DOTTIE RAMBO R.I.P. (1934-2008)
Legendary Gospel music songwriter and singer Dottie Rambo dies at 74 on Sunday, May 11, 2008 when her bus runs off the highway near Mount Vernon, MO. She is known by us all as the Queen of Gospel Music. According to
http://gospelmusicupdate.com/ Dottie's memorial service is 1pm Monday, May 19th at Christ Church in Nashville, TN. Dottie is born Joyce Reba Luttrell on March 2, 1934 in Anton, KY. She signs a publishing contract with two-time governor of Louisiana Jimmie Davis who also is both a songwriter and singer. One of Jimmie's most memorable tunes is You Are My Sunshine. While a member of the Singing Rambos, which later shortens to the Rambos, she breaks barriers that blend both Country music and Black Gospel styles. During her career, Dottie writes over 2,500 Gospel songs. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Whitney Houston and many others record her Gospel tunes, plus she is a recording artist and has her very own Gospel music tours. In 1996, Whitney Houston records Dottie's I Go to the Rock for the soundtrack of her movie The Preacher’s Wife. Dottie Rambo leaves behind her singer-daughter Reba Rambo-McGuire of Franklin, TN, who is married to singer Dony McGuire; her sister Nellie Slaton of Cedar Rapids, IA; two brothers Jerry Luttrell of Madisonville, KY and Freddie Luttrell of Sturgis, KY; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

WAYNE WARNER (Springfield, MO) Jim, I guess you heard about the storms in OK and MO several people killed Saturday evening. My wife and I were at Ridgecrest Baptist Church Saturday night listening to a concert by Twila Paris and the church choir and orchestra. The worst storms missed us. Paris, by the way, has Assemblies of God background. Her great-grandfather was Rufus Nicholson, a mean old drunk who was converted in 1913 and became an evangelist, pastor, and church planter in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. Nicholson's grandson, Loren Cunningham, founded the worldwide ministry Youth With a Mission. (From "Look at Your Hand," by Jewell Nicholson Cunningham.) We don't know how it happened, but the Gospel song writer and singer Dottie Rambo was killed about 25 miles west of Springfield. Her bus went off the road and hit an embankment. She was on her way to a Mother's Day concert in Texas. Take care. Wayne Warner

KRISTEN HULSE (Little Rock, AR) Harold "Boe" Cook is my grandfather. I just thought you should know his name is spelled incorrectly on your website. He spelled it "Boe" not Bo. Thank you for remembering him. I know he would have been proud of the career that followed your time at KASO. Good luck and best wishes, Kristen Hulse, Art Specialist, Wilson Elementary

BOE COOK is the owner/GM and morning Drive DJ at my very first radio station - KASO-1240 - in Minden, LA in 1965.

JEANIE GIAGNI (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX)
Hi Lynn, I performed a search to try to find out where The Music Machine ("Talk Talk") performed in the Midland-Odessa area, during their tour through Texas in the summer of '66 or '67, and I came across a mention of the band. Perhaps one of your forum members remembers. I was just curious, since I saw them in Abilene, TX, the night before and hoped I'd be able to see them again the next night since their next performance was only about 200 miles down the road. They certainly were a 'machine' - they played nonstop - so I know the trip would have been well worth it. As Fate would have it, I became reacquainted with the lead singer (Sean Bonniwell), 40 years after meeting the band and he's now a close friend. I'd love to be able to ask him "Where did the MM perform when you played in Midland-Odessa?" and have the answer that he likely wouldn't remember. I suppose if I had performed in 100 towns in almost as many nights, I wouldn't remember either. Still, it would be fun to test his memory, and it would be an interesting bit of trivia. Jeanie

LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX) Jeanie, The column you saw on my site was "Jim Rose Remembers Radio" now carried at the CASHBOX site. I'm copying Mr. Rose. Lynn (

JOHNNY SHANNON (San Antonio, TX) Seems you are the EARLY RISER here Jim., or probably the late STAYER UPPER. Hope you're doing well. Was worried about you when this week's JRRR for Monday and Wednesday didn't show up until yesterday (Thurs). Was afraid you were having to take a vacation from too much free work you're doing --ya need some website ads to make it worth your while. This Clear Channel swap is fairly new news around here. Most talk is in the trades. When KZEP moves into CC's fancy digs across town, from their old studios near downtown, they'll know how it feels to go from laid back (what else would you expect from a Classic Rocker?) to uptight....real soon, IF they're still around to feel anything. Local speculation suggests they could evaporate to a state of automated voice tracking and/or syndication. Wishing them the best. Best to you and Tejas, Jim. Thanks for being in touch. J.S. By the way, do you know what Texas city is known as the Third Coast?

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX) Johnny Shannon's memories (by the way, Johnny is one of the nicest guys in the biz, and a personal friend of mine for years...and let's not forget his magnificent, glorious set of pipes) about KJ97 brought back a high school memory. I was a senior at St. Gerard High in 1975, the year before I entered the Rockin' world of radio. KEEZ was holding a contest for a free dance for the high school that brought in the most bottle caps. I was editor of the paper, and I organized a bottle cap...well, I wouldn't call it a drive, since we only managed to gather one or two large Folger's Coffee cans full. I couldn't believe it; we won the free dance...one of the smallest schools in town. I guess most kids listened to KTSA and KONO on AM, and KISS, KEXL on FM, or whatever station was spinning the wheel of formats, and playing music for the masses. I remember distinctly hearing KILLER QUEEN by QUEEN, and THE SYSTEM OF DOCTOR TARR AND PROFESSOR FETHER by THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT for the first time on KEEZ. Also, Johnny spoke of Brian Pierce. I worked with him at KLLS (Class FM), and he has the perfect deep, announcer type voice. We always called him PIERCE SHOW, but, when we said it, we said it with the deep register of our voice to imitate him. We called him that because on the air it was "The Pierce Show". Communicated with Pierce Show via email not too long ago, and he's entertaining the masses on the radio. At least one of us is. Toss Tejas a biscuit, and have a BIG week. Mark Carrillo,

TOM ASWELL (Denham Springs, LA) Jim, you mentioned the death of Jim Lowe Jr. There was a Jim Lowe who did a song called The Green Door, which I know you remember. Is it the same Jim Lowe?

JIM LOWE (Dot records recording artist) has a great tune called The Green Door that hits #1 in fall 1956. Another fella by the name of Jim Lowe is the morning DJ on WRR-1310, plus he has a tremendous night time radio show on WRR called Kat's Karavan from 10pm-midnight where he spins 1960s R&B records by great artists like guitarist and singer Brownie McGhee (1915-1996) and his team-mate with the blues harp Sonny Terry (1911-1986). Have a pristine copy of one of Jim Lowe's Kat's Karavan LPs in my vast record collection. For 30 years, Jim Lowe is also the voice of Big Tex at the annual Texas state fair at the Fairpark State grounds in my hometown of Dallas.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In Chuck Berry's Rock 'n' Roll hit Johnny B. Goode (#8-1958) he sings could play a guitar just like ringing a bell.

BOB DYLAN (May 24, 1941-p) Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them.
