PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY IS THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2008.
ANOTHER MUSIC LEGEND DIES.
An extremely favorite singer of mine who has Pop and Country records on the charts for four decades (1950s-1980s) passes away at 79 on Monday, May 5, 2008. Jerry Wallace is born on December 15, 1928 in Guilford, MS but grows up in Glendale, AZ. Jerry is a singer with a unique voice and smooth style that captures generations of us music lovers hearts, minds, bodies and souls from our teen years to well into our adult lives. As a teen, can remember going around singing his 1950s Pop hits over and over because they are such wonderful melodies: How the Time Flies (#11-1958), Primrose Lane that sells over a half million copies (#8-1959) and There She Goes (#26-1961). Wallace's hits keep on coming in the 1960s with Shutters and Boards (#24-1962) and In the Misty Moonlight (#19-1964) and others. In the 1970s Jerry turns his efforts toward Country music and he wins again with timeless Classics such as: To Get To You (#12-1972) and his first #1 hit If You Leave Me Tonight I'll Cry in the summer of 1972. It is a big feature in an episode of TV's Night Gallery called The Tune in Dan's Cafe. In the 1970s Wallace continues his string of hit records: Do You Know What It's Like To Be Lonesome (#2-1973), Don't Give Up On Me (#3-1973) and My Wife's House (#9-1974). Jerry's chart tunes continue on into the 1980s.
TRIVIA QUESTION: The Beatles record 191 songs in what studio? The answer appears below.

WEST COAST
LOS ANGELES - U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Senator John McCain tells Salem Radio Network host Hugh Hewitt that the return of the Fairness Doctrine would destroy political discourse in America, whether it be liberal, conservative, or anything else. Senator McCain tells the talk show host that a return to the Fairness Doctrine would destroy the flow of information to the American people. It is testimony, frankly, to the influence of people like yourself that they're trying to cripple it. I will never let that happen. The FCC abandons the so-called Fairness Doctrine in the 1980s but some politicians want to bring it back. Do we not have enough damage done to America's radio stations by the 1996 Telcom Law that allows big corporations to take over our radio airwaves?

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim: I believe it was (Dave) Michaels who mentioned George "Super" Cooper. He was indeed a class act and while I waas still at KENS-TV I did morning sports on KONO with Coop. MIchaels also mentioned Jim Dunlap...perhaps not well known is the the fact he was married to KENS-TV anchor Lynn Russell and when she was hired by CNN he went to Atlanta with her but I think they later divorced and he may have developed cancer. A funny story...Lynn had Angie Dickinson-like legs and she walked through the newsroom with a runway model's sashay. One night, she was strolling the length of the newsroom which was lengthy. Dan Cook was at his old Royal typewriter and I noticed he was typing the story but as Lynn approached and then passed by, his head swiveled and he continued to type as he followed her with his eyes..looked up at me and grinned and shrugged his shoulders as if to say.."What gogerous gams". Lynn was hired by the late Ed Turner who was news director for Ted Turner at CNN. Ed and I were classmates at OU. I think it was for $80,000 which was big money in 1984. Gary D.
DR. BRUCE NELSON (Corpus Christi, TX) I won Readers Choice Best of the Best Disc Jockey. I just got back from Bourne Texas where I had a part in the western "Palo Pinto Gold" it features Mel Tillis, Roy Clark, Trent Willmon and Glynn Praesel. The picture is due out in June/July and is a family friendly western. Always wanted to do a movie so it was a fun week and interesting. 50 years on the air this year where did the time go??
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Well, it happened again. It's getting to be a regular thing. A caller wants to comment on a story he saw on Channel 5, the local NBC affiliate. They ask directory assistance for WBAP. They get the WBAP-AM news department number. They don't realize Channel 5 changed its call letters to KXAS-TV in 1974!
JOHN SEBASTIAN (Dallas, TX) Jim, Nice hearing from you! Yes, please do add me to your mailing list. And if you need any bio info on me or ratings stats from KPLX, let me know. Thanks for contacting me. John Sebastian, Dallas, TX, 214.954.0895, (cell) 214.789.5081
BEN LAURIE (Dallas, TX) Jim, I did finally get Wednesday's JRRR. Thank you for doubling the effort to get it to us. Sounds like another screwup from Comcast. Haven't heard much good about Comcast, but fortunately they're out of the Dallas Market now. I really enjoy the comments from the old Radioheads and the historical knowledge you share. Keep up the good work. Ben
ROD TANNER (Houston, TX) Hey Jim, haven't got the newsletter in a while and it may be that you didn't get my new email address. Now its rrodtanner@comcast.net Hope you are doing ok. I did travel over to San Antonio last week to the KONO reunion and had a great visit with Johnny Shannon, Steve Sellers, Mark Carillio, Roger Allen and lots of great ex KONO jocks. Rod Tanner
BOB EDWARDS (Houston, TX) Hey Jim, My new e-mail is bobparker01@comcast.net Since Houston Roadrunner went away...as far as I know...as houston.rr.com's extension changed to comcast.net. Hope this helps. I am still enjoying your JRRR, even though I don't respond much. It keeps me in the know. I hope you keep it up. I know many appreciate it! Bob Edwards, Cox Radio-Houston
COMCAST experiences problems with receiving JRRR for its clients. Not too long ago, all JRRR subscribers with Comcast email addresses bounce.
BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, I did receive both copies. The long time director of the WFAA television newscasts at 6 and 10 was Bob Ellis. He directed over 9,000 newscasts and his goal was 10,000. At #9,000 we had a party for him in Studio B. Unfortunately he had heart problems before that goal and he moved into the less hectic master control position. I can't remember what kind of car he drove but I don't remember a bus of any kind. He might have had a VW at one time. BB
MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) I guess this would fall into your radio movers and shakers category. Another occasional voice was needed to replace late Joe Nuxhall. 'May 7th, 2008 Mark Sheldon/MLB.com Kelch to fill in as Reds announcer. Longtime Triple-A Louisville voice Jim Kelch will do fill-in work on 14 Reds radio broadcasts this season.'
HARRY S. TRUMAN [33rd President of US] (1884-1972) It's a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it's a depression when you lose yours.
