ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HAPPY SAN JACINTO DAY!

WEST COAST
SEATTLE, WA - Starbucks gives away more music. Customers download one free tune each week from Apple Inc.'s iTunes store. Remember in 2007 when the coffee giant whose base is in Seattle teams up with the Apple computer company in Cupertino, CA and hands out 6 million songs for free? Heavens to Betsy! What's going on? CD sales are in a huge slump but that free giveaway puts a whole new spin on things. This 2008 promotion can mean at least 1.5 million free downloads each week. And these are not back of the aisle artists either. They include the likes of Carly Simon, Counting Crows, Duffy, and other well-known artists. In fact, Counting Crows' Washington Square kicks off the gala on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What is C.W. McCall's CB handle in his tune Convoy? The answer lies below.

SOUTHWEST
LAS VEGAS, NV - The Broadcasters' Foundation changes its name to the Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Awards in honor of legendary Chicago broadcaster Ward Quaal who is a member of the board of the Broadcast Pioneers. Six fellow broadcasters receive Quaal Pioneer Awards at the annual awards breakfast on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in Las Vegas. And the winners are: Larry Benson (Midcontinent Media Chairman/CEO), Ed Christian (Saga Communications President/Chairman/CEO), Robert (Doc) Fuller (Bob Fuller Broadcasting President/CEO), Stanley Hubbard (Hubbard Broadcasting President/Chairman/CEO), Bruce (Cousin Brucie) Morrow (NYC radio personality) and Thomas Oakley (QNI Broadcast Group President/CEO).

MARICOPA, AZ - Scott Burton, owner/GM of KSTM Phoenix, AZ passes away on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 after an engagement with cancer reaches its plateau. We fondly remember Scott at KFRC-610 and KNBR-680, San Francisco; WWDC-1260, Washington, DC; WHK-1420, Cleveland, OH; WDGY-1130, Minneapolis, MN; KSD-550, St. Louis, MO; KFMB-760, San Diego, CA; KVI-570, Seattle, WA and KTAR-620, Phoenix, AZ. A private memorial service is April 5th at the Province Town Hall in Maricopa, AZ.

LAS VEGAS, NV - David Rehr, NAB President/CEO, reports in his opening address at the NAB Show on Monday, April 14, 2008 that, despite the perceptions of some, radio remains relevant. In his keynote speech, radical actor Tim Robbins knocks radio and everything that he considers not green. Of course, Tim does favor good ole greenback dollars.

EAST COAST
GLOUCESTER, MA - Movie star Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James are involved in a head-on collision on Friday night, April 18, 2008 with an inebriated driver on East Main Street in the quiet seaside town of Gloucester. Thank God no one receives injuries but both autos are so mangled they hitch rides behind tow trucks to leave the scene of the accident. Local gendarme report the 64 year old Gloucester female driver's blood alcohol content at .20 which is more than twice the legal limit. A bystander claims they hear the phrase Book 'em Dano. Sandra is on location in the Gloucester area to film her new romantic comedy, The Proposal. The 43 year old Bullock is well-known by cinema fans in films like Speed, Miss Congeniality and While You Were Sleeping. Sandra's husband Jesse James is TV's notorious builder of custom motorcycles for the rich and famous which makes him rich and famous, too.

MID-AMERICA

CHUCK MATTHEWS (Toledo-Perrysburg, OH) Hi Jim! Great to hear from you. And thank you for the mention. Yup, that's the correct email. I would love to receive your newsletter. Thanks, Chuck Matthews Productions, radio-tv-film-narration-voicetrack (www.chuckmatthewsvoice.com)

RUDY OWEN (Dallas, TX) During the 60's and 70's I recorded several records and in the course of promoting them, got to meet and know several disc jockeys in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Because of this, I am interested in radio and radio personalities. So, in the process of trying to locate some of the guys, I came across your web site and thus your e-mail address. It is very informative and I enjoy reading the reports. Some guys I have known are Jim Spann, Gene Price, and Ron Beach from KSEL Lubbock in the 60's, Danny Mc Curdy from Abilene and Dallas, and even though I didn't know them well, Joe Ladd, Arch Yancey, Tom Christopher, and Dick Martin. I've just been interested in Russ because he was so helpful to me. Thanks, Rudy Owen

SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport, LA) Jim, you know, a channel on one of the satellites would be no where near as costly, and old guys with studios in their homes like myself open up possiblities for syndication. Up links are now just an internet away. There is an entire democraphic not being served by contemporary radio. How fun would it be to bring back BOSS radio or Dallas radio with some of those of us left and do it on a satellite channel. I produced a couple of radio packages in years gone by, one called "Whatever Became Of..." highlighting the who's who of Hollywood from years gone by. The other program was "Leading The Way" which highlighted all the folks who made the 20th century what it was, as it focused on Shreveport and Bossier City. Both program's sponsorships were always sold out. Listener response on both was always top drawer. Perhaps a similar line "The Way It Was" or "The Best Was Then" or "Bringin Back Radio at it Best" or whatever, could be delivered via satellite to small independent FM stations struggling for programming. Commercial content on these would work the same way as any other syndicated program. Performers wouldn't make much, but think of the fun they could have in what are supposed to be our golden years. MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: 2008 Radio Hall of Fame Nominees. A belated congratulations on your new job as a writer for Cash Box Magazine. I appreciate that every Monday you send me a link to both that and your regular newsletter. Both are very enjoyable to read! I'm excited at the list of nominees for the 2008 Radio Hall of Fame. That's because former WLW afternoon host's Gary Burbank's name is on it. I forwarded your email to the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Kiesewetter. He's their entertainment reporter. Hopefully he'll include that info in one of his newspaper stories so lots of Gary's fans in Cincinnati, like me, can cast votes for him to try to get him in. Although Gary's now retired as a WLW host, his character Earl Pitts will still be making visits on that station from time-to-time. Thanks! Mary Lynn Knochelman Cincinnati, Ohio

ROD TANNER (Houston, TX) Hey Jim, I saw where someone had written in about if anyone knew if Paxton Mills was still on the air anywhere. Unfortunatley Paxton passed away a number of years ago. I got to know Paxton years ago when we were both in Denver. A good guy and a great jock. Rod Tanner

DAVE LANE (Atlanta, GA) right after my close brush with Vietnam and as a little radio career got started, I took a part-time job at a small local airport (shining aluminum airplane wings) and my pay was FLYING LESSONS. had a ball, but couln't get a license because of the blind eye. I've always loved flying ... as long as the plane didn't have any guns on it. Also always enjoyed telling of my days as an army ranger then telling them it lasted a few weeks. I've got to invent some war stories, too. After my ranger days (1959) I found out...years later...about the secret rangers that were on the ground in Vietnam, as "advisors"...BULL! And I thought Ike was a 'peaceful' general. Dave Lane (

TRIVIA ANSWER: In early 1976, C.W. McCall's smash #1 hit tune Convoy creates a CB craze. Rubber Duck is his CB handle. Remember when we broadcasters spell doom and gloom for terrestrial radio in the mid 1970s because it seems everyone listens to and talks on their CB radios and forsakes broadcast radio as we know and love it? Then CB radios fade away like Hula-Hoops and Edsels. Remember television comes on the scene in the early 1950s and spells doom for radio? And than along comes Top 40 music radio to whet our appetites. Terrestrial radio finds itself in yet another similar situation but as we have in the past we shall overcome!

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884-1962) Friends, you and me... you brought another friend... and then there were three... we started our group... our circle of friends... and like that circle... there is no beginning or end.
