ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ANOTHER LARGE NEWSPAPER CUTS STAFF

The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram announces on Monday, June 16, 2008 that 130 employees exit through involuntary layoffs and a voluntary buyout plan. Gary Wortel, the paper's publisher, says the reduction is about 10 percent of the total work force at the paper and will affect virtually every department, from the newsroom to advertising, circulation and the press operation...advertising revenues have declined in the past year and that the losses have accelerated with the economic slump that is gripping the country. Wortel says Surveys show changes to the printed paper and its online operations over the past 12 months have increased the Star-Telegram's total audience and reader satisfaction, , but the economic forecast for near-term is not encouraging, which convinced McClatchy, the paper's parent company, to downsize the work force at the 30 daily papers it owns across the United States. Gary tells his employees This is a painful, but necessary step. We're operating in a time of great change for the Star-Telegram and the newspaper industry in general. As a news company, we have often reported on such transitions in other industries; now we face the painful realities ourself. The Sacramento, CA-based McClatchy plans to cut 1,400 jobs nationwide which is 10% of its entire staff. This should allow annual savings of about $70 million and reduce McClatchy's overall expenses by $95 million to $100 million through 2009.

KAREN JOHNSTON (Houston, TX) Hello Jim, A few months ago I stumbled on your newsletter. I'm so glad that I found it. I am so sorry to hear about Mike Scott. He was such a great guy and extremely talented. Any details that can be supplied would be greatly appreciated. It's good to see so many familiar names of old friends that I have many fond memories of, including you. Best regards to everyone. Karen Johnston; KNUZ, 1972-1981; KFMK, 1982-1991; KODA, 1991-1996

GLEN ASHWORTH (Lebanon, OR) Jim, I see Laura has surfaced on FOX NEWS @ 2PM Pac and 5 eastern. Monday-Friday. Glen Ashworth

NORM PERRY (Ocala, FL) I saw an article that mentioned Tom Perryman of 104.1 "The Ranch" (KKUS-FM) in Tyler, Texas. I'm surprised to learn that he is still deejaying. The well-known Perryman has been a giant radio personality for many years. I remember him doing radio from back in the 1950s. Atta boy, Tom. Glad to hear you're still out there spinnin'em. I gave it up (retired) sixteen-and-one-half years ago after 37 years. My last radio gig was WMOP in Ocala, FL on January 1, 1992. Norm Perry Enjoying life in sunny Ocala, FL. If you are over 40, your choice of today's entertainment has been taken away from you and awarded to teenagers and young adults. You and I don't count anymore.

GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim: It was a shock to hear about the passing of one of America's great programmers and jocks, Mike (Belisle) Scott. When I was in the Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton, Mike gave me my first real break in radio by hiring me to do weekends at KCBQ in 1968 with the likes of Dex Allen, Barry Boyd, Gary (The leader of the little people) Allyn, Lee Simms, Bobby Wayne, Jimmy Rabbitt and Jack (the spittin' image of Clark Gable ) Vincent. At that time KGB, Bill Drake's flagship, was the overwhelming dominant force in San Diego. Mike went after KGB with an enormous energy that resulted in him being the first programmer in the country to beat a Drake Station. Mike Scott was innovative, did voices almost as good as Mel Blanc, and knew how to communicate...not only with his audience but his employees as well. Mike had the highest numbers in the history of KLIF while doing mid-days with a 57 Pulse in 1967. When Mike left the airwaves he developed his own production studio in Houston and did extremely well. He was truly one of the great radio people in America and will be sorely missed! Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) You know I was at KILT in '68 when Mac Hudson started at KILT, before H&H. He did a one man show for a year or two, then Paul Menard came in to team with him. Mac had a big family, 5 or 6 kids, and I think he went out to Calif, his wife took her own life by hanging, and I understand at Mac Hudson has died too. He was a very funny guy. Alie & I are still "kicking"... Hang in there my friend, Blessings, Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."

CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston, TX) OPEC sells oil for $136.00 a barrel. OPEC nations buy U.S. grain at $7.00 a bushel. Solution: Sell grain for $136.00 a bushel. Can't buy it? Tough! Eat your oil! Ought to go well with a nice thick grilled filet of camel...

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, It was really shocking this afternoon to hear of the death of Tim Russert. He was a consummate newsman, and a poster person for objectivity and journalistic talent. There are way too many talking heads, and precious few people out in the electronic media any more who really know how to get and report news. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music "We're at the best parties!"

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, I remember listening to Mike Marshall on WFAA 570 Dallas in about February 1969. I was living in Pecos Texas then where I attended the new Pecos Junior High 7th grade. Lee Douglas came on WFAA 570 about 6:30 p.m. and went to 8:00p.m. Then Mike Marshall followed. From What I remember WFAA 570 was carrying NBC NEWS at the top of the hour. Listening to Lee Douglas was fun and I looked forward to it. Yep I could hear 570 in Pecos Texas. Home of Billy Sol Estes. Leslie Wayne Hodges in Marshall, Texas

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Phantom of the Opera prowls the opera house in Paris, France.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Hi, People keep saying they are tired of the Politicians putting others down. I want to hear and see what they do different than their put downs of their competition, but then maybe they don't plan anything different or better. Thanks to my HD Radio, I now am enjoying the "Strip" 100.3-2. It has almost gone back to being KBOX-FM but with less personality. I once called the operator on duty and we talked almost his whole shift. No wonder I could not do well in school the next day. Charles George, KC5RAI

BLAISE PASCAL (June 19, 1623-August 19, 1662) Small minds are concerned with the extraordinary, great minds with the ordinary.
