HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HEY MR. OILMAN!
Lately, the main subject on everyone's mind is the outrageously high price of gasoline. Reminds me of the old Johnny Cash tune Five Feet High and Rising. The price for a gallon of our gasoline is $4 a gallon and rising faster than a speeding bullet. Remember how we cry when the price per barrel of oil hits $20? Right now it leaps past $140 a barrel. We need some kind of relief fast! Country music star Ronnie McDowell wakes at 3 am last Thursday with a song on his heart. Ronnie says. When I go on tour with my bus, it costs a little over $1,000 now to fill up. On Monday, June 30, 2008 McDowell rushes to a recording studio in Portland, TN. He has another smash on his hands that is if his record label Curb obliges. The name of McDowell's newest recording is Hey Mr. Oilman. It sounds great and the message is quite clear Hey, Mr. Oilman, we sure could use a break...Old glory is cryin', how much more can we all take...Our wallets are getting thinner while yours is getting fat...and me and all my neighbors are mad as h*** about that. If the name Ronnie McDowell rings a bell it's because he is the one who writes and records The King Is Gone right after Elvis dies on August 16, 1977. When I'm behind the mic on KNUZ-1320 here in Houston, TX we just cannot play McDowell's Elvis tribute enough. That's almost the same effect Ronnie's new recording Hey Mr. Oilman has on me. While these words roll out McDowell's new tune plays over and over again and I like it better each time. Curb records needs to get on the ball and release this hot tune. We Americans are desperate for some kind of relief. This neat tune at least puts smiles on our faces while we shell out the gasoline bucks. Just got a wonderful idea. As the oil companies make billions from our billfolds why don't they play Ronnie McDowell's Hey Mr. Oilman in speakers above the pumps?

TRIVIA QUESTION:

PARRIS AFTON BONDS (Dallas, TX) Jim, I, too, remember those idyllic days of Charlie and Harrigan. Ron Chapman has been such an influential presence here in Dallas, as you have been, as well. We Baby Boomers are most fortunate to share the fond memories of DJ's like you and Chapman. Parris Afton Bonds (www.parrisaftonbonds.com/)

LIZ PATRANELLA (Austin, TX) I received an email from Bobby Reyes sent to him by Jay Pennington: 'I just heard from Nick's sister that Nick St. John (Aubrey Cook) sadly passed away this morning (June 23) from a battle with cancer. There will be a memorial service but at this point I don't know the details. Just thought I would pass this along to those who have emailed me via the KEXL page. I believe that Nick was living in San Antonio so there should be further information available. Nick and I had been emailing back and forth this last year and it was fun to get to know him via cyberspace. He really seemed to be a special man. I do feel for Nick and his extended family right now. Our prayers go out to Nick's family and friends. Jay' Today, I received an email from Paul Kirby with details on the memorial service Via Bruce Hathaway: 'I got an e-mail address for Nick's sister. LIZ BELILE [Mike Scott's daughter] (Austin, TX) Please let everyone know that we are grateful to be reading all of these comments about our wonderful, talented, and very much missed Dad, Mike (Belile) Scott. Mike passed away on June 7 after a mighty battle with chronic illness. My brother and I got to spend his last days with him. We are planning to host a tribute event to Dad in Houston on July 19th; please email us if you wish to attend or contribute in some way. I'm sorting through his things and finding airchecks from KILT, demos, looking for more. We of course had to close down his beloved recording studio, which was heartwrenching. Mom (Tookie) spends most of her time in Louisiana, brother Mike and I (Liz, oldest daughter) live in Austin. Mike Jr. is a musician and audio/visual sales rep; the apple has not fallen too far from the tree. Dad also leaves behind a 7-month old grandson, Andrew Bodhi; the comments that I get the most on Bodhi are "He's so happy!" and "I love his voice!" Definitely Mike Scott's grandchild. Please email me if you want info on the upcoming tribute: belile@earthlink.net All the best, Liz Belile

JEFF MCCLAIN (Houston-Cleveland-TX) Jim, so sorry to hear about Mike Scott. I got to know him while working at KNUZ in 87-88. He worked across the hall at KQUE. What a fun guy and a super talent. Mike and I used to have many conversations telling radio stories in the KNUZ/KQUE Coffee Bar. Thanks for letting us know. He will be missed.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Just when we thought things couldn't get any crazier. ABC News Bans Flag Lapel Pin. Yesterday, the brass at ABC News issued orders forbidding reporters to wear lapel pin American flags or other patriotic insignia. Their reasoning was that ABC should remain neutral about 'causes'. Since when is support for preventing our death & destruction some sort of a cause? Since when is patriotism to be discouraged. I urge you to boycott ABC and its sponsors and affiliates. Please forward this to as many as you can.
