ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SOUTHEAST
NASHVILLE, TN - Jim Hager, a member of Country singer duo The Hagers, dies at 62 of an apparent heart attack on Thursday afternoon, May 1, 2008. Doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN verify his death. The identical twin brothers Jim and John come to life on August 30, 1946 in Chicago, IL. Following their Army stint, the Hagers head out west to Los Angeles where they become performers at Disneyland theme park. That's where Buck Owens finds and signs them to a management contract. The Hagers open Buck's shows for years and that leads them to become cast member regulars on TV's Hee Haw. The clean-cut boyish charm of Jim and his twin brother John turn the duo into celebrities on Hee Haw. In 1969, The Hagers sign with Capitol Records. Five of their singles land on the Billboard Country chart. We remember when Hee Haw first hits our TV screens in 1969. At first some say the show's name pokes fun at us Country music fans but after its debut everyone jumps for joy for Country music's version of TV's Laugh In with hosts Rowan and Martin. Hee Haw's hosts are Buck Owens and Roy Clark. Hee Haw remains in syndication all across America the land we love. In 1988, after 20 years on Hee Haw, The Hagers leave the show.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) I want thank you again for sending to me the news for the candidates for the National Radio Hall of Fame. I also today got an email from John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer. It seems that you and I let the cat out of the bag. The HOF Candidate Gary Burbank will be visiting Cincinnati some time this week. He had told John that there was something he wanted to tell him when he arrives. John told me, "Now I know what, I'll track him (Gary) down and get something in". So while you are proud of telling Radio news that has happened, this time you and I are behind making a news story that WILL happen. It's so exciting knowing that a Cincinnati reporter LISTENS to me and agrees there is NEWS when I think it's NEWS. I've done it a couple of times before, both dealing with Enquirer Reporter John Erardi and Cincinnati Reds news. But I'm dealing with another reporter named John, and this will be the first entertainment story I'll have my hand in. I won't get any recognition, but it's still satisfying knowing that I am still using my B.S. Degree in Communication Arts Degree (82 Xavier University) when I cause (this time with your help) a news story to happen! If Gary Burbank should succeed in making it into the Radio HOF this year, he'll be the second popular broadcaster from Cincinnati to be inducted. Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman was inducted in 2005. Once the article is written, I'll forward it to you. Thanks So Much!!! Mary Lynn Knochelman, Cincinnati,Ohio

RICK UPTON (San Antonio, TX) I actually Programmed and did middays on KTFM in the mid 90's for 2 years where we were the Highest rated top 40/CHR or Urban dance station in the top 50 markets. Rick Upton, Director of New Business Development, Fox 29/MY 35 San Antonio

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#497-42) April 30, 2008 [Wednesday] Bobby even tracked me down to the Cable gig I have in sales! That is simply AMAZING! Sorry to hear about his Mom, truly.

ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Subject: Bobby Langham. Sorry to hear that. Do you know if anyone has his mailing address?

FIRST TIME that I ever see Bobby Langham is on a KNUZ-1230 remote broadcast at a large shopping center in the summer of 1978. The remote unit is parallel to the shopping center with the buildings on the left and the parking area on the right. Happen to look up and see a tall guy way back toward the end of a parking lane. He seems like he is headed straight for the KNUZ unit. For some reason figure that may be our buddy Bobby Langham. When he gets to the remote unit it is Bobby live and in person! Let him inside to chat for awhile. After that, for the next nearly 20 years, he locates me on all of the other 11 Houston radio stations where I end up behind the mic. Listeners like Bobby Langham make it all worth while. When I start in radio in 1965 there are a lot of listeners who keep up with us. They bring birthday cakes and hugs and kisses. Of course, those are from female listeners. Those were the days, my friend.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Cracker Jack makes its debut at the first Chicago World's Fair in 1893. In 1912 the first prize appears inside each box. The boy's name on the front of a box of Cracker Jack is Sailor Jack and his doggie is Bingo. Frito Lay buys Cracker Jack from Borden in 1997. Cracker Jack doesn't come in a box anymore. It's now inside a paper package. Cracker Jack is an American favorite for over 100 years. Remember the tune Take Me Out to the Ball Game? The third line says Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack. Try to find peanuts inside the new Cracker Jack package.

DAVE LANE (Atlanta, GA)
I just got this from an old friend who has a grandson in Iraq...thought it was neat... IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS, PLEASE, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO STAND IN FRONT OF THEM. Dave Lane, Cashbox Radio Program Director, Visit Us At: Cashbox Country Countdown (

GLEN ASHWORTH (Lebanon, OR) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #495. I'm sorry; but OBAMA reminds me of what the Bible calls the Anti-Christ.

JENNIFER VIHARO (Atlantic City-Pittsgrove, NJ) Subject: Ronald Reagan. Yes, as a young actress, I got my first big lead on GE Theatre (taped) when Ronald Reagan was both moderator as well as the star in many shows. I was working with a lot of name performers in this particular episode - and so very young and nervous as the technique of acting on television is very specific whether it was live (Playhouse 90, Dupont Show of the Month, etc) In those days live television was just that. LIVE! You rehearsed for a week and then shot – If you made a mistake – the world saw it. But back to Ronald Reagan, from the moment I walked onto the set, he was waiting for me and became my mentor for that week of shooting. He watched over me like a chicken sitting on an egg and taught me all the technical essentials which were an enormous help later on. I think back on him and marvel at his goodness of spirit and humility. He did so much for me that surely he didn’t have to do – but he was just that type person. One thing I remember is that you never felt any arrogance or ego in him. He was always himself – just as he was as President. That is why so many mourned his death. Jennifer W. Viharo, VP Marketing & New Product Development, Embe Enterprises, Inc., Frogtown Records (

RONALD REAGAN (February 6, 1911-June 5, 2004) If we ever forget that we're One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.
