HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
CHAPMAN IN CHARGE
Legendary Dallas, TX radio morning voice and programming pro Ron Chapman switches Citadel Country KTYS FM (The Twister 96.7) over to its new 1960s and 1970s-based Classic Hits Platinum 96.7 format. Since Ron retires from radio he seems to be busier than ever. Remember when Sean Connery retires from his role as James Bond after he finishes 1967's You Only Live Twice? Next thing we know Sean bounces right back with a brand new 1983 Bond movie called Never Say Never Again. This is a re-make of James Bond's 4th thriller from 1965 Thunderball. During Chapman's retirement he fills in for another radio legend Paul Harvey in 2008 on his daily syndicated show on ABC Radio Network. Ron does the Paul Harvey newscast in Dallas on ABC satellite Radio Network. In October 2004, when I attend the Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in San Antonio, TX Ron Chapman and his lovely wife join us at our table. He sits right across from me. This is a very special occasion because during high school I and just about all of the citizens of Dallas keep our ears glued to KLIF-1190 as we listen to Ron as Irving Harrigan on the Charlie and Harrigan waker-upper morning show. Those days are when radio is at its finest. Other radio legends on The Mighty 1190 are Chuck Dunaway, Russ Knight (The Weirdbeard), Charlie Van Dyke and Jimmy Rabbitt. Another great pleasure enters my life from 1971-72 as a newscaster on Russ Knight's radio show on Wonderful KBOX-1480 in Dallas my hometown. Russ keeps me in stiches with his charming wit but this time he sits on the other side of a double-paned glass window from my seat in the newsroom. Memories are made of this.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What are the two most popular Rock Operas of 1969?
LAURA IS BACK!
Talk Radio Network Conservative Talk host Laura Ingraham returns to our radios. Laura is away for a month but she's back! For her show opener Obi-Wan Kenobi rings out, If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than ever. In her sly and coy manner Ingraham asks listeners Where have you people been? I have been looking for you for a month. These days very few entertainers have my attention but Laura steals my heart. Hold on! There is one holdout. Always has to be at least one in the bunch. Clear Channel Talk WKRC-550 Cincinnati, OH features Premiere's syndicated host Glenn Beck on the 9 am-noon spot and there he remains. Darryl Parks CC-Cincinnati Director of AM operations puts it bluntly, We just decided to go with Glenn Beck. I think Laura Ingraham not being there for the last month certainly played into it, but we had been thinking about it prior to that. To each his own.
MORE LIBERALS IN NEWSROOMS
Richard Stevenson NY Times' political editor comes clean, there are more political liberals in newsrooms than conservatives. But he denies any NY Times' political team favoritism.

LIZ BELILE [Mike Scott's daughter] (Houston, TX) Please take a moment to read our Dad's obituary that came out in the Houston Chronicle today (and will be online until July 22) and sign the guestbook.
www.legacy.com/HoustonChronicle/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=112009667 Best, Liz Belile, The Reverend Liz Belile, MFA Creative Writing/Poetics, LMT, RYT Anusara-Inspired Teacher (tm), Certified Prenatal and Postnatal YogaMIKE BELILE [Mike Scott's son] (Houston, TX) Wow - it's great to hear from all of you. More details to follow, but Dad (Mike Scott) passed away on the morning of June 6th, 2008 from acute toxoplasmosis. Going through his belongings over the past couple of weeks has served as a reminder of his love for radio and the profound effect it had upon him, and in turn, he upon it. A memorial service will be held soon, anyone interested in attending please feel free to contact me. Mike
ROD TANNER (Houston, TX) Subject: Nick St. John. So sorry to hear of the passing of Nick St. John. I had been trying to get in touch with Nick for the last couple of years. He was a good friend, great guy and super jock. I had many laughs with Nick on the radio and off. Rod Tanner
DICK RALSTON (Denver, CO) Jim: Just a note from a native son from the "Land Of Opportunity", Arkansas. Mike Huckabee did NOT give up his seat as the governor of Arkansas to comment on faux news, He completed his second term last year, then launched his presidential campaign. No big deal, but I just love it when the jock can correct the newsman. That comes from the day, long ago, my P.D. correcting me for saying "nuclear" exactly the same way George W. says it. (KLVI/Beaumont/1964).
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) I haven't spoken with Bobby but about 4 or 5 times in the past decade, but we communicate by e-mail periodically. He and I share the kind of bond that stays, despite the lack of contact. He was at KEXL when I was there in '76, and we shared a lot. He was at KISS in the 80's, and I was part of that 'Clique'. He and Tom Scheppke and I spent a lot of time together back in that decade. I got him a part time job at KENS TV when I was there. 'Course I've been gone from S.A. for a while and we're not as close as should be, but when something comes down, he's there for me. He's the guy with the KEXL cd's, and he's the guy who tipped me about Nick's passing. I've always liked Bobby...the man has always been in my corner. I hold him in high regard. His daughter is all growed up now. She must be in her late 30's by now. He's a good'un. Bob
ROBERT (Bobby) REYES (San Antonio, TX) Hi there Jim, I made a scan of my resume...this is the last one I developed and since I have been working for Clear Channel, I had no real need to update since I think I will be working for WOAI and KTKR until the time comes when I can't work anymore...pretty much the resume says it all about my background, where I've been and what I've done...in 2003, I wound up getting weak and developed Post Polio Syndrome...my walking ability has diminished and I have to use a transport/wheel chair for mobility...a few years ago, a couple of the account executives at the station passed the hat, so to speak, and presented me with an electric wheel chair to use exclusively at the station...while a lot of times I feel like I haven't made anything worthwhile in this wacky business, I feel fortunate that some people DO CARE and are willing to provide some assistance...you have a fantastic website and I truly hope things will go your way and continue to provide this service, and thanks for sending me your latest JRRR...it's interesting reading...will close for now but will be more than happy to provide any info down the line if you need it...have a great weekend! Bobby R.

CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston, TX) When I was posting on my web site a few years ago I used to get very hateful letters from some guy in Corpus Christi. I don’t know his name as his stuff was sent anonymously. I do know he attended the Hall dinner we had in Houston. It was upsetting, but what can you do when you don’t know who it is or why they are so the filled. I learned that block sender was the best option. Chucky
BLAISE PASCAL (June 19, 1623-August 19, 1662) Few friendships would survive if each one knew what his friend says of him behind his back.
