WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) just heard that Mike Scott who was one of the Hudson and Harrigans at KILT, morning guy at KQUE for years, passed away Saturday. Just very sad, Mike was a great guy and would give you just about anything. I remember asking him if he had a copy of a song we used to play on KQ, he not only made me a CD but added several other classics to the cd. One thing is certain, none of us are getting out of this life alive. Not sure where he stood with God but I hope he made his peace.

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, I'm finally retiring from my job at Tweeter and my wife and I are leaving next Monday to stay with her mother in Italy for three months. Please put the e-mails of JRRR on hold for me till September 20. Enjoy hearing the news and stories from everybody. Thanks, Mike Marshall

JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Hi Jim - This situation will last to the end of June. That means three more week-ends - three more Saturday AM's for me. Not much, but better than nothing! Hope all is well with you! Jay

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, I noticed in today's newsletter that Jay Weaver sent you a note with details about Mike Shannon's Retro Radio that will be on the air for the rest of the month between format changes of KMNY. I am also doing a show on 1360 AM (now with 50,000 watts in the daytime). There are no music clocks, no commercials, no computer playlists, no ratings to worry about, no music test scores to use for programming the music, etc. Everything a jock ever dreamed of having! What a kick! It's almost like being dropped back into 1973 when I was doing the first regularly scheduled oldies show in DFW on MusicRadio 570, WFAA with "57 Nostalgia Place." I'm on Sundays from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. This Father's Day I'll be highlighting songs "to, for, and about Dad." The subject might sound like a lot of syrup, along with the syrup there were some really good rockin' songs about Papa, Dad, or Father. Many of those have been overlooked and not played on radio for years. By the way, the station is streamed. For details the website address is

DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, Just for the record, nobody "ran Big Daddy off" at KBUC. My father, who succeeded Jim Rose as PD quit KBUC to go into business with Odey Crabtree and form the Mark VII advertising agency. My dad was the first guy in memory that H.B. didn't fire, which ticked off the old dictator royally, especially with the #1 ratings dad carried for his morning show on KBUC. H.B. wished him well, then embarked on a campaign to put him and Odey out of business. Needless to say, that didn't work and the next year "Big Daddy" Glenn (Dean) Daniels and Odey cost KBUC, according to the Turners at least $150,000 in revenue as they converted old accounts they'd have loved to bring to KBUC to television advertising. Unfortunately H.B. refused to "recognize" the advertising agency out of spite while the ad agency grew and evolved into a top player in the San Antonio marketplace. Ten years later, my father went on to create and found CMT "Country Music Television." Bet that put a burr up old H.B.'s butt too! All the best, G. Dean Daniels

RADIO MEMORIES ARE FUZZY for some but every single day in radio since my very first Sunday on the air at KASO-1240 in Minden, LA in 1965 are in my memory tank for keeps. Some folks are too young to remember and a few are too seasoned to recall exact details and facts but they stand out in my mind as I travel Texas as Program Director and/or Music Director at almost every radio station since my broadcast career begins in 1965. And that's a lot of radio stations in Texas' biggest markets. Format, ownership and programming changes follow me down each path. Make some bad decisions in offers that I accept. Those offers from good radio stations that I deny haunt me to this very day. But who can say? There are many radio station offers that I regret taking tremendously but they only make the good ones even better. Offers that I couldn't turn down are constant reminders of things too good to be true. Truly believe that the word challenge constantly draws me to certain radio opportunities. Although some of those challenges turn out to be mega catastrophies. In radio I soon discover that nothing lasts forever but oh what a joyous and wonderful ride it is.

TRIVIA ANSWER: None of the songs on the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band originally release as singles. The album release date is June 1, 1967 in the UK and June 2nd in the USA. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranks Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the greatest album of all time. In the UK the album debuts at #8 before it even releases and the next week it peaks at #1 where it remains for 23 consecutive weeks. The Sound of Music soundtrack knocks the album off the top position on the week that ends on November 18, 1967. The Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album wins the Grammy Award for Album of the Year which is a first for a Rock album and Best Contemporary Album in 1968. U.S. sales for the album total 11 million units with 30 million worldwide.
