If we remember a couple of years ago, that's the original spot on the dial for the legendary Country powerhouse KVOO-1170 until the format and call letter swap. To make room for Pat, KFAQ's Chris Medlock moves it on over to the 2-4 pm slot.
GULF COAST
HOUSTON, TX - Gonzo who is former APD/MD/night DJ on Wilks License Company Top 40 KMXV FM (Mix 93.3) Kansas City, MO is now on CBS Radio Top 40 KHJZ FM (Hot 95.7). KHJZ is the former legendary Country KIKK FM here in the Bayou City which switches to Soft Jazz in the 1990s as KHJZ and now it flips to mainstream Top 40 as KKHH FM. Please make up your minds. For decades as KIKK FM, it is a legendary Country radio station until radio consolidation begins its merry-go-round of constant changes.

RICK UPTON (San Antonio, TX) Jim: I am leaving Fox TV in San Antonio to take the position of General Sales Manager at JACK FM in San Antonio. I have to say that the people at the San Antonio Sinclair Broadcast offices have been an absolute pleasure to work with over the past 5 years. The most efficient and professional staff I have ever have ever been privileged to work. I am incredibly excited to be moving to cross town, Border Media owned Jack FM and working with a company that is hiring only the finest professionals and is poised to win and grow. Rick Upton, Director of New Business Development, Fox 29/MY 35 San Antonio
KTSA-550 in San Antonio, TX is sister station to the original CHR KTFM FM (102.7). Remember quite well when KTFM FM first goes on the air nearly 40 years ago. In December 2003, Infinity Broadcasting switches KTFM's calls to KSRX FM (K-Rock 102.7). On January 4, 2006, CBS Radio changes 102.7's logo to Jack FM. On January 11, 2006, CBS Radio flips the calls to KJXK FM (Jack FM 102.7). In May 2006, CBS Radio sells many of its radio stations. In August 2006, Border Media says it wants to buy KJXK FM (Jack FM 102.7). In June 2007, Border Media closes on the KJXK FM (Jack FM 102.7) deal. So the San Antonio 102.7 FM radio frequency has quite a bit of history behind it. Jack FM is a Variety format. Big Sticks Broadcasting Corporation of NY register the Jack-FM and Playing What We Want logos. To keep from having to pay Big Sticks' licensing fees some radio stations come up with other names than Jack-FM, such as Bob, Kim, Charlie, etc. The list is almost endless. To glance at the list of the Jack FM radio stations, plus the ones who drop the format, click: www.VarietyHits.com/variety/markets/index.html.
RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#497-32) April 30, 2008 [Wednesday] hi JIm: Well Jim, it's not too surprising to see the NAB's stance on Localism. Not About Broadcasting has just been a real estate realtor's organization for 12 years now anyways. Funny how those station licenses that hang on the wall state what city it's licensed to and SERVE. A note to Bob Crowley, My Aunt was Sinatra's secretary during the Reprise label days and she by a sheer quirk of fate helped Sonny and Cher secure an audition there and contract. Best always Jim, Ray
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) WBAP has a new news anchor. Bob Leonard has been with us in a part time capacity for the past few months. He has now been made fulltime afternoon drive anchor. Bob is a pro, with a spectacular track record. He was with the morning team on WYSP-FM Philadelphia back in the '70's that peaked at a 32 share-12+. He also worked with WLS in Chicago, and spent 24 years with the Satellite Music Network, now known as ABC Networks. Bob's a cool head, a 'Nam vet and a skilled broadcaster. He's a good addition to the staff. Bob
BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, In answer to a question in Monday's newsletter, yes, that is the Ron Chapman formerly of KVIL and KLUV in Dallas-Fort Worth substituting for Paul Harvey. Harvey has been out for surgery and is supposed to return to the air in mid-April. Ron's broadcasts originate from the ABC/Citadel building in Dallas. Bud
MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) No. You and I will not get credit for this news. As you just said, John Kieswetter will use the news revelation as his own. If I had not told him, I know Gary Burbank will tell him himself this week. I'm happy though that I pushed John to make sure the story does make it into the Enquirer. And maybe Gary will only tell him about being a HOF candidate, but not that his fans and co-workers can vote for him. So it's still good that you and I told him the news early! Mary Lynn Knochelman, Cincinnati, Ohio
CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Sometimes, I dig up news items that have incorrect data. So I search and search to find out the truth. In this latest case with the Cincinnati Enquirer we do tend to keep the newspapers on their toes, don't we? They have to find out news about their own local celebrities by way of JRRR which is way down south here in Texas.
DERRILL HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#497-43) April 30, 2008 [Wednesday] Jim, Paul Williams' update from the Old Timers' luncheon made me smile. Good to know that some of the camaraderie from the past survives. The folks recognized in Williams' letter will always be "All Aces" to me.TV and radio folks in Houston always had true affection for each other and got to know the names, faces and voices not out of rivalry, but out of true admiration. Joe Ford's mention of Bobby Langham also brought back fond memories. He listened like 24/7 and a person really wasn't in the market until he got his first fan letter from Bobby. (5x7 blue-lined white paper, in penciled cursive script). He knew someone had jumped stations even before it was mentioned in the Houston Post radio column. Speaking of stories: I was recently asked for a voice work demo, but lost the gig with an agency that prefers to work with union talent. I was a member of AFTRA way back in the early 1970's when I worked Pittsburgh. Well, after a few calls between DC and Pittsburgh, an AFTRA administrative assistant was able to locate a file on me at AFTRA-SAG HQ in NYC. Seems my membership had lapsed in May, 1977 when I went to Sonderling Broadcasting's KIKK (Egmont loved talented voices but had no use for unions in Texas). I'm reactivating my AFTRA-SAG membership for bi-annual base dues from the second half of 1977 and the second half of 2008. Would you believe that's about equal the talent fee for a single tag at today's rates. Hang in their Jim-- and write on! Derrill Holly-Arlington, Va.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Remember Derek and the Dominoes's Layla which hits #51 on the Top 40 chart in spring 1971? That is the short version (2:43). The album cut which is 7:10 long crashes the Top 40 chart at #10 in fall 1972. Then Layla returns as a live Eric Clapton acoustic version in winter 1992.
DAVID PERKINS (DFW, TX) To all my friends, family and neighbors. I want to remind you that I will be preaching on the radio (KKGM-1630 in Dallas/Fort Worth) Sunday afternoon at 12:30 pm Central Time.
