SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport,LA) Hello Jim, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Thanks for keeping us old guys in touch with each other and with each other’s perceived realities. You’re doing a tremendous service for many of us. That being said, I read with interest your readers comments on how radio has degraded over the past 20 to 30 years. How its become little more than a cash cow for those with enough money to increase their fortunes, and to do so without regard to the real people who made radio in the first place, or the people trying to make it now. Your readers are right! Case in point. A Radio Group out of NYC, I'm told, walked into their Shreveport, LA group and fired more than 10 people without notice. A tremendous talent pool now trying to work in a depressed industry. Reason? Cut monthly expenses by some $15,000. Here's another group that appears to program local radio stations in absentia, without regard to local culture or their local employees who have families and mortgages. Regardless, the old crowd that made radio might consider a cessation of verbal hostilities toward today’s ownership groups, pool old timer's resources, form their own radio group, then try to return radio to the entertainment and information media of it’s heritage. Sure we're older now, but so what! You’re only as old as you feel, and if you don’t feel old, well… I'd wager to say there are hundreds of older guys who would literally jump at the chance (or at least jump start their wheel chairs) to return to radio, even out of retirement, to return radio to what they think it should be. Music, News, and Public Affairs (Entertainment and Information). Instead of complaining so much, maybe the complainers could put their money where their mouths are and fix the problem, or, realize you might not be able to go back. If you can’t go back, then teach the younger generation of broadcaster how it could, and in some cases, should be done. Its sad to say, many of us who opted out of lengthy radio careers, because of the many changes, realize too, that radio isn’t the only place where expectations are not met. Maybe we should take a long hard look at ourselves, remember from whence we came, then visualize where we’re headed at break neck speed. It’s a direction and mindset where few agree is the best place to go. Thanks for the space JR; I just had to get that off my chest. Oh, and another thing… I still haven’t heard a peep out of anyone who knows whatever became of KLIF News hounds Bruce Hughes, Bob Richmond or Sam Lee.

RICK HEROLD (DFW-Grand Prairie, TX) rherold@gptx.org Hi JIm, asking a question for a second time. You put a request a year or so ago, about me trying to find my old boss and friend Bruce Hughes. We worked together at KNUS-FM in Dallas. I had lost touch with Bruce about 10 years ago and I was wondering if anyone might have any updates on the legendary newscaster! Thanks, Rick Herold, Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Grand Prairie, TX

BEN LAURIE (Dallas, TX)
Extra Tickets: Who wants to go with me? I have four extra tickets for the Robbie Knievel event at Texas Motor Speedway, center area, next weekend if anybody wants them. He's going to attempt to jump 500 liberals with a bulldozer. It should be a very enjoyable show!

BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hey jim, I got a forwarded e-mail that led back to Stan Webb. I contacted him and gave him the address to JRRR. He told me it was coincidental that he had just returned from the S.A. Radio Luncheon, where he says he had a nice visit with Bruce Hathaway and Don Couser. I hope he contacts you. He was GM at KITY back in the early 70's. Bob

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Subject: Need another email address/number. yeah...Ron (Selden) was pleased and passed on his thanks and regards...we've been bouncing emails back and forth the past few days. Always good to hear from old friends...Houston radio was fun all around.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) But faith can fuel the fire of hope even when the embers of poverty are down to ashes. Believe me, there are many of us in this deteriorating business who are living testimonials. Have you heard Ron Chapman filling in for Paul Harvey? He has done a good job. Gary (
www.garydnews.com/)

PAUL LONG (Detroit-Brighton, MI) Jim, It’s great to hear one of the original Charlie and Harrigan’s still broadcasting and nationwide at that (Ron Chapman subbing for Paul Harvey). He still has the voice! Does anyone know how to get in touch with him? Since I found out a couple of years ago about my father’s (Joe Long) induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Ron’s acceptance for him, I have been trying to track him down. While we’re at it, where is Wes Wise these days? Paul Long (www.paul-long.com)

COLONEL ST. JAMES (Houston, TX) Hey Jim, Sorry this took so long, but a heartfelt congratulations to you and Tejas over the Cashbox gig! I can't think of anybody who deserves it more. Give her a pet from me. All the best! Aloha, Colonel St. James (www.colonelstjames.com) Listen 7pm til 12Mid CT online at www.kkrw.com

DAN GALLO (Houston, TX) Jim, Congratulations on hooking up with Cash Box! It’s not like you needed something to keep you busy, but, now we can all rest assured that you’ll be doing something constructive with your time. Have a ball with it, my man! Dan Gallo, Country Legends 97.1 & 107-5 K-HITS (www.dangalloproductions.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Faith Hill's birth name is Audrey Faith Perry but she still uses the last name of her first husband of 7 years Daniel Hill. Of course Country superstar Tim McGraw is her current husband. Together they sell out concerts all across the good ole USA.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA)
Jim, I just returned from an unexpected trip. I'm delighted to read the business about you and Cash Box. I'll check out the column. While I was gone I had the opportunity to read t(o) 100 people who are screwing up America. I highly reccomend it. Some of our favorite hypocrites are there. In the mean time I hope you can pick up a few $ with Cash Box. Again congratulations. CC

ARISTOTLE (384 BC-322 BC) We are what we repeatedly do.
