ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

EAST COAST
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) sends a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin that urges him to demonstrate the backbone to enforce [FCC] rules and reject the XM-Sirius merger.

NEW YORK CITY - The question of the day is Does she or does she not? Katie Couric leave CBS News? Heaven forbid! But the witty Ms. Katy suffers through two years of bottomless pit ratings. If you remember, Couric is the 1st female solo network TV newscast anchor since the invention of the tube. The Wall Street Journal reports on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 that she just might exit that cherished newscast anchor chair as early as winter 2009.

NEW YORK CITY - Another famous TV network news anchor enters the picture. Former CBS TV news ace Dan Rather sues his previous employer in September 2007 to the tune of $70 million. Dan claims that CBS TV News treats him unfairly and bows to political pressures after his September 2004 news report about President Bush's military service proves to be false. Rather also is upset because CBS TV News forces him to apologize which causes him to be the subject of TV comedy parodies. Leno and Letterman have to fill their space somehow. Dan complains this is all because CBS TV News wants to be on the good side of the Bush administration. But on Thursday, April 10th, NY State Supreme Court Judge Ira Gammerman dismisses Rather's lawsuit against CBS chairman Sumner Redstone, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves and former CBS News president Andrew Heyward.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Randy Owen lead singer for Grammy winning Country group Alabama receives the Paul G. Rogers Public Service Award on May 13, 2008 from the Friends of the National Library of Medicine for his work with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In 1989 Randy helps start the Country Cares for St. Jude Kids program after he meets St. Jude research charity founder, comedian-actor Danny Thomas. This is one of America's most successful radio fundraising events with $315 million in pledges for the hospital.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What is Chuck Berry's only #1 tune? The answer that lies below is surprising.

SOUTHWEST
SALT LAKE CITY, UT - Scott Sutherland VP/Market Manager Bonneville Seattle radio zooms back to Phoenix, AZ to assume Erik Hellum's Bonneville-Phoenix radio VP/Market Manager position.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Veteran CBS Radio & CBS TV news announcer Charles Osgood receives NAB's annual Distinguished Service Award at the April 2008 NAB show. Charles anchors CBS Radio's The Osgood File & CBS-TV News Sunday Morning.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - Bonneville is in the news again as it sells Christian Contemporary KUTR-820 Taylorsville (a Salt Lake City suburb) to Jennifer Epperson.

TENNESSEE
NASHVILLE, TN - Former Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr performs at Gaylord's Wildhorse Saloon on July 6, 2008. Someone says All things must change. The Wildhorse is a honky-tonk style nightclub in downtown Nashville's Second Avenue tourist district. Wildhorse owner Gaylord decides that diversity is the name of the game. So roll out the red carpet for R&B legend Gladys Knight on August 5th, Reggae group UB40 on August 18th & Rock band Hootie & The Blowfish on July 16th. Wildhorse's evolution is Sunday morning fodder in the Tennessean: The Wildhorse ditches its all-Country image. Ticket prices for Ringo's show are yet available.

MID-AMERICA
MANITOWOC, WI - According to the Sheboygan Press, Bill Walters former Wisconsin radio personality dies at 84 on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at North Ridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc. After high school in 1948, William W. Zummach attends the Conservatory of Music and takes radio courses. He begins a part time radio career at WMLO AM Milwaukee. Later a morning show on WMAM-570 Marinette. In 1950, WDUZ-1400 Green Bay. In 1963, WCUB-980 Manitowoc for 29 years until he retires in 1992. To get back behind the mic he takes a part-time job on WKTT Two Rivers, WI and reports farm news.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In fall 1972 My Ding-A-Ling is Chuck Berry's only #1 single and also his only single to sell at least 500,000 copies. Yes, it surprises me, too. As Program Director/Music Director & morning drive DJ on KBER FM-AM on my 2nd tour of radio duty in San Antonio, TX I add Berry's My Ding-A-Ling to the playlist. Instantly, the phone lines lite up like a Christmas tree. Dave Bartholomew (Fats Domino's sidekick) records the original version of the song in 1952 on King records. The Bees release the record as Toy Bell on Imperial in 1954. The Average White Band backs Chuck Berry on his first release of the tune in 1966 but he calls it My Tambourine. In the 1st part of 1975, while Music Director & DJ on KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX I add AWB's great tune Pick Up the Pieces to the playlist. It becomes AWB's 1st chart tune and leaps to #1. Those were the days, my friend.

FATS DOMINO (1928-present)
A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B.
