ARMED FORCES DAY IS SATURDAY MAY 17TH

RECESSION OR DEPRESSION OR BOTH?
Rumors are afloat that we're in a recession. The price of milk goes up 40%, apple juice increases 43% and gasoline for our motorcars leaps as high as Superman can fly Robin fly. In 2007, Kroger's Chairman and CEO David Dillon receives $9.1 million which is 22% more than arrives in his pockets in 2006. On January 1, 2008 Americans on Social Security receive a whalloping 2.3% increase on monthly pay checks. That's not a recession. It's more like an overbalance.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What are the call letters of America's first commercial radio station? The answer appears below.

WEST COAST
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - CNET Networks along with its popular online technical information plus other sites are now under the CBS Corporation banner to the tune of a cool $1.8 billion. That's billion with a b. This is an all-cash deal at 44% above CNET's current market value. CNET's Board unanimously approves the deal which closes in Q3.

HOLLYWOOD, CA - Howard Townsend, longtime co-owner of Don Martin School of Broadcasting in Hollywood, dies at 89 of natural causes on February 13, 2008. Howard's broadcast alumni from his years of teaching incude a real radio walk of fame: Don Imus, Bob Eubanks, Tom Kennedy and The Real Don Steele.

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Hollywood Reporter reports that since April 24, 2008 the five major TV networks are down an average of 21% in the key adult 18-49 demographic in comparison with 2007.

MID-AMERICA
CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago Tribune loses its long time managing editor. George de Lama who leaves his managing editor post at the Tribune after 30 years calls it two lifetimes’ worth of adventures. The Tribune gave this immigrants’ kid from Uptown the world, literally, and I’ll be forever grateful. The paper sent me off on my first foreign assignment at 23 and let me roam far and wide, writing home to tell of what I saw along the way. I had two lifetimes’ worth of adventures, all from a privileged front-row seat to history. Hanke Gratteau, deputy managing editor for news, succeeds de Lama as managing editor.

EAST COAST
NEW YORK, NY - Larry King leaves his Larry King Live TV show? A CNN source says that Ryan Seacrest, who fills in for his friend Larry King, is in serious negotiations to take over Larry King Live permanently toward the end of 2008. Ryan already has his hands full as host of E! News, American Idol plus a radio show on KIIS FM. In April 2007, Larry King tells The NY Times that Seacrest is his first choice, He’s the classic generalist. Another CNN source differs there is no truth to this story. Maybe only the shadow knows.

GULF COAST
SHREVEPORT, LA - Todd Nixon former Program Director of ADX Communications Country WYCT FM (Cat Country 98.7) Pensacola, FL replaces Paul Orr as the new PD of Cumulus Country KRMD FM (101.1) Shreveport, LA. During this game of radio musical chairs Kevin King, former WYCT PD, fills in the programming shoes until a new PD comes aboard. Kevin arrives from his PD post at Cumulus Country WSM FM (95.5) Nashville, TN.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) In 1972 I got to see a country review come to Sulphur Springs, TX. It was headlined by 2 names that really stood out. One was Jerry Wallace. His voice was pure velvet. I had never heard a singer like that and he performed like it was Texas Stadium. He didn't hold a thing back. He was also an easy guy to like on stage. Unfortunatley, I did not meet him after the show. I was pre-occupied the other headliner who was my lifelong hero, David Akeman, known as Stringbean. Mr. Akeman was murdered about 2 months after that concert and I have yet to totally accept that anyone could do something like that to such a wonderful, kind man. Concerts today have all the pyro's, bells and whistles for a reason. They lack the talent of people like Jerry Wallace, who only needed a mic. RIP to one of the greats. Jeff Cunningham, DC; Kyle, TX (www.zoesplaceclinic.com)

RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX) Well i'm certainly disappointed in McCain for his stance on the Fairness Doctrine. Good grief, what is wrong with hearing and viewing both sides of a campaign,or civic issue openly, equally, and fair? Are they afraid an opposing viewpoint might actually be factual, and more compelling than their own stance? Stations had to seek out opposing viewpoints to editorials, or candidate appearances. It wasn't that difficult, just a nuisance to them to get off their butt, serve the community and do it. These over blown talk show hosts see it as a threat and censorship. Nothing more can be further from the truth. They will stay have their say, anywhere and anyway they want it, it would just be BALANCED is all with another point of view, and not hanging up on them,as often is the case. I used to work for Salem radio Network, and Hugh Hewitt wasn't exactly held in high esteem there for his "Rush implanted ego". On another note: Brent Clanton was let go by Dan Frischberg as GM of Bizradio Network last monday. Brent is a gentlemen and the best Boss I ever had in my 36 years in radio. He deserved better but Dan F. has taken Brent's ideas got his stations and disposed of him. Here is another guy who doesn't have a clue about radio, just ego. Brent needs a solid gig preferably in the Houston Market, he would be a valuable asset to any station or a large co. that needs a good PR guy. I have contact info, if one wishes to get in touch. Ray

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, Ellis might have had a bus. Now that you mention it I believe he did at one time. He was quite a character. I still tell my classes about a day in the control room when guests from Bob Gooding's church were present and Bob blew the old 10-12 (visitors present) code really bad! I won't put it in writing. Bob was a pilot and flew the control room like he was in the air. Great guy. We ate dinner almost every night when I was on the night shift. Most of the time it was at the Brass Rail downtown. Good food....good memories. By the way, Aaron, my IT friend showed me how to check my system for SPAM. It is called "BULK MAIL" on my computer. Whatever happened to consistency? It left with computers and the old keep it simple theory. Now it's let's see how much we can complicate things. BB

TOM ASWELL (Baton Rouge-Denham Springs, LA) Jim, you mentioned the death of Jim Lowe Jr. There was a Jim Lowe who did a song called The Green Door, which I know you remember. Is it the same Jim Lowe?

BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Jim, It was David Foster I was thinking of who worked with me at KITY. He went over to KKYX in the winter of 74-75 when Howard Edwards moved over to KITY. Bob

MIKE SHUPING (Dallas-Carrollton, TX) hey Jim, Went by Wheatland a few years back with my 35 y-o son. Was week before school started. It's now a private school, meet the principal-owner. She bought it from Wheatland Meth. Church, they kept most of that big playground. The 2 brick buildings and one of the two class small buildings and lunch room are there, The outhouse by the lunchroom is still in use. Talked to King Harris last Summer, he is athletic director for all Garland Schools. was in your class in second grade. Mike

ANNA SEWELL (March 30, 1820-April 25, 1878) There is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to man and beast, it is all a sham.
