APRIL FOOL'S RADIO PRANKS
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - On Friday, March 28, 2008 KKOB-770 Citadel Talk Program Director Pat Frisch announces that the 50,000 watt clear channel radio station is going to cut its power to 1000 watts because other metro areas needed more wattage on KKOB's 770 frequency. This starts a grassfire with NM listeners. Instantly 2,500 listeners sign an outrage petition on KKOB's Web site. The NM Governor's office calls an emergency meeting of the NM Broadcasters Association. NM Congresswoman Heather Wilson's office offers help on this hot item. The Albuquerque Journal contacts the FCC. Heavens to Betsy! It's just a humongous April Fool's joke. Gotcha big time.
PHOENIX, AZ - KTAR is well-known for its April Fool's pranks. KTAR announces to its listeners that during an overnight session the state of Arizona decides that to cover its proposed $1 billion budget shortfall all Phoenix freeways become tool roads. KTAR reports that since AZ cannot build the tool booths quick enough, temporary stations on the Phoenix freeways have employees with buckets to collect the new tolls. KTAR Program Director Russ Hill says he plans this clamity in March 2008 and fills the AZ Department of Transportation in on the prank. Telephones and street talk are aflame with this disaster until KTAR announces that it is all a hoax. Some local journalists question if a news radio station loses credibility with a stunt like this. KTAR PD Russ Hill says Get a sense of humor.

JONATHON FRICKE (Nashville, TN) Hi Jim, Thought you might enjoy hearing this trip down memory lane:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWveOetr5-E&feature=related All the best, Jonathan Fricke, Nashville, TNDAVID MCCARBLE (Houston, TX) Paul Berlin back in the 50's played a song that I have been trying to find for quite some time. I think the name is "Doodie Woo" Could you help me with this? Thanks
WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Local hit, Doddy Woo by Wee Willie Wayne...real name of song is "I remember".
ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Wee Willie Wayne's song was "Doodie Woo," that is what Paul Berlin always called it. The actual title is "I Remember." Cleveland Crochet's song was entitled "Sugar Bee." Was it one of those songs?
ROY LEMONS (Grove, OK) The dominant R&B station in Beaumont/Port Arthur was always KJET, owned by Tom Gibson. I thought KALO was Lake Charles. I'm probably wrong. Roy Lemons
LEGENDARY KJET call letters no longer exist on the AM or FM dial in Beaumont, TX. KJET-1380 with black music is now all news as KRCM-1380. KJET calls are available for the taking on the AM dial. But KJET FM has an FCC license to South Bend, WA as 105.7 The Jet. The present KDEI-1250 has a religious format licensed to Pt. Arthur, TX. It is the old KALO-1250. The original Country KTRM-990 calls where I was Music Director and noon-3pm DJ from 1976-77 are now KZZB-990 with Gospel music. The Big Bopper J.P. Richardson is a KTRM DJ in the late 1950s. Willie Nelson is a former KTRM DJ. Hate it when radio station call letters change. Radio history goes right out the door. Someone has to try to document the changes and I do my best to keep rolling with the flow.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, Texas) Subject: Nice Work. Hi, I like your new column except sometimes the part gets clipped off at the edges, but that is my computer's fault. I took a course in Humanities at El Centro, my teacher was Alan Govenor who also was teaching at UTD upper classes. He sold me a book of his about Texas Blues. In the book there is a picture of Little Richard as a dee jay at KFJZ, I am wondering when it was taken, since it does not show the date. When I was working at a grocery store there was a lady I helped with her groceries getting them to her car. She had a shirt with a picture of Cat Simon. I asked her about it just to make small talk. She told me it had come from her father who worked in radio. I made the mistake of asking... I realize children hate that sort of thing. Like people would ask me about my parents and I would tell them if they really wanted to know call them. I have found that people always make offers that end in propositions that mean I get to work with out proper pay. I have found in a card game that is stacked I like to get my cut at the first... I was eating at a restaurant once when the chef/cook says,"Charles, what are you doing here? You are in the wrong part of town. Besides I know you could cook this yourself." It turns out we had a cooking class together. I am sometimes surprised by who actually remembers me, like playing my guitar with others for fun at Lee Park. I almost joined up with the Children Of God, but some how I just could not buy the Jesus they were trying to sell. Anyway this made me think of a song I have of Ella Fitzgerald singing "Nice Work If You Can Get It". My father loved music and he had lots of books and recordings. My mother decided to ask UNT in Denton whether they would be interested and they said yes,so now they have been donated to the music library there. It took 8 people my mother told me to haul it off. My favorite song by War was Slippin' Into Darkness. There was a Pizza Inn across from the stadium at ETSU, Commerce and I would go in there order me a pizza and play the song and others on the Juke Box. I use to write poetry and the manager had me write a poem for him in exchange for a Pizza. I thought it was a good deal. Charles George, KC5RAI
TRIVIA ANSWER: Country Superstar Faith Hill is born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967 in Jackson, MS.
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Jim I called to check on Sam and for the first time, he sounded so excited. He had received a letter from one of his radio buddies, and he read it over and over. It gave him a burst of energy. He forgot to tell me who it was from. So whoever wrote, I say "May the good Lord bless you as you blessed our Sam" Once again, his address is Sam Pate...8009 Shasta; McKinney, TX 75071. It is the little things in life we do for others that make us feel good.
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950) I can forgive Alfred Nobel for having invented dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize.
