ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
SOUTHWEST
LAS VEGAS, NV - During the NAB convention from April 11-17, 2008 in Las Vegas, 50 radio stations compete for the annual NAB Crystal Radio Awards that recognize radio stations' community service efforts. The winners of the Crystal Award reach the surface at the Radio Luncheon on April 15th. WAWZ FM (Star 99.1) Zarephath, NJ joins 10 other radio stations for the award. A panel of judges who represent broadcasting, community service organizations and public relations firms choose the winners. The Crystal Radio Award contest originates in 1987. Also on April 15th, Super radio DJ Larry Lujack inducts into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Who inspires the Rolling Stones song Angie? The answer appears below.
SOUTHEAST
NASHVILLE, TN - Country music superstar Toby Keith's new film Beer for My Horses shoots scenes in Nevada and New Mexico. Toby presents singers who are cast members Ted Nugent, Rodney Carrington, Mel Tillis and Mac Davis custom-built Takamine acoustic guitars with the movie's logo. Special-editions of these guitars also go to the film's actors Greg Serano, Brit Morgan, Barry Corbin, Gina Gershon, Claire Forlani and Tom Skerritt. Toby Keith's summer tour kicks off in June 2008 with Carter's Chord, Mica Roberts and Trailer Choir who are on his Show Dog Nashville label.
EAST COAST
PHILADELPHIA - Big Ron O'Brien PM Drive DJ on CBS Radio Classic Hits WOGL FM (#1 for Motown, Soul, & Rock n' Roll 98.1) Philadelphia dies of pneumonia much too young at 56. Big Ron is off the air because of his illness since the last of March 2008. During his radio career O'Brien is a DJ on KUDL Kansas City; KTLK-1280 Denver; WQXI-790 Atlanta; WCFL-1000 Chicago; WFIL-560 Philladelphia and KFI-640 & KIIS FM (102.7) Los Angeles. In 2002 he comes back to Philly on WOGL. Anne Gress, PD of WOGL, mentions her memories of Big Ron to the Philadelphia Inquirer, There was such joy in his voice. He was put on this earth [for] nothing other than to be on the air. Many of us radio folks vigorously agree with that statement.
HARRISBURG, PA - Rob Roy exits his Market Manager post at Clear Channel's Harrisburg cluster. CC consolidates market management of both Allentown and Harrisburg clusters under Allentown's Richard Lewis.
MILFORD, PA - The WQCD call letters from 101.9 in NY move to Milford, PA as Charles Williamson's WQCD-1450. WQCD FM in NY becomes WRXP FM (RXP New York's Rock Experience).
FCC ACTIONS
WASHINGTON - The NAB opposes the FCC's proposed changes to its localism rules when they say that stations already recognize and embrace their obligation to serve the public interest. A group of small broadcasters tell the FCC that its localism proposals are unnecessary and contrary to the public interest and disproportionately burdens small operators.

