JO STAFFORD (1917-2008) R.I.P.
Grammy Award winning singer with a sultry voice, Jo Stafford, dies at 90 of congestive heart failure on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in her home in Century City, CA. Jo Elizabeth Stafford comes to life on November 12, 1917 in Coalinga, CA near Fresno where her father works in the oil fields. Jo grows up in Long Beach, CA where she has professional voice training. She sings with Tommy Dorsey's band as a soloist also the Pied Pipers. Both Jo and her band leader husband Paul Weston make good music together. In 1949, her duet with Gordon MacRae on Whispering Hope reaches #4. Jo's single You Belong To Me goes to #1 with sales of 2 million copies. In late 1954 Stafford scores with Teach Me Tonight that hits #15 on the national chart. She is the first female artist to sell 25 million records. During her recording career Jo Stafford has 85 singles on the national chart, nearly a dozen top 10 hits, 65 Top 20 and over 70 Top 30 hits. Jo's husband Paul Weston dies in 1996. Jo Stafford leaves behind her children Tim, a guitarist and record producer, and Amy, a singer. We want to thank our radio friend the legendary Chuck Dunaway for his input on Jo Stafford's marvelous recording career. Both of us are tremendous fans of hers.
TRIVIA QUESTION: This is an easy one. What British Rock group gets its name from the title of a Muddy Waters song? The answer appears below.
NEWSPAPER BOSSES HEAD FOR THE HILLS
On Monday, July 14, 2008 Ann Marie Lipinski, seven year Editor and SVP of the Chicago Tribune resigns. Gerould Kern the new Chicago Tribune editor says in a phone interview with Reuters that another round of job cuts at its papers are on tap as he launches a plan to redo the papers' sizes and looks. Gerould also drafts a new reporter productivity review. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution announces that it slashes 189 jobs which is 8% of its total workforce. The reason? Tough economic times. The Wall Street Journal announces by way of an internal memo that it cuts 50 editing jobs due to strategic reasons. Whatever words the newspapers use they all predict extremely tight conditions are ahead.

Disneyland , we also visited Knotts Berry Farm (another theme Park ) on the Marqui it said Ricky Nelson tonite. I went to the show with fam & Friends the guy along side said there is his mother & brother. I kept jumping out of my seat saying Where where! the lady in the seat in front of me turned around & guess what there was Harriet Nelson & David right in front of me! I wanted to crawl under the seat. We were sitting in the back row & there was a rear exit right there at the last song they very Quietly slipped & no one else even knew it. By the way you know Creedence Clearwater Revival, from El Cerrito Calif, The Drummer Doug Clifford is a 2nd cousin to me! JIM ROSE
DAVID A. DOERR (Biloxi, MS) Jim, Thanks for the e-mail. No, I've never been behind the radio mic. My association with the S.A radio folks is because of a recording I made of KEXL's last three hours in 1977 before it shut down. I sat on that recording for almost 30 years! In 2006/07, with the help of Bobby Reyes, Bob Crowley, Tom Sheppke, Woody Roberts, and others, that recording was professionally edited, packaged and released as a Double CD titled "KEXL Is Dead". Fifty copies were made and quickly snapped up by the folks who worked at KEXL and some old die-hard fans like myself. It was a lobor of love and the minimal cost was only enough to cover reproduction expenses. Recently Bobby Reyes e-mailed me that Nick St John had passed and there was a memorial service planned. I remembered Nick from KEXL and felt I should be there. I'm so glad I did, meeting Nick's family, talking with some S.A Radio's finest, and especially Jay Pennington, the creator of the "Remember KEXL" web site. Please add me to your e-mail as I have been reading them via your site for quite some time. I've attached several pics of what the "KEXL Is Dead" Double CD looks like. Bobby tells me there are no more available. David A Doerr
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim; Ralph Baker has died. He was a fellow MetroNetworks employee, and was assigned to KRLD when I got to know him. Ralph was working in his yard when he had a heart attack. He died as his wife was driving him to the hospital. He was 63. Ralph had quite a career. He was an actor and male model, but he was also a news anchor for KTEN TV in Sherman, in addition to anchoring and doing traffic reports on KRLD. Ralph was one of my favorites. He was always cheerful and positive. He will be missed. Bob
BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, A few days ago I learned from Cindy Kasparian Griffis that her son, Jarrod, had been killed in a tragic accident in January, 2008. Cindy was my afternoon co-host for a decade at KQUE FM in Houston. She is a great talent. I had not talked with Cindy for years and decided to call her after I came back to Houston. Cindy's son and my son were born just a month apart 15 years ago. Our prayers are going out to Cindy and her family. Barry Kilgore
BARRY KAYE (Mason-Art, TX) Well sounds like your love in life is your dog!! mine is called Happy!! I would be very lonely without him, All I got!! Give me your address and me and CC McCartney will pick you up!! You need to go! CC is renting a car, cause my car has 200k miles too!! Lets do it dude!! JOSH HOLSTEAD (Houston, TX) Jim-Yes I will, and no I won't. :0 I'll put down a few of the stations you worked for, as EVERYBODY remembers Jim Rose. (There will be no place to leave your dogs) Or mine for that matter!!! Josh
HOUSTON'S RADIO REUNION EXTRAVAGANZA is Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Tin Hall in far northwest Houston, TX. Roll out the red carpet! Wonder what the nearly 200 radio stars in attendance think when three cool cats by the names of Barry Kaye, C.C. McCartney and Jim Rose arrive in our jet black limousine as cameras flash and fans cheer? Well maybe not exactly like that. Absolutelty cannot wait to mix and mingle with radio friends from our past and present. Many that we like to remember and a few that we definitely want to forget. Nevertheless all of Houston's biggest and smallest names in radio are in attendance. Kind of mindful of my long radio career since 1965. Behind the mic on some of Texas' biggest and smallest radio stations in the largest municipalities and tiniest burghs. Hey Mr. DJ! Play Memories Are Made of This by Dean Martin.
TRIVIA ANSWER: The Rolling Stones name themselves after Muddy Waters' 1950 tune Rollin' Stone which is also known as Catfish Blues.
LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) I thought there was a station, in the Houston area, that was gonna take my show but it fell through. I don't have anyone carrying it that far south. KWKH airs my SINGIN' & SWINGIN' Sunday at 5:00 am and my Gospel Music program"GLORY ROAD" at 6:00 and 8:00 am. Larry
JUDY MCMAHON (Fairfield, OH) I'll try to make this short but ( I won't promise). Our chaplain at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mt.Healthy, Father Celsus Griese, O.F.M. passed away on May 20th of this year. He was a terrific speaker in that he always spoke his mind, in or out of the pulpit. When he died, I remembered that I had made a cassette tape off my radio of an interview with Father Celsus and Jan Michelson and a fellow named Brown. It was about education as he was a teacher at Roger Bacon. Could you tell me what years Jan Michelson was broadcasting in Cincinnati? Probably in the 80's. Fr.'s sister wants a copy. His voice sounds so strong as opposed to the last years of his life, when he was weakening. Thanks so much for any help and I am glad that I ran across this web-site. Judy McMahon
SUSAN KOOIMAN (Pineville, NC) You have a blurb about Anna Koolman. Her name is actually Anna Kooiman. Could you change it please?
MARY KAY ASH (May 12, 1918-November 22, 2001) Sandwich every bit of criticism between two thick layers of praise.
