ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

EAST COAST
WASHINGTON, DC - Does he or doesn't he want to retire? CBS TV's chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer announces that he plans to accept the golden handshake after the presidential inauguration. Hold the presses! CBS steps in and says wait just a minute. Schieffer signs a new long-term deal to continue his duties at CBS as Chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation host. The 71 year old veteran news broadcaster reacts, That means I'll be at CBS for the rest of my life. Luckily, I've got my wife here, and when I start to make a fool of myself, she'll tell me that. Bob Schieffer cuts his teeth as a news reporter at my alma mater, KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX.

MANHATTAN, NY - The Thomsom Reuters merger brings a cut-down in office space. Newsweek comes in and leases the 3rd and partial 4th floors of the 10-story office building in Hudson Square formerly occupied by Reuters. Is this the start of something good? Well, ask the some 140 Reuters Journalists who permanently leave the building. David Schlesinger, editor-in-chief of Reuters News, sends out an email that says after he looks into areas of natural overlap and duplication in coverage between Thomson and Reuters the newly merged company decides more than half of the cuts are in Europe. Does this affect only 70 stateside Journalists?

GREAT BARRINGTON, MA - Tom (Jay) Jaworski retires after 42 years behind the mic as the Voice of South Berkshire AM Drive newscaster and Talk host on Vox Communications' Adult Contemporary WSBS-860. On his show finalé, Jay's granddaughter hands him retirement cards that are signed by all the 5th through 8th grade students at Monument Valley Middle School.

GOODLETTSVILLE, TN - Leo Jackson longtime guitarist dies on Sunday, May 4, 2008 in his home from an apparent suicide. This is according to police and family members. The 73 year old is best known for his guitar work on records by Jim Reeves, plus other artists like Alabama and Hank Williams Jr. Family members add that Leo has minor surgery but his back problems get worse on Sunday. He takes a potent prescription pain medicine, Mepergan. But Jackson's family says the medication affects his mental state. His son Leo says that he begins to act irrationally and made comments that he would rather die than live with his pain. Our prayers go out to the Jackson family.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

WAYNE WARNER (Springfield, MO) Hello, Jim. Your trivia question on May 16 caught my eye. When my biography on Kathryn Kuhlman was released in 1993, the Rev. Ronald P. Lengwin, invited me to appear on his "Amplify" talk show for two hours to discuss my book. His show is broadcast over KDKA, Pittsburgh--the answer to your trivia question. Kathryn Kuhlman ministered from her Pittsburgh base for nearly 40 years, so I had a lot of interest and many calls, pro and con, as you might guess. The station had me on a telephone hookup from my home in Springfield, MO. Best wishes. Keep up the good work. Wayne Warner

KRISTEN HULSE (Little Rock, AR) Mr. Rose, I apologize but I am unsure of the date. I was actually using Google to find an address for Digger O’Dell. His daughter, Sharon, is married to my father’s brother, Steven Hulse. I am in charge of invitations for my paternal grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary. The article you wrote just happened to mention Boe, so I decided to investigate. Except for summer vacations, I did not live in Minden, we lived in Shreveport. My mother and father are both from Minden as well as the rest of my family. I am only 30 years old, so I will ask some of my relatives who went to high school in Minden if they are familiar with Billy. My Aunt Cleo worked at a dentist office for about 20 years, she may know his mother. I will ask her today. Kristen Hulse, Art Specialist, Wilson Elementary

DIGGER O'DELL is co-owner/Chief Engineer at my first radio adventure in 1965 on KASO-1240 in Shreveport-Minden, LA. Boe Cook is the co-owner/GM morning DJ who hires me right out of Elkins Institiute of Broadcasting's radio class in early 1965.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, I have not had the computer at home on for a couple of days. I'm not addicted to the computer habit yet. I can go a few days without turning it on. I'm sure now that school is out I'll have more time to check things out more often. I'll forward this to myself so I can be reminded to answer this e-mail. As for now, I have wiped everything out of this UNT computer for the summer. IT here is going to upgrade (uh,oh) stuff during the summer and we've been told that some of our stuff might get lost. This is the last message to go out. If you were in Dallas I'd play Oh Boy for you on my 78 rpm juke box! Bud

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) In reference to Mike Marshall's email that Bill Wamsley was the PD director when he worked at KULF, and adding that Wamsley later left for Cincinnati. It's true. He was on 1530 WCKY-AM when I worked there in the early 80's, and currently is a voice over talent, still living in the Cincinnati area, in Milford, Ohio. I'm giving you my own radio memories. Mary Lynn Knochelman, Cincinnati, Ohio.

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Thought for The Day. A taxpayer voting for Barrack Obama or Hillary Clinton is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, Texas) On the Internet I now enjoy listening to KRSM and their blend of Jazz. Not DXing but with my headphones sounds pretty good, I use dial-up so sometimes get a bad connection, but most of the time have good results. Also I like to listen to KUT, since I don't get them like I use to now that AFR has a translator on 90.5, If I had my way the rim shots would go serve the markets they were licensed to. I think it is a shame when a station duplicates the same programming, especially when it is not that strong like 104.1 with it carrying the Ticket. I know I am in a minority, I am single and past the target audience age. Also I am not easily swayed by advertisers. I use to get KLBJ-FM regularly in the Spring as well as KUT, also KASE would come in fairly often. I even have a QSL from KMFA. I heard KHFI but never could get enough to send for a reception report. On AM I sometimes could get a station on 1300 and a station for a while with R&B, but forget what frequency, I think it was 1370. 73, KC5RAI

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) OK jim, update on Ike Turner. The local coroners office has him o.d.'d on cocaine. After all those years, they never learn. Too Bad...he seemed to have beeen living a straight life...whenever I ran into him...anyway keep up the good work. CC

TRIVIA ANSWER: Legendary Jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer Miles Davis' (1926-1991) nickname is the Prince of Darkness. Miles' album The Prince of Darkness releases on November 30, 1999.
