MURPHY MARTIN R.I.P (1925-2008)
Another legendary radio-TV newscaster leaves us. On the 4th of July, 1925 East Texas native Murphy Martin is born in Groveton near Lufkin where he graduates from high school in 1942. In the 1960s, we watch Murphy's dramatic news delivery on WFAA TV CH-8 in Dallas, TX. Martin reports solid news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the trial of Jack Ruby. Murphy has his very own bold style of news delivery that captivates his many viewers and fans. In February 1963, Martin leaves WFAA for the ABC TV late-night news anchor spot in NYC plus reporting assignments but in 1967 he returns home to anchor WFAA TV's 6 & 10 pm newscasts. From 1967-68 so very fortunate to be a DJ on WFAA-820 in my hometown of Dallas, TX and that's when I get to know Murphy. Soon discover that he is a true gentleman and a class guy in every aspect. In 1970 he leaves WFAA TV to head up Ross Perot's United We Stand organization for release of American prisoners of war in North Vietnam. In 1972 he returns home to WFAA TV and remains. In the 1980s Martin is the Dallas Cowboys pre-game and halftime announcer at Texas Stadium. Just before 11 pm on Thursday, July 3, 2008 Murphy dies of heart disease at UT Southwestern University Hospital which is a little over an hour before his 83rd birthday. Murphy Martin leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Joyce Martin; son, Mike Martin; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. LIZ PATRANELLA (Austin, TX) Hi Jim, Like the WWII Generation, it's sad to see our Golden Age of Radio jocks disappearing into that big control room in the sky. I didn't know Nick personally, but he must have been a great guy...he has a lot of friends in the business. I'm sorry, I don't know anyone in Houston who is attending the memorial. Keep up the good work! Newsletter and website look great! Liz
LEE WOODS (San Antonio, TX) I’m deeply saddened by the passing of a great talent and a wonderful human being. Nick was my instructor at Elkins in 1974 and then went on to KTFM. We lost touch after all these year but I do remember many a summer night on the front porch of the AA house across from Playland Park. Nick shared many ‘ON AIR" techniques and philosophies with me. I’ll try to make the July 12th ceremony. May he rest in peace.
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Murphy Martin has passed away...last night (July 3) at age 82, a mere hour and ten minutes shy of his 83rd birthday. Most of you know that he'd been battling heart issues and kidney failure; he had a short reprieve between hospital stays just last month, but apparently went back in a couple of weeks ago. Services have not been announced. There's a nice note on www.murphymartin.com and I posted a recent photo of him (from the June 2007 DFW radio lunch bunch) at
MURPHY MARTIN From 1967-68, while I am a DJ on on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 in Dallas, TX, Murphy Martin is a multi-talented news anchor on WFAA TV CH 8 and radio newscaster on WFAA-820/570. Murphy just comes back home from ABC TV in NYC. Such a fine talented news broadcaster and all around good guy that we find nowhere else on the planet! Martin's death causes a shock-wave that words cannot describe. Rest in peace our dear brother Murphy Martin.
ROBERT [Bobby] REYES (San Antonio, TX) Howdy Jim...here's some BIG news for you...Dan Cook passed away yesterday...go to mysa dot com and you'll see a big article on him. I only met Mr. Cook one time and he was cordial. I'll bet Bob Crowley could pass along good tidbits from working w/him...b-t-w, I wanted to contact Denise Cook, Nick St.John's sister...if you have her e-mail address would you either pass along mine to her for her to contact me, or when you have a chance and if you feel like, give me her address for me to contact her...can't think of anything else right now, other than would like to know if you received my snail mail. I still owe you some photos and that will happen down the line soon...hope to hear from with regards to Denise Cook and we'll chat later. RMR
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: awww... I'm beginning to feel like the $%^&@# Grim Reaper, but here we go again. I really loved the man. I could tell Dan Cook stories for hours. Dan Cook was one of the most amazing men I ever knew. Dan was 'Charmed'. He had more luck than anyone who ever lived. I could go on for hours with Dan Cook stories. Bottom line, he lived a long and full life, and treated those around him with kindness and respect. Any one who knew him is better for it. Bob
RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Wow Jim, a man who was truly a legend is gone. When I was growing up in the 1960's the the ritual at 10pm was to watch the KENS channel 5 news. The anchors Pat Boyette,Bill Shomette,Sometimes a Young Herb booth,Gene Tuck and Finally Chris Marrou. The weathermen Jerry Zimmerman, Ed Combs,Jud Ashmore,a young Herb Booth . The news anchors and weathermen change but Dan Cook waa constant. Gary Delaune came in during the early seventies with His :Mighty Minute men of Memorial High", but Dan Cook would pause for a commercial with a "brief time out'. It wasn't sports unless Dan reported it (my apologies Gary). I visited Channel 5 three times once as a part of my high school group at John Jay, and Dan would come over ask our names talk to us, ordered us pizza. A couple of years later while at San Antonio College and on the air at KSYM, some of us would go to Dan Cook's "Time out". The Parking Lot was painted green and hash marked like a football field. We becmae regulars. Dan would give us constructive criticism (he would tune in and listen to us) I joked to him one day, that I ever wanted to get married, could I do it on the fifty yard line of his club's parking lot. His "response "Son no problem but make sure you punt on first down'. My youth is rapidly disappearing and Dan Cook was a very large part of it. What a man, what a legend. Ray Whitworth
TRIVIA ANSWER: Country group BR5-49 gets their name from comedian Junior Samples' fictional telephone number as a used car salesman on TV's Hee Haw.
WOLFGANG BORCHERT [The Outsider] (May 20th, 1921-November 20th, 1947) A man dies ... only a few circles in the water prove that he was ever there. And even they quickly disappear. And when they're gone, he's forgotten, without a trace, as if he'd never even existed. And that's all.
