ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY!

GULF COAST
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Emmis sells its last TV station Fox affiliate WVUE-TV CH 8 for about $41 million to Louisiana Media Company whose owner is New Orleans Saints big cheese Tom Benson. That name is very familiar to me because when I arrive as PD/MD of KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio,TX in August 1968 my very first remote broadcast is at the brand new Tom Benson Chevrolet dealership.

MID-AMERICA
LANSING, MI - Tim Barron AM Drive DJ on Macdonald Broadcasting Hot AC WHZZ FM (Mike FM 101.7) leaves the building. Co-host Mike Holder takes the solo reins until Tim's replacement arrives on the scene.

ST. LOUIS, MO - John Matthews is the new Program Director of Clear Channel Classic Hits KLOU FM (My 103.3).

LEXINGTON, KY - Dale O'Brian moves it on over as Program Director and AM Drive DJ at LM Communications Hot AC WCDA FM (CD 106.3).

MACON-WARNER ROBINS, GA - Georgia Eagle Broadcasting WNNG-1350 switches from Pop Standards to Talk.

SOUTHEAST
ATLANTA, GA - According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle Time Warner severs its relationship with Time Warner Cable. Time Warner owns more than 80% of Time Warner Cable's shares. Jeffrey Bewkes, Time Warner CEO, says, We've decided that a complete structural separation of Time Warner Cable Inc., under the right circumstances, is in the best interests of both companies' shareholders. We're working hard on an agreement with Time Warner Cable, which we expect to finalize soon.

EAST COAST
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Federal Trade Commission approves the deal for Universal Music Group (UMG) to buy Univision Music Group (UMG). Universal is the largest Latin music company in North America, Confucius says this is mighty confusing because both companies have the same logo - UMG. But that clears up fast because the name Univision disappears. Universal Music Latin Entertainment becomes a division of Universal Music Latin America.

NEW YORK - On a cross-country series of radio presentations, Dan Mason, CBS Radio President/CEO, tells advertisers at the Nokia Theater on Monday, May 5, 2008, To say that an iPod or satellite radio, with little or no human connection, will ever replace radio is absurd, CBS Radio unveils its new Play.It media player. This new gimmick does not link into one single station but offers several radio stations at once, plus Internet-only operations.

WEST COAST
LOS ANGELES - Entravision's Regional Mexican KLYY FM (Oye 97.5) flips to Spanish Adult Hits Jose FM 97.5.

HOLLYWOOD, CA - On Sunday, April 20, 2008 Viacom, MGM and Lionsgate enter premium cable and VOD space. This new Viacom network causes talk of a possible conspiracy theory.

JIMMY RABBITT (Grand Junction, CO) Jim, Thanks for keeping us old announcers aware of the changing face of our industry. I'm glad that you and Tejas are dedicated to keeping us in touch with all our old friends and former enemies. I need your help in locating an e-dress for my old friend Gary Hamilton. (KLIF and The Satellite Music Network) He sent me an e-mail recently but his e-dress got erased. If anybody knows how to reach him, let me know. Thanks and keep up the good work...conejo

SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport, LA) Jim, Sorry, I have no idea what happened to Gene Dickerson after he left KRMD. But it seems as though he got away from radio to do something else. As you know, he was replaced by Smokey Hyde, who is now in high cotton from his cell phone business. I worked at KEEL in 1968 for Larry Ryan and then news director Dave McClelland (aka Dave Despain on Speed Channel). Billy Fuller is not a name I recognize. From KEEL I went to WTIX in New Orleans where Jim Swiler was News Director and Bob Walker was driving folks home in the afternoon. I was at Elkins in New Orleans during 1968 studying for my 1st Phone. Interesting story here. The woman who graded the tests was named Mrs. McDonald. She had a rep for being cold blooded. You would turn your test sheets in for grading then go stand at the back of the room. If you failed, she would announce to the class, MR HODGES, YOU FAILED!!!!!!! On the other hand if you passed, she would whisper "mr hodges, you passed." Thank goodness my announcement was the latter. We're now getting ready for church. I look foward to reading your daily pieces. Cheers, Scott Hodges, family and grand kids.

DAVE MICHAELS (San Diego, CA)
Jim: I agree with the statement made about George Cooper; he came into KONO and I was hired by Jim Dunlap, and I didn't know what to think; George turned out to be one the great people in Broadcasting I ever worked for. A true straight shooter and a gentleman. He loved those Corvettes! Quite a few years ago I went to Elkins (Dallas Branch) to get my 1st Class Radio telephone License. and I worked at the station downtown. I was wondering if anyone else remembered this - if you were a student at Elkins - Dallas; you could work at the station on the 6th floor of the Fidelity Life Bldg; KEIR-FM used to be KQRO-FM, and do a jock shift (MOR Format) and you get a pay check, but have to sign it, and give it back to Elkins as a "lab fee" for your schooling? I did this for my three months there. This was in the great days of Radio aka 1966. Does anyone else remember this deal? Dave Michaels - San Diego, Ca.

RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hey Jim: Have Woody Roberts and Lee "Baby" Sims tell from their perspective the day they abruptly Left KONO and went to work for KTSA and how Jack Roth got a court order barring them to do so. It made the news back then in 1966 (?) The SA NEWS (afternoon publication of the SA Express-News) had it as a banner headline. Ray

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#497-42) April 30, 2008 [Wednesday]. I have no idea where the next generation of great jocks will come from. There's no training ground anymore and there's very little freedom to be anything but a liner reader, wow THAT'S entertainment! I'm just glad I have Sirius Sat. in the car.

BOB CROWLEY (Ft. Worth-Arlington, TX) The website is working for me now, and I think I missed three of the best columns ever. You linked up with Nick St. John! Yay! I was a huge fan of his when he was on KONO then KEXL then KTFM then KEXL again, where I finally got a chance to get to know him. I read about Ken Carter with a tear in my eye. What a talent! I wish I still had the photo of him in the doublebreasted pinstriped suit, holding the tommy-gun! Paul Kelly is also there, and he's someone who I'll always be indebted to. And I was in that Explorer Scout group at KBAT. I'm racking my brains to try to remember Danny Rosen. Once again, the website is beautiful, the participation is spectacular, and thank you for bringing us all together again. Bob Crowley

PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Did Bobby pass away? I just spoke with him not long ago. He said his mother was sick but, he didn’t mention anything about his health. I played many, many songs for him on KNUZ from 1960-65... Please let me know. Paul Williams, Senior Account Executive, Univision 713-965-2466

BOBBY LANGHAM is alive and well. He still keeps up with us radio DJs, call letters, phone numbers, PDs and any openings and changes that he runs across. Bobby is a Houston, TX radio encyclopedia.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX)
Jim, You can delete my
bud@unt.edu address now 'cause "school's out for summer" and I won't be back till fall. Your newsletter is in my favorites at the home address so I'll access it that way since my computer has problems trying to receive the letter from your computer. Oh technology! Have a good summer. Bud

DAVID PERKINS (DFW, TX) To all my friends, family and neighbors. I want to remind you that I will be preaching on the radio (KKGM-1630 in Dallas/Fort Worth) Sunday afternoon at 12:30 pm Central Time.
