cargo in some hot-spot regions. As I said before they don't like us using the computer for long. But, when I read your recent bit about something I had some knowledge I had to put in my two-cents worth. Already leaving again. The life of a career mariner is...here today...gone tomorrow for a LONG time. I like your new website. P.S. be sure to vote. They let us vote early. It gets a bit complicated voting when you're at sea, but it's sort of like they do in the military. They do make such available. Any more than that I'm not at liberty to discuss. I signed papers and took a pledge when I signed on. I'm sure you understand. (And, I'd hate to have to walk the plank! Ha-Ha!) So long until another day. Best to you. Charles the Sailor Man
RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1803-1882) The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.
