ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

NEWS ANCHOR DIES
Steve Lohle longtime news anchor on KQV-1410 in Pittsburgh, PA dies in his Beaver County home from a heart attack on Friday morning, June 20, 2008. The 58-year-old news broadcaster is with KQV for 34 years. Steve begins his long radio career at WQRC FM (99.9) Hyannis-Barnstable, MA where he covers Senator Ted Kennedy's 1969 car accident on Chappaquiddick Island that causes the death of a female aide. Lohle becomes Program Director of WHVY FM (94.7), now WMAS FM, and sister station WMAS-1450 both in Springfield, MA. Steve joins Calvary-owned KQV in his hometown in 1974, just one year before its flip to all news. He is morning news co-anchor for several years then moves to the afternoon spot. No funeral arrangements for Steve Lohle are known at this time.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
Do you know Rock'n'Roll singer Darius Rucker's stage name?

DOG RETURNS TO TV!
One of my favorite TV shows next to Dallas Cowboys NFL football and the original Andy Griffith TV show with Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee and Andy is Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E cable TV. Duane Dog Chapman and his family's real life TV show is the #1 show on A&E but drops out of sight in November 2007 due to outside agitators. We fans experience yet another form of censorship from those who attemp to tear down America's First Amendment rights. Which one of these trouble makers gets all excited about the absurd vulgarities which go on in hip hop? A&E caves in to the pressure put on by these antagonists who call themselves Reverends. A&E suspends Dog the Bounty Hunter in November 2007. These malcontents' only job is to disrupt American society. Anyway, we fans can now have shouts of joy because reruns of Dog the Bounty Hunter begin on June 25th and the brand new show returns for a fifth season this summer on A&E TV. Late Thursday nite I see a promo pop up on A&E that says Dog the Bounty Hunter makes a return engagement on July 15, 2008 with all new programs. Rejoice dear hearts! Cameras roll as we speak. We win one more for the Gipper.

TRIBUNE CUTS TO THE BONE

Newspapers have losses in circulation all across America because the trend is to go to the Internet for instant breaking news instead of the long wait until the next morning for newspapers to arrive at our front doors. Tribune owner Sam Zell has a solution for newspapers' falling profits. It's quite simple. Just fire a bunch of employees and that saves a bundle of money. But like what happens in radio's consolidation why not put out a better product? In the Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle it's difficult to find any news that is hidden between full page advertisements. Zell's solution in Hartford, CT is to slash its newsroom staff by 25% which sends 60 employees out the door. The Baltimore Sun tells 100 employees that their services no longer are needed.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

DENISE COOK [Nick St John's sister] (Dallas, TX) hi jim, i live near dallas which is not near as pretty as san antonio! and by the way, the email address to bruce hathaway is valid. he had sent an email to nick in april and that's where i got his address to notify him of nick's passing on. (and he did answer me yesterday). it was surprising to me that nick died on monday. the drs. had said he still had 4-5 months, so i was planning accordingly. but the good side is that he was suffering terribly with the symptoms of the cancer and his passing was so much better than living through it for more months. i had been going to down to see him about every month or so. last winter, during one visit he told me so many great stories about his time on the radio. we laughed about the outcomes of those stories...time has a way of making those things funny. but i assure you, all his on-air antics, drinking too much, getting fired, etc. was not so funny to my parents at the time!! but, nick told me he had no regrets about his life. he had done the things he wanted to do and did it the way he wanted to do it. he told me he was ok about dying because of the way he lived. all in all, he was a good hearted guy with good intentions. we are planning on a memorial service for july 12th there in san antonio. i'm still trying to find a place to hold it. i can forward that info if you feel that would be appropriate information to include in your web newsletter. nick wrote a book of sorts, about his life and sent some excerpts of it to jay pennington for use on his website about KEXL. have you seen that site? thanks for your response, denise cook

ROBERT (Bobby) REYES (San Antonio, TX) Jim...I am delighted and privileged to get your e-mail. I invite you to contact me anytime as I hope I can contribute anything for your site...at another time, I can pass along to you my background (going on 36 years in broadcasting), what I've done, where I'm going, etc...through a mutual friend and colleague, Mark Carillo, he made copies of a 1974 article from the Express News entitled "Know Your San Antonio DJs". I was able to isolate and scan this brief bio on Nick St.John (Aubrey Cook)...hope it will be of interest to you...when you get the chance, do a Google search and find and look at "Remembering KEXL". Jay Pennington set up this site and it is really cool. Bob Crowley and I have known each other many years and he is a great source of info...will close for now but as mentioned, I will try my best to help you add more goodies to your site...just get in touch w/me and we'll see what happens...all the best to you and hope to hear from you again. Bobby Reyes, Clear Channel Radio

KAREN JOHNSTON (Houston, TX) Hi Jim, I bought a townhouse about five years ago off Westheimer, near Highway 6. I saw the entry from Walt Hammock. I have missed seeing all of those guys. Please give him my email address...as I will be locked out of this one on June 30, due to an old operating system on this computer. Because of tight security, I am not allowed to use the laptop that belongs to XM Radio for personal use or accessing the internet. Thanks so much. Best regards, Karen Johnston

TRIVIA ANSWER: Rock'n'Roller Darius Rucker's stage name is Hootie of Hootie & the Blowfish. From 1994-96, Hootie has 5 singles in the Top 15 with 3 in the Top 10. In 1995, the group wins the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

DAVE LANE (Atlanta, GA) Streaming web site instructions (SIMPLE this time)...either go to the cashboxradio.com web site and click on the "Cashbox Network" button OR you can go directly to the page at:
www.nashvillecountdown.com/cashboxstreamingradio.html and follow instructions. You can probably just click on the red 'Listen' button but if it wants to download a tiny program call 'Streamer' then you must download and install this program. Do this once only and never again. This is what hooks up to our P2P network and saves us hundreds of dollars a month. I've been testing this all day yesterday and today and it works very well and the quality is excellent AND we can handle THOUSANDS of listeners. Right now the automation system is simply tracking lots of oldie...real programming comes with a new dedicated streaming computer. Dave Lane, Cashbox Radio Program Director

ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955) It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.
