HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY AND LABOR DAY WEEKEND
SOUTHEAST
[LOUISVILLE, KY] Cumulus Country WQKC FM (The Duck 93.9) switches to Sports as The Ticket and becomes the newest affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds Radio Network. But Louisville we have a problem. WQKC also broadcasts the Louisville Fire Arena2 Football League team whose games are at the same time as the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. To add fire to the flame the Fire just signs a broadcast deal with WQKC in February 2008. WQKC's FCC license of operation is for Sellersburg, IN and that's the location of its transmitter but WQKC's 2600 watt FM signal completely covers its target city of Louisville, KY.
[NASHVILLE, TN] As we mention in Wednesday's JRRR, the Queen of Gospel Music, Dottie Rambo (74), tragically dies when her tour bus runs off the rain-slick highway near Mount Vernon, MO on May 11, 2008. President George W. Bush writes a letter that proclaims Dottie's importance to American music. President Bush also sends Dottie's family the American flag that flies over the White House on Mother's Day.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the oldest trumpet player to ever have a chart-topping single? The answer appears below.
MID-AMERICA
[KANSAS CITY, KS] Trevor Hackl, a 17-year-old high school student, falls overnight from the 500-foot tower of Entercom News/Talk KMBZ-980 and dies on Saturday, May 17, 2008. This is the shorter of the two towers. Apparently Trevor is a trespasser at the locked-in tower site.
EAST COAST
[WASHINGTON, DC] Bob Woodward of Watergate fame accepts a buyout package from the Washington Post. Bob is not alone because about 100 other Post employees also agree to the Post's generous early retirement package.
[SPARTANBURG, SC] More radio musical chairs way down south in Dixie. In 2006 Al Moore swaps KYLA FM (Classic Country 106.7) Shreveport-Homer, LA to Educational Media Foundation for Gospel KWDF-840 (Mid-Louisiana's Gospel Voice) Alexandria-Ball, LA. In 2008 Christian group Wilkins Communications with headquarters in Spartanburg, SC buys Gospel KWDF from Al Moore. Wilkins now adds Louisiana to its radio properties in Nebraska, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georia, Kansas, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Mississippi.
[NEW YORK CITY, NY] AOL goes Country. The new AOL Country Music Channel (www.theboot.com) gives us fans introductions to recording artists, videos, brand new songs, select interviews and fresh commentaries. AOL also rolls out an Urban site called The Boom Box. Bill Crandall, AOL Music VP/Editor in Chief, says Despite these genres' popularity, the Web has grossly underserved these fans, until now.
GULF COAST
[AMARILLO, TX] KXGL FM (The Eagle 100.9) Feuer/McCord Communications Classic Hits makes airshift changes. Christi Stone mid-day DJ leaves for a position with Uncle Sam. Amy Heart MD/night DJ moves on up to Christi's mid-day spot. Aaron Gamble leaps from his part-time DJ position to full-time night airman. Aaron comes over from cross-town Cumulus Rock KZRK FM (Rock 108 Amarillo's Rock) Amarillo-Canyon, TX.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) So, you went to see a movie on your first day on the air? You must have been doing pretty good. My first day on the air I didn't have the money for admission to the movie. I had unfortunatley bought a half gallon of milk and some Cocoa Puffs. That was breakfast, lunch and dinner for a couple of days. It is ironic that you went to see a movie where someone gets their head chopped off, considering that in the radio business we were always getting our heads chopped off due to a PD wanting to "go in a different direction." Cheers from Kyle, TX, where we are still coo coo for Cocoa Puff! Jeff Cunningham, DC; Kyle, TX (
www.zoesplaceclinic.com)MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hi Jim. Well WQKC is the station the Reds signed their new radio deal with. And if I know the Reds, they'll probably make sure their games get precedence over the Louisville Fire. In a case like that, WQKC's staff might tell listeners to listen to the Fire on a sister station (if they have one). WLW has done it several times with 1530 WCKY (my former employer, when it was independently owned). In the offseason WLW has the Hot Stove Reds Report. But several times, when there was a college basketball game or another sporting event about to come on, they asked listeners to now switch to WCKY to hear the rest of the Reds program. I presume WQKC will handle it in a similar way. Ask your readers in Louisville to send you emails letting you know how it sounds! You have a good Memorial Day Weekend yourself. Mary Lynn Knochelman
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, Texas) Subject: House Of The Rising Sun. Hated to see the news about the publisher, AL GALLICO. When I was trying to learn to play the guitar, my friends would all ask for me to play House Of The Rising Sun. You were not a guitarist worth any type of respect if you could not play the song. Then people heard Hideaway, Freddie King and then that was the song you had to know how to play... I was at a friend's house and he hands me a guitar and says to me play Gloria. I am 54. and thinking I don't play those tunes anymore. He then brings out a pair of bongos and we do a few Calypso tunes like Jamaica Farewell and I Can See Clearly Now. We also did a rendition of Everybody Loves Saturday Night which was the theme of song of a TV show hosted by a local celebrity where teenagers lip synched to popular tunes. Charles George
DAN ROSEN-NKH (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Hey Jim, I turned 55 this year. Used to be married, as you know, but no longer. I have two great kids in the U.S., both of whom are in college. Son is the "screamer" in a punk rock band. (Maybe he should work at KTRK.) Daughter is a dancer. She appeared in a music video for a band that's pretty popular these days called "My Chemical Romance." As you indicated, the senoritas in Japan are muy guapa. However, I'm living by myself. Dan
JIMMY RABBITT (Grand Junction, CO) The Rockin' Blues Lab is Tuesday 2-5pm CDT on http://KAFMradio.org. The Rabbitt Report is Saturday & Sunday 2-5 CDT on http://JJradio.com.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1964 at 62, Louis Armstrong's #1 hit recording of Hello Dolly makes him the oldest trumpet player to ever top the Pop chart.
MARYLOU LIBERTO (Dallas, TX) Jim, MaryLou Liberto, FAHS '45, here. I am looking for the words to a song from the 50's, LADY. Not the recording by Kenny Rogers. This one was on a 78 Decca recording. It was recently heard on a Dallas radio station, but the station could not or would not give the info to my friend who heard it and called to get the info from them. I would really appreciate any advice you would have for me to find this recording with the words as well as music. We found the one music only. You have so much expertise in radio I just know that you would know where I could find this information. Thanking you in advance. Joseph and I appreciate your wit and wisdom and memories. MaryLou (Malloy) and Joseph Liberto FAHS '45
LADY comes up in several places in the Pop music chart. In fact, Lady is the name of my Chow doggie in the Fabulous Fifties in Dallas. She truly is a lady. The word Lady is the title of a Jack Jones tune (#39-1967) and I give it a few spins on KHFI FM. Styx has my favorite version of Lady (#6-1975) and I play it on KXOL-1360, Little River Band has a Lady (#10-1979) and I play its cart on KULF-790, Kenny Rogers finds another Lady (#1-1980) and it goes on KENR-1070, R&B group The Whispers locate their Lady (#28-1980), R&B singer D'Angelo with Lady (#10-1996). Also there's Lady Bird with Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood (#20-1967) which I spin on WFAA-820, Lady Blue Leon Russell (#14-1975) receives my attention on KXOL-1360. Several tunes with the word Lady pop up in music over the years, plus there's My Fair Lady which wins the Academy Award in 1964 for the film version of the 1956 Broadway stage musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion.
LORETTA LYNN (April 14, 1935-present) I was the first woman ever named Entertainer of the Year in country music.
