ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
NEWSCAST OUTSOURCES
It's just a matter of time that outsourcing hits TV station newscasts, too, but at least this time it remains here in America. NBC affiliate WHO TV CH-13 in Des Moines, IA announces an agreement to produce a newscast for Sinclair Fox affiliate KDSM TV CH-17 in Fall 2008. WHO TV's specially produced newscast airs on Fox KDSM CH-17 during its 9-10pm news telecast Monday through Friday and at 9-9:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Dale R. Woods, WHO Regional VP/GM, says, This is a tremendous opportunity to service central Iowa viewers in this relatively new time period. Mike Wilson, KDSM GM, chips in, KDSM Fox 17 is excited to extend the current half hour of local news coverage for our viewers to an hour-long newscast on weeknights. With the Channel 13 news team and resources we will be able to bring Central Iowa great coverage and more in-depth stories of local community news, sports and weather.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What bandleader is the first jazz musician who receives an honorary degree from Columbia University?
MORE NEWSPAPER STAFF CUTS
By the end of August, 2008 the Chicago Tribune eliminates about 80 of its current 578 positions in its newsroom and reduces its number of published pages by 13-14% each week. And if that's not enough, there's also job reductions in other Chicago Tribune departments. That number of cutbacks is not public information right now. A Chicago Tribune spokesman declines comments on the subject.
HOUSTON RADIO REUNION Time draws near for the 2008 Houston Radio Reunion at Tin Hall on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 2pm. Click www.lifeafterradio.blogspot.com to find out more.
GUARDIAN SELLS OUT TO TRINITY
According to a recent FCC filing. the owner of the small .2 Network, Guardian Enterprise Group, sells its only TV station, WSFJ TV (DMA 32) Columbus, OH, to the ever-expanding Trinity Broadcasting, home of Paul and Jan Crouch's Praise the Lord ministry. Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) is the largest Christian television network with more than 12,500 TV and cable affiliates throughout the world. The general direction of the independent WSFL remains pretty much the same since it already has lots of religious and paid programming but Paul and Jan Crouch have yet another reason to praise the Lord because our guess is that all of those current stock of preachers on WSFJ switch to strictly PTL exhortationers. Richard Schilg is Guardian's CEO. Paul Crouch tends TBN's herd of sheep. From its studios at the Trinity Christian Center in Santa Ana, CA TBN offers all religion all the time.

Susanne joins Lifetime in August 2005 with programming responsibilities on Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women. TOM BIGBY (Dallas, TX/Detroit, MI) I sure hope the Bill Young that posted about life in Lufkin Texas is the same Bill Young of KDOK-KILT. Best Production Person in the Universe...Fame... As a kid out of high school one my first jobs after my hometown radio station in Mansfield, Louisiana was KEES in Gladewater, I remember showing up for work and the first job was moving the tower from West of Gladewater closer to Longview. Years later I bought the station and it never did cover Longview. But I had a dream, (laugh) Bill Young is one of the few radio heroes that I grew up trying to copy their great work that are still around. If Bill reads this, thanks for the inspiration. Tom Bigby, CBS Radio (an old guy still living his dream)
BILL YOUNG (Houston-Sugar Land, TX) Jim...Robert Weathers was sales manager when I was last at WACO (which was actually on two different occasions.) Lee Glasgow was the owner and manager on both occasions...in 1957, I was just out of Hudson high school (country school outside Lufkin), summer of 1957. I was headed to Baylor (going into the ministry, I thought). Art Holt (later a well known radio Consultant) said he could hire me for 9-midnite but he could not wait til fall, needed me to come then! By the time I got there two weeks later, he and the sales manager at the time, Homer Odem, had 'switched' positions. Odem went on to be a long career with McLendon. I left WACO for KOIL in Omaha (morning man), then back to Texas to Tyler and six years at KDOK. Glasgow called and said they had, for the first time, lost the ratings to KWTX and he needed me to help him bring the station back. Time was right so I moved back to WACO...and the "Hooper" ratings were good to us. A year and a half later, the offer from Bill Weaver to move to KILT as PD came. And the rest is increasingly a murky memory...just kidding, it was a wonderful experience for a country boy! Bill, and later Dickie Rosenfeld, were very supportive managers and gave us virtually full reign. Bill Young
KIP ALLEN (Palm Springs, CA) I would love to know what happened to Bruce Hughes. He was my news director at WKRG in Mobile, Alabama in 1978 and really gave me my start in the business. I have many fond memories of Bruce. Kip Allen
COL. ST. JAMES (Houston, TX) Hey Jim, Just a note to wish you and Tejas a very Happy Fourth of July! hope all is well with you both. Talk to you on the radio! Aloha, Colonel St. James (
MIKE CANNON (Houston, TX) Jim, Just a note to say thanks for the mentions in JRRR regarding the reunion. Is Michael Shiloh correct that you live near the Woodlands? If so you are close to me. My offer still stands to get you there if you’d like to come whether you are close to me or not. Let me know. Best, Mike Cannon, Director of Broadcast Operations, Houston Astros Baseball Club (www.knus99.com/links.html) (www.lifeafterradio.blogspot.com)
ED MILLER (Austin, TX) Jim, Great story about George getting his guitar back after it was stolen from him at a Fort Worth club in 1962. Do you know which club it was? I hung out in many of them, being on KPCN back then, and frequently saw George and the Jones Boys play. I'd be fun to know, if you have any idea.
TOM ASWELL Jim, can you tell me the stations owned by Gordon McClendon. I know KLIF in Dallas. What was the station in San Antonio and didn't he owned KEEL in Shreveport? Do you know any others? Tom
TRIVIA ANSWER: On May 16, 1973, jazz pianist/band leader Duke Ellington (April 29, 1899–May 24, 1974) receives an Honorary Degree in Music from Columbia University.

ROY LEMONS (Grove, OK) I rememember the early days of channel 8 Dallas before it was WFAA. It was originally KBTV, and signed on three or four days a week. Sign on was about 5 pm, the early star was Bob Stanford who later owned a large ad agency in Dallas. He starred as the "Frito Kid", a comedy western takeoff on film. Jule Bennell had a cooking showk On channel 5 they had Bob Peters and a dance show in the afternoon and Margaret McBride with a cooking show. I think channel 11 came on later, it was originally KFJZ TV. Channel 4 was owned by Dallas Times Herald. I stand to be corrected on some of this, I was a wee lad of 10-12 living in Gainesville Texaas.
SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE (1772-1834) My eyes make pictures when they are shut.
