THE RETURN OF PASSWORD
In the summer of 2008 Password returns to our TV sets with a new name and format, plus one of America's most beloved TV entertainers as its emcee. Million Dollar Password premieres Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 8 pm ET on CBS with our favorite TV host with the most Regis Philbin. This is a modern version of one of TV's best game shows. Can we remember as far back as October 2, 1961 when the original Password makes its debut? How the time flies when we have so much fun. The final new episode of Password hits TV screens on March 26, 1982, which is less than a year after its host Allen Ludden dies of stomach cancer on June 9, 1981 at 63 in Los Angeles, CA. A few months before, Allen suffers a stroke which forces him to retire. Tom Kennedy takes over as host of Password Plus until it heads off into the sunset in 1982. Super Password appears in 1984 but without Allen Ludden as host it disappears. The absence of Password leaves a gigantic crater in our TV sets as big as the new Dallas Cowboys NFL football stadium in Arlington. CBS decides to bring Password back with a whole new approach. Sunday's premiere features four regular citizens along with the familiar faces of Rachael Ray and Neil Patrick Harris. The name Neil Patrick Harris doesn't ring a bell? Neil is from the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The original Password host is Allen Ludden who is the husband of actress Betty White. Allen and Betty become husband and wife in June, 1963. Bob Stewart of Goodson-Todman Productions creates the original Password. The announcers on the original Password are Jack Clark and Lee Vines on CBS and John Harlan on ABC. Welcome back Password!
TRIVIA QUESTION: What Rock group's only beardless member is Frank Beard?
EAST COAST
[WASHINGTON, DC] William Gertz reporter with the Washington Times receives marching orders to appear before a federal judge in June 2008 to identify sources for a news item about the prosecution of a California based Chinese spy ring. A law professor who specializes in press controversies says this might head into a major First Amendment crisis.
MID-AMERICA
[OKLAHOMA CITY, OK] A new cable news network that puts its focus on a black audience, Black Television News Channel, has a launch date in 2009. This is the brain child of former U.S. Representative J.C. Watts of Oklahoma. In a press release Watts says it provides original news programming with a distinctly African-American perspective, The new Black Television News Channel signs a multiyear agreement with Comcast Corporation. Watts is Oklahoma's 4th Congressional District Republican representative from 1995 to 2003 in the U.S. House. He now heads the J.C. Watts Companies in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C.
WEST COAST
[LOS ANGELES, CA] AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers burn the midnight oil Tuesday into Wednesday, May 28, 2008. They conclude with a tentative three-year agreement on their primetime TV contract. Better watch out because those jobs might just ship overseas, too. The deal features continued consent of using actors clips outside the scope of promotional use. This is a major hurdle during the negotiations, which begins on May 7, 2008.

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim, Tom Allen, a major personality in Austin and on KVET/KASE for over 30 years, is retiring. Before Austin, Tom was PD at KBOX for several years in the 1970s. Before that he was PD at WIL, the country powerhouse in St. Louis. Tom is a rare and very creative talent... and a super nice guy. I had the pleasure of working with him during his KBOX years. Memo To: All Staff From: Mac Daniels, Program Manager, KVET/KASE CC: Pam McKay; Debi Mueller Date: 5/28/2008 Re: Tom Allen It’s with mixed emotions that I tell you Tom Allen has decided to "Hang Up The Headphones" and retire. He submitted his resignation today effective 6/30/2008. It’s impossible to mention what Tom has brought to KVET and KASE since 1979, not to mention the broadcast industry for over 40 years. I’m sad that he will be leaving us and the industry. I am happy for Tom that he will have a great opportunity to spend time with his family, especially his new grandchild. I can’t thank Tom enough for his service to radio and I can’t imagine what this industry would’ve missed had Tom Allen not chosen radio as his profession. Please join me in congratulating Tom on a great career and wish him well.
FRANK JOLLEY (Los Angeles, CA) Jim, Hi, awhile back an Uncle Ricky had asked me for a few of my airchex from Texas radio stations and I lost his address. Does anyone you know - know how to reach Uncle Ricky of Reel Radio? FJ PS: A few of my airchecks can be heard at:
MARYLOU LIBERTO (Dallas, TX) Jim, we still live in Dallas, in fact, I have never lived more than 3 miles from the Old Red Court House. We live in Kessler Park. I have a few words from the song. They are: I'm in love with you, so in love with you, so lovely lady won't you love me too? I'm in love with you, so lovely lady won't you love me too? Thanks so much for your help.
WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#510-42) May 30, 2008 [Friday] Tell Dave Lane I'm glad he's a hit somewhere!
MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hi again Jim. I just realized that I misspelled and you published the name of the talk show host I worked with at WCKYAM 1530. His first name is Jan but his last name is Mickelson (not Michelson) of 1040AM WHO Radio, in Des Moines, Iowa. I had been his talk show screener till I left WCKY in 1985. He remained there till he took this job at WHO Radio in 1988. He hosts his "Mickelson In The Morning" Talk Show from 9-11:30am Weekdays. Mary Lynn Knochelman
TRIVIA ANSWER: The only beardless member of ZZ Top is drummer Frank Beard.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, Texas) Hi, Great column as usual. I don't plan to buy the book on criticism of Conservative Talk Radio, I just turn off the radio and play my guitar. Besides I have always thought Rush was a good entertainer until I knew what he was going to say... I also don't plan to buy a book by a former member of the Today Show. I figure a Journalist should keep her bedroom antics behind closed doors like a Country Singer mentions. Besides I never thought she was pretty. Now Maury Poviches(sp) wife might be another story but I know my chances on that one. I also don't like watching Jay Leno, I don't find him funny just vulgar. I guess I am too old to enjoy his humor. I use to like a tune Cast My Fate To The Wind. I have it on a 45 by Steve Alamo(sp), I no longer can read the label, but the version I liked most was by the Sounds Orchestral that KEIR 102.9 would play before it became KDTX. What amazes me is how people I use to disagree with I agree with more and vice-versa. I have been told a Liberal is a Democrat that has never been mugged, well I once got mugged by three guys, I had left the studios of NTRB, North Texas Radio For The Blind, the SCA of KERA-FM. I was told I should wait for the bus a bit longer by Gary Ketler who helped get me on. I told him everything would be okay and left to go catch my bus... Somehow I made it to KCHU a few blocks away and a friend called the police and got me home. A few years later I was walking home and a young guy held me up for a guitar I had with me it was a Fender Acoustic. I later called the police after getting home...and there were people who told me I should just get over it... Live and Learn. I am enclosing a sample of my guitar playing. A tune I first heard done by Ian Anderson and another I am asked to play at churches when they learn I play Classical Guitar for some reason. Charles George, KC5RAI P.S. Always wanted to be a rock in roll star, actually just another Alan Freed.
RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1803-1882) Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could.
