AUTOLINE MOVES ON

Steve Overbeck, auto expert who hosts Autoline in Cincinnati, OH, bypasses offers from two FM radio stations and brings his show to Oldies WDJO-1160. The 58-year old Steve says This isn't the biggest station in town, but I felt more comfortable there. I didn't want to go corporate again. Overbeck's show premieres on its new home WDJO from 7-10pm on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Steve suddenly leaves Clear Channel WKRC-550 on April 19th. He is a Cincinnati radio fixture for 30 years. The Madisonville mechanic has discussions with other FM radio stations, but decides to sign up with #18 ranked Oldies WDJO-1160. EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX) Jim, I recorded two of my syndicated radio shows at Mike Scott's studio weekly for nearly ten years. He had been going down hill physically for several weeks, but never discussed the cause. Seven weeks ago he suggested I find another studio because he did not think he could continue working. Five weeks ago an associate called and told me the studio was closed. Monday the 9th I heard of his passing on the 7th fourth hand. Since that time I have learned nothing more as to cause or funeral arrangements. A sad end for a great talent. We see more and more from the messages from Mike's friends what an accomplished professional he was. Since you are so tight with the Texas Radio Hall of Fame I wish you would forward all of these messages to them. Awhile back they did a tribute to every Hudson & Harrigan that took to the microphone at KILT. All except Mike, who was the second Harrigan. I informed them of that slight at the time, but never received a reply and Mike never received his due. He deserves much better than that. Harold Gunn

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Tell Karen Johnston that Arch Yancey was asking about her the last time we played golf which was just few weeks back. Many of us had wondered where the heck she was! See if you can get more info please. I don't think we can drag Arch into the 20th century much less the 21st! He does have satellite radio in his truck so that was a big step! Karen is back in Houston? Where is she working or do you know?

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, J.P. Pritchard was news director at KULF back in '82, and hired me away from KNOW in Austin. The late George Cooper was PD at KULF at the time, Stevens & Pruitt were on mornings, Beau Weaver worked there, as did Dennis "Crash" Collins. I was brought in as assignments editor in the newsroom. I moved over to KTRH a few months later as p.m. news anchor. I think you preceded me by a little bit at KULF. By the way, I still miss George Cooper...he was my mentor in the business, hiring me to work at WOAI back in '73. I told him once that he taught me a lot of what I know about radio...he laughed and told me that he didn't teach me all HE knows! Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music "We're at the best parties!"

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Here is some more of my guitar playing. I first took some lessons in a group at the YMCA in the building across from The First Baptist Church. A lady in the class happened to be a librarian so we would discuss music, she has gone on to be a professional musician. If I remember correctly she married some one from KERA. I told some one that I remember KRLD trying to be a Top-40 station at one time in the 60s, but the person says they think I was making it up. I worked for about a month at a Howard Johnsons Restaurant, Mockingbird and Central. It now is a Compass Bank where it was, anyway, across the street there was a Radio Station that some of the staff would come at lunch from. Here are some tunes from Broadway with my interpretations. Charles George, KC5RAI

GARY ALLYN (San Diego-Fallbrook, CA) Happened to me too, Jim. In San Antone. Forget the spanish station-KCOR or KUKA or something...they were number one at night, but they were a DAYTIME station!! ARB had a heckava time explaining that one to me when I was PD of KONO. Never ever thought that ARB was close to being accurate. I think the PPM's will be better...but then again, a OUIJA board would be better. Best, Gary Allyn

RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#517-47) June 15, 2008 [Monday] Hi Jim: BOY what a shock to see a comment I made...in your newsletter this week about KMVK!! Let me make a clarification, because the comment is giving an image of something else. I never applied at KMVK so I wasn't turned down for a gig. I still feel They made a mistake in dumping smooth jazz for a format that has no rudder or compass. So there's no sour grapes on my part at all. Ray

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) is widely known as Monk. Many Jazz buffs refer to Monk as the founder of bebop.

LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) When I got to WIL, Walter (Vaughn) was doing afternoon drive and I left him in that spot because he was doing very well. He was still there when I left. Davy Lee, from Denton had worked at KBOX, was doing the all night show. By the way, Davy is still working at WIL. Jim, you know Davy sang bass with Sid King and The Melody Makers. It was Davy's bass voice on "Who Put The Turtle In Myrtle's Girtle." Thanks for your dedication. Larry

JANE AUSTEN (1775-1817) Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure. [Pride and Prejudice]
