ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
GEORGE CARLIN (1937-2008) R.I.P.
Grammy-Award winning standup comedian and actor George Carlin dies on Sunday, June 22, 2008 of heart failure at 71 in Santa Monica, CA. Jeff Abraham, George's publicist, says that he finished a show at the Orleans casino in Las Vegas last week and was planning to take the month off to relax and work on a new book of essays and musings. Carlin normally takes summers off but his next tour begins on July 20th in San Diego with concert dates through December. George and I have something in common. At separate times, we are DJs on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX. He is there in the early 1960s and I arrive in the mid 1970s. We all remember George's famous Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television comedy routine. During his 50 years in show business, George Carlin has 22 solo albums and 3 bestselling books. George's first wife, Brenda, dies in 1997. Carlin leaves behind his wife Sally Wade, daughter Kelly Carlin McCall, son-in-law Bob McCall, brother Patrick Carlin and sister-in-law Marlene Carlin. In November 2008, George Carlin is to receive the Mark Twain prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What popular Frank Sinatra tune becomes Elvis Presley's best-selling hit after he dies? The answer appears below.
WRIGLEY SING ALONG
ESPN Radio morning Sports guys Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg will perform the traditional Wrigley Field sing-a-long song Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles game at Wrigley Field on Thursday, June 26, 2008. It all begins with the late Harry Caray as he leads Chicago White Sox fans to sing what becomes the basebal anthym during the seventh-inning stretch in the mid-1970s. In 1982, Harry carries the tradition on with him to Wrigley Field and to Chicago Cubs fans. 2008 marks the 100th anniversary since Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer write the song.

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio, TX)
Jim, You probably already know this but Nick sadly passed away yesterday morning due to his cancer. Nick and I had been trading emails after he started reviewing and then contributing to my "remembering KEXL" website. (www.penningtontechnicalarts.com/KEXL/) At this point I don't know any details about a memorial service - only that there will be one. It is a very sad thing as Aubrey seemed to be a very special person who fought on through. JayTOM ASWELL (Denham Springs, LA) Jim, very few people remember that George Carlin, while stationed at Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, LA., worked part time as a disc jockey at KJOE in nearby Shreveport. It was while he was at KJOE that Stan Lewis of Stan's Record Shop fame received a new shipment of records for his store and discovered a copy of Elvis Presley's All Shook Up. The record had not yet been released by RCA so Stan knew he had something special and he took the record to KJOE. Carlin subsequently became the first deejay in America to play the song on the air. He caught a lot of flak for breaking the embargo on the record, but at the same time, it was Carlin's first brush with fame. I have included this anecdote in my book Louisiana Rocks: the True Genesis of Rock & Roll, scheduled for publication next spring. Tom Aswell
MIKE SHILOH (Houston, TX) Subject: Mike Scott. Jim: I was shocked to find out that he'd passed. You know, of course, that Mike ran a recording studio for many years and he was one of the pros. You've heard that smooth voice many times on commercials over the past couple of decades. His biggest claim to fame was probably doing afternoons on KQUE during the '80s. (Back then, I knew him because I was his news/traffic guy.) Unless of course you count the fact that he was also once "Hudson" of "Hudson and Herrigan," on 610-KILT for a brief time! He told me he just hated the early mornings, so he quit. Can you imagine the guts it took to walk away from the biggest morning franchise in Houston? I congratulted him the night in 2003 as he was walking off-stage at the old Adams Mark Hotel after the Texas Radio Hall of Fame tribute to Hudson and Herrigan, and he was in great spirits. Funny thing is, I ran into him about a year ago while he was working part time at the local Metro studios, and he had lost so much weight I hardly recognized him. He was sudued, but still kind and so professional, just like he always was. And still funny, just like you'd expect an ex-"Hudson" to be. Mike Shiloh
CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Really sad to read about Mike Scott. He had just come into KQUE I think from a sales Job at Kilt 1976 or 77 when I was doing part time week ends on the midnight to six stint. On one of our first overlapping shifts I had to do the seven o'clock news I think that Monday AM on KQUE and I took a lot of pride in my preparation. Mike was opening his show. I did a story off UP or AP on a meeting of Texas DA's' in Corpus. The Harris Country DA had done a speech about organized Crime running rampant in Harris Country...and they had headlined that story. After I was finished and about to exit the broadcast booth. Dave Morris was at the door screaming his head off "did you run a story about organized crime?" " I just got a call from the Sheriff of Harris country who's raising hell about our news cast?" Dave was livid. I guess he owed the Sheriff from a poker game or something. It's as close as I've ever come to decking a boss. Needless to say I was a little startled. Mike was embarrassed from witnessing the dress down. Mike was the consummate professional who took a lot of pride in his work. We didn't work together long but I found him to be an all around good guy. Unfortunately Radio is lacking his kind of talent these days. My sincere condolences to his family. CC
FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Jim, Is Mike Scott (Uncle Scotty) who died recently the same Mike Scott who did nights at KLIF (6-10) in 1967? If so, I was his newsman for over a year there, I wondered what ever happened to him. He was a great talent. I have some "air checks" of him somewhere. Let me know if it's the same person. Thanks, Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."
TRIVIA ANSWER: Paul Anka writes My Way in 1969. It becomes a signature song for Frank Sinatra. But after Elvis Presley dies in 1977, RCA releases his version of My Way from the CBS TV special and album Elvis in Concert. It zooms up to #22 on the national chart and sells over a half million copies. Just a couple of months after his death on August 16, 1977, Elvis makes My Way his very own theme song.
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, I'm gonna drop a line with the Texas Broadcaster's Hall of Fame, suggesting that even though it's past the deadline, Mike Scott's name be added to this year's ballot. I would love for you to put this in the next newsletter, and get a lot of other readers to contact as well. I'm not sure if the hall can bend the rules a little, but I think it's worth the effort for Mike (Belisle) Scott. He was that good of a broadcaster, and a person. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"
GEORGE CARLIN (May 12, 1937-Sunday, June 22, 2008) New Rule: Stop giving me that pop-up ad for classmates.com! There’s a reason you don’t talk to people for 25 years. Because you don’t particularly like them! Besides, I already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days...mowing my lawn.