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, Just wanted to let you know that I have left radio---again. I was finally talked into resuming my post as Executive Director of Fathers For Equal Rights in Houston. I held this position for several years before I had to leave for cancer treatments. When I surprised even the doctors by living, the organization started trying to get me to come back. About a month ago I decided to do it. I will also be resuming the "Family Law" radio program on KSEV--Something I did when I was here before. So I guess I'm not really leaving radio. For the record, we help both men and women with all family law problems, making it affordable due to the attorneys that volunteer their services. I and the organization have been featured on Channel 13, Houston, on the 6PM & 10PM news by Jessica Willey & Dave Ward, in the "Legal News" magazine and several Houston radio stations. We help people. If any of the readers need our help, I can be reached at 713-226-8485 or by my return email address
barrykilgore@hotmail.com All the best & keep up the good work. Your site looks great! BarryPAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Jim, We had another "Old-Timers" lunch last Friday at The Lexington. This was our largest turnout ever. I know I’ll leave somebody out but, here are the ones I remember: Paul Berlin (KNUZ Hall of Famer), Arch Yancey (KNUZ Hall of Famer). Dave Ward (former KNUZ newsman and Ch. 13 anchor), Jerry Mueller-Miller (Former KNUZ jock), Jim Carrola (former KILT news Director), R.B McIntyre (KILT NEWS), Art Casper (former voice of Houston Basketball Cougars), Gene Arnold (KODA),"Buffalo" Bill Bailey (KIKK/KENR Hall of Famer), Ron Franklin (former Sports Director at KHOU TV), Steve Smith (former anchor at KHOU TV), Dan Lovett (KILT and ABC N.Y. Hall of Famer), Jim Debriun (former KNUZ newsman), Paul Orsak (former Sports Director at KPRC TV) and me (Paul Williams..the former "Wild Child at KNUZ). Fun was had by everyone..Yancey reminded us of how much FUN radio used to be and told a few good stories I can’t repeat. Berlin also joined in with some "classic" tales of the days of radio gone by. I will let you know when the next gathering will be and where and hope you can make it. I think most people there read your column daily. Later, Paul
MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) I know it's this week's Monday news because it matches the newsletter you sent me for today. But at the top of your article in the magazine it says Monday April 21st, instead of Monday, April 28. That originally confused me thinking it was last week's news, but when I checked it again it is indeed this week's article you wrote and the outer cover of the magazine says April 28th. Please make Cashbox aware of their typo, so it doesn't happen again next week. That's great that you finally have a weekly job for all the radio news you give to us for free. Mary Lynn Knochelman, Cincinnati, Ohio
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hey jim, I hit the jackpot at the Friends of the Arlington Public Library Booksale. I got a copy of 'Ring A Ding Ding by Frank Sinatra, just cause I thought the cover was cute. Turns out the record is virgin vinyl, not a snap crackle or pop. And it was an original issue of Frank's first album for Reprise, the label he founded. I also got an album called Frummox, from 1969, with Steven Fromhotz. Likewise, virgin vinyl with nary a rice crispie sound. I got to know Steve a little in Austin, and had heard him reference his long lost album. It's mine now. 50 cents each. Can't beat it with a stick. Bob
JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Bobby Langham...remember Bobby's letters would always include a list of who to call for gigs, what p.d. was hiring, etc. I met him several times at various events, invited him backstage at many of the old KLDE Fun Fest's...loved it. Bobby was like a celebrity to all the jocks. By the way, I want to pass the word about our good friend, Jay West. Jay is in the Long Term Accute Care Facility on Westview and the Beltway. He had a portion of his intestine removed, coupled with a laundry list of ugly problems. He is doing heavy duty rehab to bring some sort of normalcy back to his existence. He gets to go home when he can get around, unassisted, with a walker. He IS allowed visitors (Room 218). Direct link to his room is 713-932-2818. I'm sure he would love to hear from friends.
TRIVIA ANSWER: David Bowie's wife at the time, Angie Bowie, is the inspiration for the Rolling Stones hit record Angie. The tune rises to #1 in winter 1973. That's just before I become a DJ on Ft. Worth, TX's legendary Top 40 radio station KFJZ-1270. What a fantastic radio station of which to be a part!
LETICIA DOROFEEV [Manager-Country Wood Apartments] (Houston, TX) Mr. Rose, Congrats! And thank you...you and TEJAS have a Wonderful Week as well.
WAYNE WARNER (Springfield, MO) Congratulations, Jim. I agree with the others who are writing. You are deserving of this honor and a salary. Wayne Warner (not the singer)
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Way to go, Jimbo! Glad to see something positive happen for ya. Tell them you'll need a company car! Take care...Mike Shannon, Dallas, TX
DR. CHARLES PAYNE (Dallas, TX) Subject: A Great Day! It was April 7 (a few years ago) that my mother delivered me. She said I was 2 weeks early..and "I've been in a hurry ever since" She ought to know...right? Planning now a July trek to Europe and all the places I served in WW2. Taking my 2 sons with me to "Battle of the Bulge" area in Belgium...on into Germany, Austria, France and back. Wish us luck. CPBIGD
