REO FLOOD RELIEF
Recent floods in Iowa leave its citizens in quite a quandry. But they pull together to help each other out of the flood water surge that destroys their homes, transportation and personal momentos. Where are the outcries for help from the very vocal social radicals, movie stars and recording artists who scream and yell about hurricane Katrina's aftermath? Well legendary Rock group REO Speedwagon rises to the occasion like true American heroes. On Wednesday, July 16, 2008 REO Speedwagon holds a Ridin' the Storm Out – Floods of 2008 Relief Concert at Prairie Meadows in Polk Country, IA. And if that's not enough, 100% of the money from the event goes straight to the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation to help victims in Polk County. We remember REO Speedwagon Classics: Keep On Loving You (#1-1980), Take It On The Run (#5-1981), Keep the Fire Burnin' (#7-1982) and Can't Fight This Feeling (#1-1985). REO's album Hi Infidelity ranks as one of the best-selling LPs of all-time with sales of more than 10 million copies in the USA alone. REO's most recent album Find Your Own Way Home is their first studio album in 11 years. While we're at it let's cast our votes for REO Speedwagon in the ESPN Battle of the Bands. The winning band has their version ofTake Me Out To The Ballgame as the 100th unofficial anthem of baseball. JRRR salutes REO Speedwagon!

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth, TX) Jim, I was very sorry to hear the news of the passing of Charlie Payne. Charlie and I had over the last few years a number of email exchanges and I was invited to his house in North Dallas to check out some of his radio momentos and I left with part of his vast collection of LP's that he just gave me. I was supposed to go back for a follow up visit but he and I could not make schedules work. He was truly a great guy and a blast to talk to in person. I also have an autographed copy of his book. Take care and we'll talk soon, Bob Tomlinson

DR. CHARLES F. PAYNE (Dallas, TX)
Jim---New Website is "Uptown" amigo. Looks good. Dr Charles Payne

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) For me as well, Jim. Actually his sister emailed me yesterday but didn't give me any details except he had been dealing with cancer and wasn't doing well for the last 3 weeks - and died yesterday morning. I believe Aubrey was living in San Antonio. Jay

BRIAN RODAHAVER (Stevensville, MD) Hi Jim! Do you really know the real age difference between Don Knotts and Francey Yarborough? Inquiring minds would like to know, not just for personal knowledge but for a piece I'm writing. It's very tasteful and respectable. Thanks! BRIAN RODAHAVER

DON KNOTTS dies on February 24, 2006 at 81 at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Don's wife of three years 38 year old stage actress Francey Yarborough is at his side. That's a 43 year age difference. Yes, Don Knotts is a ladies man. Don lies in a $36,000 plot near actress Eva Gabor in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA. Next to Dallas Cowboys NFL football, the Andy Griffith TV show is always my favorite. Without Don Knotts it's just a real good show but with Don as Barney Fife it becomes extraordinarily magnificent. Beyond reproach. Have seen all of the A-G shows over and over for decades and love them more each time. God bless Don Knotts!

LILLIES OHLSSON BENNERSTIGEN (Sala,Sweden) Hello Jim, I´ll welcome all the DJs a.o. to take a look at my website
www.LeeSwing88.se there are lots of useful Country/Western Music info which I feel can be useful. Keep swingin´, Lillies

SALLY WILLIAMS (Brenham, TX) Are you going to the Tin Hall radio reunion? Sounds like a zoo, literally and figuratively. Probably Paul and I will arrive and dazzle folks with the happiest 30+ years of divorce in Houston radio history! Kidding. He is my dear friend.

CLINT WRIGHT (Houston-The Woodlands, TX) Hi Jim: Although I don't think we've met... I've got to connect to you. I've been reading you daily and see that a mutual friend, Walter Hammock just did. Hope to get to meet at the reunion in a couple of weeks. -Clint P.S. I'm former KIKK, KJZS, KKHU, KBXX, KODA, KKRW and a couple of others...

BILL YOUNG (Houston-Sugar Land, TX) Jim...Bill Weaver was the original General Manager of KILT in Houston, after having managed many of the McLendon Stations in Dallas, San Antonio, Milwaukee and other properties. He remained in that capacity, building a staff that included Dickie Rosenfeld as Sales Mgr and Bill Young as Program Director and well known talent such as Chuck Dunaway, Jim Wood, Russ Knight (the Weird Beard), Steve Lundy and Alex Bennett. Weaver left KILT in September 1966 to join Cap Cities Broadcasting. Young describes Bill as tough but always supportive. "So when Bill asked me to help him find a publisher for his 'almost finished' book on the Kennedy Assassination, it was a task that I welcomed (my lack of inherent enthusiasm about yet another Assassination theory not withstanding!)." Bill kept tweaking the book for more than two years, with excitement and commitment in spite of his failing health. As might be expected, the book was in need of some help in editing but It was clear that the project had given him a renewed 'will to live'. He had much help from other friends, the late Don Keyes, longtime Natl PD for the McLendon Stations and Joe Somerset an early PD at KILT who went on to a long and illustrious career with Cap Cities and others. The book is now available online. (
www.tripledoublecross.com) A few weeks after submitting the book for editing, layout and printing, Bill Weaver passed away. First Lieutenant Weaver was buried with full military honors in San Antonio, having received SIX Battle Stars and the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement" in Combat, serving under Gens. George Patten and Mark Clark. After returning home, he graduated MAGNA CUM LAUDE from the University of Texas. His work is now available...please ck out the website and pass it along. His wonderful wife Beverly has taken on the responsibility of seeing his last work have meaning. Bill Young

TRIVIA ANSWER: One of the greatest Jazz trumpeters of the 20th century is John Birks Gillespie. His clownish behavior earns him the nickname of Dizzy.

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
John Pendolino, the morning producer, always takes his comp days and vacation days on Mondays. Who can blame him, cause it's usually a real beating. Most times I don't have to cover for him, but we're down a person or two. Amy Chodroff is out for hip replacement for a few more weeks. Someone else is out too, so here I am, stinking up the joint. I'll be taking some time off next week, with a hope to see my Mom in S.A. I thought of you and KXOL when I first saw the Carlin story. A lot of people rag on him, but when I heard the attached rant, I was convinced the man hadn't lost a step. Don't agree with his anti-Catholic schtick, but I still appreciate the body of work. The man made me laugh, from W-I-N-O Radio to Toledo Windowbox. bc

EDMUND BURKE (January 12, 1729–July 9, 1797) Yonder sits the Fourth Estate and they are more important than them all.
