BO DIDDLEY R.I.P. (December 30, 1928-June 2, 2008)
A flamboyant early day 1950s Rock'n'Roller, singer and guitarist who invents his own name dies of heart failure at 79 at his home in Archer, FL. Real name Ellas Otha Bates (name after his adoption: Ellas McDaniel). A music-maker who plunks a home-made square-shape guitar with a rhythm all its own, wears dark glasses and a small brim black hat describes none other than Bo Diddley. How can we forget the 1983 movie Trading Places when Dan Aykroyd plays the wealthy preppie Louis Winthorpe III who loses everything and tries to pawn an expensive watch worth thousands of dollars. Dan describes all of the watch's outlandish features. Pawnshop owner Bo Diddley says something like, In Chicago, it's worth $50. Bo Diddley is an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. In 1999, Bo receives a lifetime achievement award at the Grammy Awards. Diddley also plays for President George H. W. Bush and President Bill Clinton. Diddley says that he appreciates the honors that he receives, but it didn't put no figures in my checkbook.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What recording artist has his first Platinum album since 1978 with an album in 1994?
THIS JUST IN
Hollywood movie actress Susan Sarandon tells John Hiscock of the London Telegraph that if John McCain wins over Barack Obama she hightails it to Italy or Canada. Why those two countries? In an interview published on May 24, 2008 to promote the British release of her movie Speed Racer, plus the DVD release of Sarandon's anti-Iraq war film, In the Kingdom of Elah, she rants If McCain gets in, it's going to be very, very dangerous. It's a critical time, but I have faith in the American people. If they prove me wrong, I'll be checking out a move to Italy. Maybe Canada, I don't know. We're at an abyss. The question of the day is does she keep her promises?

LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Jim, I was program director of WIL from June of 69 through the end of January of 71. I hired Tom Allen for the noon to three shift in October of 69. If I remember correctly I got him from a station in Lansing, Michigan. When I left WIL to go back to the west coast I told WIL manager, Tom Perryman, I thought Tom was the one for the pd job. He has been a credit to the industry. Thanks for your dedication. Larry Scott
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Jim, I'm a derelect for not tipping you first to Tom Allen's retirement from KVET/KASE. I got word from former music director Steve Gary last week. The irony is, I had a conversation the day before with Neal Sperry, garden show host on KRLD for the past 28 years. He remarked that in 28 years, he had never been invited to a KRLD employee retirement party. No employee had been allowed to retire. They all got kicked to the curb before they were ready to go. Tom is one of my all-time favorites. I was newsman on his morning drive show on KASE for six years. He was always a class act. He also was always either #1, or tied for #1 with the KVET morning show. He never fell below double digits, from the late '70s to the Capstar/Chancellor/AMFM/Clear Channel takeover. Then he got moved to afternoons on KVET, and scored some of that station's best ratings. Tom kept busy with his 'Tom Allen Music Machine' dee-jay service, and all the commerical and PSA voices he did. Working with Tom was one of the highlights of my career. Bob Crowley
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, Texas) Hi, I see that Harvey Korman passed away. I thought he was funny. I liked the fact that he could be funny without overly being crude or as crass as many other entertainers feel they have to be, I enjoyed Tim Conway when they worked together. Though it was hard for me to think of Tim Conway at times except in the role he played on McHale's Navy. Sort of like I thought of some actor as Maynard G. Crebs eventhough he was playing a different role. I took a drama class in High School in my junior year. We had a play for the school that year. I was not that good of an actor so instead I opened and lowered the curtains and other props. I felt scared being up above the stage made me think of the Marx Brothers. I have always liked to doodle so created a doodle with the paint program built into Windows. I was thinking of other Top-40 stations I use to enjoy at night hearing. Probably my favorite was KELI 1430, and WKY 930, but they did not always come in. I also liked KXOK and KHOW both on 630, sometimes it was funny they would be playing the same song and be just a word apart, though I think they were billed as MOR they still sounded like Top-40 stations to me. I also enjoyed a station from Lake Charles on 1580 (?) my memory has faded a bit so not real sure of the call or the exact frequency. Charles George, KC5RAI
JOHN WESLEY DOWNEY (Houston-Sugar Land) New Pledge of Allegiance (TOTALLY AWESOME)! Since the Pledge of Allegiance And The Lord's Prayer Are no t allowed in most Public schools anymore Because the word 'God' is mentioned. Written by a 15 yr. old school kid in Arizona: NEW School prayer: Now I sit me down in school Where praying is against the rule For this great nation under God Finds mention of Him very odd. If Scripture now the class recites, It violates the Bill of Rights. And anytime my head I bow Becomes a Federal matter now. Our hair can be purple, orange or green, That's no offense; it's a freedom scene. The law is specific, the law is precise. Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice. For praying in a public hall Might offend someone with no faith at all. In silence alone we must meditate, God's name is prohibited by the state. We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks, And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks. They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible. To quote the Good Book makes me liable. We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen, And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King. It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong, We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong. We can get our condoms and birth controls, Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles. But the Ten Commandments are not allowed, No word of God must reach this crowd. It's scary here I must confess, When chaos reigns the school's a mess. So, Lord, this silent plea I make: Should I be shot; My soul please take! Amen
