ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

WEST COAST
[LOS ANGELES, CA] The comical co-host of TV's Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, which debuts in January 1968, Dick Martin. dies Saturday night, May 24, 2008 at 86 of respiratory complications at a hospital in Santa Monica, CA. Remember Sock it to me! and You bet your sweet bippy? They become some of our biggest 1960s catch phrases. How about Arte Johnson's line Very interesting...but stupid? While I'm Program Director of Mod Country KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX we film a Laugh In style TV promo that catches on quickly and brings us a younger hip audience. In the late 1970s, Dick Martin splits with Dan Rowan and becomes one of TVs most active TV directors. In 1987, Rowan retires to France and later dies of cancer. Martin, who marries twice, has two sons, Richard and Cary.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Just wanted to let you know that John McCarty passed away last night. He was 55. We don't know the details yet of how or where, but if you'd like me to let you know when the services will be, please email me back. John worked with many of you guys over the years, at KLUV, Star 105, Young Country, KXOL, KFJZ and ABC Radio Networks doing traffic and/or jocking. He spent the last several years here at Traffic.com. Thanks, Mike

ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Jim, I got some bad news out of Dallas this morning. John McCarty, Operations Manager for Traffic.com in Dallas, passed-away suddenly last night (Monday night). Not sure what exactly it was that claimed him. John was well-liked by so many people. He had a passion for this business. I guess we're a dying breed. You can read posts on this at:
www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,100542.0.html#top Thanks, Andy

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hi again Jim. I need to get to bed. I'm still awake because I watched the Reds-Padres game, which the TV broadcast of it ended about 2am. As far as I know, WDJO-AM is one of the few radio stations owned independently, and other than the Paul Harvey satellite feed, all of it's announcers are local talent. I'm still grateful to them for picking up other radio station rejects, specifically Andy Furman from WFTK-FM and Paul Harvey from WLW. Very pleasant Oldies Music. Goodnight! Mary Lynn Knochelman

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) I remember when you were on KLIF. When they bought the News Wagon with the flashing letters across the top, they hired my Bill to drive it. He did it part time, as he was a conductor for the Santa Fe. One time he decided to drive by the station to show them what a great job he was doing. Everyone laughed as he had misspelled a word. The word was Rendezvous! Dick Glancy is my favorite. he has been an extremely faithful friend to Sam during his illness. By the way, Sam is not doing well at all. The doctors has said it is the beginning of Alzheimer's, but Sam thinks it is all of the medication he is taking. And I am speaking of Sam Pate. As for me, in talking with Sam, he remembers quite well. He talks a lot of his old days at KLIF, KBOX and KVIL. Back then, he was the guy who was always first on the scene in his red mobile. Usually he was on the scene before the Police arrived. I remember one time, he was on the scene of a shooting and everyone else was having a hard time finding the place as it was in the country. The officers radioed Sam to give them directions to the place.

MARTHA JOE THRASHER (Dallas-Farmers Branch, TX) Back "in those days" switchboards were not as automated as they were later in my working life as a telephone operator. We usually looked out of the switchboard room door around the newsroom when a reporter received a call, to be sure they were at their desks, and they had to go through us to place long distance calls. So I probably talked to him several times a day, though I doubt he would remember me at all. Thanks for the quick response! Martha Joe Thrasher; Farmers Branch, TX USA

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) I only worked at KONO for a short while and I am one of the few that probably has the highest regard for Jack Roth. He treated me like a son. I wanted to be a chief engineer that was truly in charge and he understood. He gave me a good reference when I decided to move on and never once gave me bad mouth in any way. I consider him a friend. I am sure he will not be able to be at this get together, as I have heard his health is not good. But without him and George "Super" Cooper, I probably would not know anyone. George Ing also passed some years ago. Since I live close to SA it is tempting, but not likely. Maybe Rudy Rocha will give me a call and beg. The phone still ain't ringing, so I figure it still ain't him, to use a coined and copyrighted phrase. Jeff Cunningham, DC

TRIVIA ANSWER: Barry Manilow does not write his 1976 hit single I Write the Songs. Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys actually writes the song. It lands on Billboard on November 15, 1975 and quickly rises to #1 in 1976.

BLAKE LINDSAY (DFW-Addison, TX) Happy Memorial Day Weekend to You and Tejas, Jim! We hope you both, are having a great time. Jennifer and I are having a real fun one and taking plenty advantage of that cool swimming pool. Our friend Mike Shannon is running the show over at AM-1360 the old KXOL frequency for a month and a half or so, as they transition from Business Talk, to lousy Liberal talk. Mike is taking positive advantage of this transition, with some great programming. This signal, received FCC approval for an improved power increase approximately five years ago. They are the full fifty thousand watts, well, in a couple of directions anyway. They are plenty loud and proud in the entire Metroplex in the daytime. Wish they had this first-rate signal in the sixties and seventies. Mike Shannon is eagerly inviting some of the legends we haven’t heard from in a while to volunteer an airshift on AM-1360, KNNY. They are calling it Retro Radio and I sure enjoyed hearing Jim Thomas playing his great seventies collection on Saturday afternoon. It sure brought back those reminding reasons why I wanted to pursue the airwaves and play those great tunes when I was a kiddo. I’m glad I got twenty-two years out of a career, which brought me many friendships including yours. How about coming on up to Dallas, and performing a shift for us Jim? We would love to hear your pipes back in Dallas Fort Worth. Give it some thought, and shoot Mike a hoot. Please do your very best in having a Blazin' good week ahead Jim.
