EDDY ARNOLD R.I.P. (1918-2008)
Country and Pop music legend Eddy Arnold, who is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, dies at 89 on Thursday morning, May 8, 2008. Richard Edward Arnold is born on May 15, 1918 on a farm in Chester County, TN, about 20 miles south of Jackson. Eddy's dad dies when he is only 11. His family becomes poverty-stricken. During Eddy's teen years The Great Depression brings few job opportunities except the use of his voice as a singer. As a teenager Eddy begins his singing career on radio in Jackson. Arnold's first manager is Colonel Tom Parker who later becomes Elvis Presley's manager. In 1944, Eddy signs with RCA records. In December 1944, Arnold records four tunes in WSM's Studio B which is the first major-label recording session in Nashville, TN. He has 12 #1 hits in the 1940s and 9 #1 smash singles in the 1950s. In 1965 Eddy trades in the sound of the steel guitar for a string section and begins another long string of #1 tunes: What's He Doing in My World (#1-1965), Make The World Go Away (#1-1965), I Want To Go With You (#1-1966), Somebody Like Me (#1-1966), Lonely Again (#1-1967), Turn The World Around (#1-1967) and Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye (#1-1968). Eddy Arnold sells more than 85 million records. 37 of his singles land on the Pop charts. On Nov. 28, 1941, Arnold marries the former Sally Gayhart who precedes him in death on March 11, 2008. Eddy leaves behind their children Richard Edward Jr. of Nashville and Jo Ann Pollard of Brentwood, TN. This also includes two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

TRIVIA QUESTION: When does the first Video Tape Recorder (VTR) go on the market and how much does it cost? The answer appears below.

NORTHWEST
PORTLAND, OR - Anyone for a game of Radio Russian Roulette? KXJM FM Rose City Radio switches from Rhythmic Jammin' 95.5 to Sports-Talk 95.5 The Game and lassos John Canzano away from RCR sister station News-Talk KXL-750. On Friday night May 9, 2008, CBS Radio snatches the Rhythmic beat and puts in on KVMX FM (Movin' 107.5) Portland-Banks, OR. Former KXJM Jammin' wake-up show PK's Playhouse crosses the street to KVMX. Current KVMX Movin' Program Director Lisa Adams handles the new Jammin' 107.5, Hits and Hip-Hop. On Monday, May 12, 2008 KXL reels in Premiere Radio Networks Glenn Beck syndicated show to fill Canzano's former 6-9pm (PT) spot.

WEST COAST
LOS ANGELES - On December 29, 2006, Radio One moves its Urban format to The New V-100, The Best Variety of R&B. In 2008, Bonneville buys KRBV FM (V100) and names Peter Burton VP/GM and Dave Beasing as Program Director. The KRBV website bids fairwell: Thank you for being a V100 loyal listener! We are sorry we had to go, but acknowledge and appreciate your support. In April, 2008,V100 switches to AAA The Sound. Long ago, the call letters are KFOX-FM which is the sister to Country KFOX-1280 in Long Beach, CA. Over the years there are several format switches and call letter changes. In 1973, as KIQQ FM (K100), KHJ heavyweights Bill Drake and Gene Chenault arrive to program and manage the frequency. The addition of former KHJ powerhouse DJs Robert W. Morgan and The Real Don Steele brings no success because of programming differences. And so it goes in our beloved radio.

SOUTHWEST

DAVE LANE (Atlanta, GA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. We've posted several old Eddy Arnold originals that may be downloaded by any radio stations needing some of these hard to find songs. The are posted on the Cashbox Magazine 'Radio' page. Also, we have heard some rumors floating about a Google/Cashbox deal of some sort. There is absolutely no truth to these rumors. I don't know where these rumors start but Google HAS NOT approached Cashbox with any offers and it's very unlikely that Cashbox would have any intentions of acquiring Google! I've seen lots of positive feed-back on Cashbox's inclusion of 'Jim Rose Remembers Radio'. Keep up the great work. Your article is a 'must read'. RON HAJEK (Austin, TX) Jim, Just read your article and it brought back many fond memories of what a good radio station KBUC was. I still miss it along with KBER after all these years. I [was] raised in New Braunfels. When it was still on the air (KBUC) I would make cassette recordings of the Sunday oldies afternoon program that Max Gardner hosted. I kept those cassettes in my pickup at the time and when it was stolen (the truck) I lost a bit of history. Do you know whatever happened to Max my guess is that he is deceased by now. If my memory serves me correct he was a dj at KBER before coming to KBUC. I now listen to Willie's Place on XM Radio and collect country and western lp's from the 50's 60's and some 70's. Are you still in radio? Best regards, Ron Hajek

GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim: I notice you hear from Mark Carrillo in San Antonio from time to time. I don't know if you know this or not but Mark is one of the most generous people in radio. Each year during the Jerry Lewis MD telethon Mark gives hundreds dollars to help those poor kids. He's truly one of the good guys in radio with a heart of gold! You are also one of the radio good guys Jimbo! Keep up all the good work you do! Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas

TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 14, 1956, Ampex demonstrates the first commercial Video Tape Recorder (VTR) at the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters Convention. The model VRX-1000 becomes the Mark IV which goes on sale for $50,000.

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Fort Worth, TX)
Dave Michaels asked about KEIR in Dallas. When I was at Elkins in 1968 the station had moved to the school offices and classrooms on Inwood Rd. I drove by there not too long ago and the building is still there. They had one studio with a Gates Yardboard I believe plus a smaller room for news. As I recall the station was 3 thousand watts but that's shaky memnory. It's now 100,000 KVTT and religious. Fr. Bob Tomlinson

DAVE MICHAELS (San Diego, CA) Back in 71 & 72 I was doing the 8-midnight show (CHR) on WTUE FM in Dayton, Ohio. We had just beat WING radio in all demos. Bill Struck the PD calls me at home about 9am in the morning, and says can you come in; we have to talk about something! I meet him in his office, he closes the door. Not a good sign! As I recall from other meetings with PD's...he tells me Don Kidwell ( GM) received a phone call from an angry father who says his daughter (Carol ) is calling our radio station from Chicago and racking up long distance charges of 40 & 50 dollars and he wants this stopped! I proceed to tell him about callers (on the request lines) one was a Carol from Centerville, Ohio and her girl friend. Seems Carol was visiting her friend in Dayton, and while she was there; was calling our station at night and now that she was back home in Chicago; she was still calling our station long distance. She was maybe 14 or 15 at the time. You know the drill; I mentioned their names on the air, and played their requests etc. Long story short, her Dad was hot over these phone bills from the Windy City. I was told to get rid of her if she called again, and NOT to encourage her in calling our station. She never called again. A week later while talking to Bill Struck, I asked him; who was the father that called from Chicago? He told me; some guy named Don Rumsfield! (Carol Rumsfield) The same Donald Rumsfield in the BUSH Adminstration. True Story. (Dave Michaels on the back roads of Ca)

DONALD RUMSFELD (born July 9, 1932) If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much.
