[DAWU, CHINA] We think that we have bad days when our computers run slow or the screen freezes, our paper shreadders stop shreadding or our TVs go on the blink. But these are mighty difficult times for folk singers in the Celestial Empire. Drolmakyi, a Tibetan folk singer, who lives in the tiny town of Dawu about 150 miles outside the Tibetan Autonomous Region learns the hard way that free speech doesn't come lightly under Communist Chinese rule. On March 30, 2008, as she hangs her laundry on the balcony of her apartment, Chinese authorities appear from out of nowhere and arrest her. They wisk her away like a thief in the night. The 31-year-old single mother doesn't even get a chance to bid adieu to her three tykes who are at play outside. Her kiddos have no earthly idea what's going on until they discover that their mother is no longer at home. In mid-March 2008 friction begins to rise when protests against Chinese rule sweeps through ethnic Tibetan areas. Tibetan folk music that begins in Amdo in the 1980s, known as dunglen, enjoys a newfound revival. Its slow, sad, hypnotic tunes tell of lost love or some tragedy. Tibetan folk singer Drolmakyi is a member of the local government council. She is well-known around Dawu. She grows up tending yak in the mountains and never forgets her nomadic roots. At the local nightclub, which opens in the fall, Drolmakyi and her friends sing ballads that long for the old Tibetan ways. The facts are not clear about what leads to Drolmakyi's arrest because Chinese authorities never let her family know of any charges. Her mother says in an interview, Nothing, nothing, nothing. They told us nothing. It is like she disappeared. Her mother says that she hears that Drolmakyi sketches a Tibetan flag to use in one of her nightclub acts. But under Article 105 of China's criminal code, folks can be charged with incitement to subversion of state power if they criticize Chinese rule. In this time of U.S. presidential election, we Americans must thank God every single day that we live in a free country where we have the right to sing and say whatever is in our hearts as long as it does no harm to any person. Do I hear an Amen?

[OMAHA, NB] Tom Becka afternoon host on Clear Channel Talk KFAB has a new book on the market called There's No Business Without the Show: Using Showbiz Skills to Get Blockbuster Sales. It might win the longest title category.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-Newton, MA) Hi Jim, Many thanks for the jokes you sent on Wednesday. They were short and sweet, and I got a kick outta reading them. Hope you have a great summer down there in Houston. Things have been going pretty well with our sports teams up here in Boston. Even the Bruins made it to the playoffs this year. However, we're still trying to recover from Superbowl. Keep up the great work, Podner. Tom Ellis
JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Subject: On The Air. Hi Jim - I am very happy to tell you that I am back "On The Air" for the rest of June on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am until the Noon hour. I know some of you care and I know there are a few who don't care, but in any case, I will be doing a music show from the studios of KMNY-1360 on the AM dial - licensed in the City of Hurst, Fort Worth - Dallas, TX. I WILL NOT be playing Country music but, instead, will play 1950 to 1975 Real Rock and Roll. I realize this will cause me to loose some listeners, but then again I might gain some. It is a commercial free format with no boundaries attached. Today I had Mike Shannon on the air with me. So there is a little bit of talk - mostly talk about all of the other radio stations in the D/FW Area and the various happenings of the day and of days in the past. It is called Retro Radio and, again it is at 1360 AM. For you long time residents of the area, it originally KXOL Radio from 1948 until 1985. Again - 9:00 AM until Noon. Listen in - I think you might have some fun! I'm having the time of my life!!!! I love this stuff!!!!! Jay Weaver (D/FW-Hurst, TX)
TRIVIA ANSWER: The Beach Boys have their third #1 hit in fall 1966 with Good Vibrations which is one of my absolute favorite tunes. They do not have another tune-topper on the charts until fall 1988 when Kokomo strikes #1.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, I smiled and laughed when i saw your email "How about These'. What are the announcers you worked with doing now to have money coming in? Thanks. P.S. if you know any one wanting to get a motel in room in Marshall they will need to make a reservation possibly weeks or months in advance. Marshall Motels are sold out. I am thinking in part to the oil industry. That i hear absolutely no one talk about around Marshall Texas 75672. Now in Midland I can just be walking down Wall Street to The Head Hunters Barber Shop and the passersby are talking oil in Midland Texas 79701. Leslie Wayne Hodges 903 934 8414
JAY LENO (April 28, 1950-present) War continues in Iraq. They're calling it Operation Iraqi Freedom. They were going to call it Operation Iraqi Liberation until they realized that spells 'OIL'.
