ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

NEWSWEEK PRESIDENT HITS THE ROAD
Greg Osberg, Newsweek President and Publisher, hastily quits his post. This sudden action leaves the Washington Post-owned Newsweek with no top banana. There also are no plans to reverse its downward trend. The newspaper industry doesn't hit bottom yet but these days the future isn't too bright. What's next? Can it be the death of a major daily journal?

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What are the real first names to original members of Black Sabbath? The answer appears below.

COLUMNIST GETS TICKET

Cops give syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak a ticket on Wednesday morning, July 24, 2008 after his black Corvette strikes a pedestrian in downtown Washington, D.C. A WJLA-TV reporter and crew just happen to spot Novak with a ticket in his hand as he stands in front of a cop car. This proves that not even a member of the Fourth Estate escapes the watchful eyes of the paparazzi.

JOE MARTELLE (Mesa, CO) I'd like you to know my book, Radio Pro-all about how to become a successful radio personality can be previewed on my publisher's website at www.BearManorMedia.com please scroll down the list of book titles, on the left hand side of the page, until you find mine, Radio Pro. Open it and read all about it! I would appreciate any feedback on the book's description. Is there any chance you could post my link on your site? Any help in spreading the word about this special one-of-a-kind book on radio air-talent would be greatly appreciated, Jim. Any questions...just reach out! Thanks so much, Jim All my best and God Bless. Joe Martelle (Former morning-drive radio personality for 41 years: 20 yrs. WROR (MIX) Boston; KLDE Houston; SUNNY 104.3 West Palm Beach; and all nights at WLW Cincinnati, along with several Maine stations) Joe Martelle

J.C. WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Jim, I just read Arthur J. "Bud" Rogers email regarding 102.9 being located in the old Elkins Institute Building. I worked at KDTX-FM 102.9 when it was located in the old Atlantic Richfield Building. We moved the station into a Prudential Building in 1973, I believe. Elkins Institute was on the first floor and KDTX-FM 102.9 was on the second floor. This was before DFW Airport, of course. Employees at the station would automatically pause in conversations every minute and a half or so to allow planes leaving Love Field to fly over the station. We later moved to the old KIXL building on Akard Street. We became KMGC while located on Akard. From the Akard Street location we moved into new facilities built adjacent to T-M Productions. Anyone who hasn't lived through the physical movement of a radio station while keeping it on the air simply hasn't lived! J.C. Webster

PETER TRINIDAD (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #527 My mom and I would love to find out about old favorite weatherman, Jerry Zimmerman? Are you out there Jerry? I remember you from around 1967-1969 years. I was in junior high then but I used to love the weather you used to give. Peter

JAMES (Jim) M. ROSE (El Cerrito, CA) Hi Jim...Wow you really have the inside track on this one, I also was a big fan of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & Rick Nelson. JIM ROSE

SURPRISE, SURPRISE!
What a wonderful surprise to hear from my WFAA-820/570 Dallas, TX buddy from 1967-68, Mike Marshall! During my long radio career since 1964 run across some good folks and not so good ones but Mike is at the top of the first-class list. Marshall and his wife take a couple of months off to go across the big water to Italy for a visit with her relatives. He sends a letter home to us.

MIKE MARSHALL (somewhere in Italy)
Jim, I see you'll be at the reunion Sunday. What a great idea that was. I'm with my wife at her small hometown in Italy. The only thing happening here on Sunday is the Giornata degli Anziani (Old Folks' Day). I see a lot of guys on the RSVP list that will be there. I'm really sorry I can't make it. If they do it again next year I'll be there for sure. Mike Marshall: KPRC (twice), KXYZ, KULF, KQUE, KBME

BEN LAURIE (Dallas, TX) Can't afford the drive to Houston, Jim, though I'd really love to make it. It'll be a blast! I put in just a short time in the market back in 1971 working for KULF in the first floor studios of the Central Bank Bldg on Travis. Bill Bosse was the GM and David Fowler was the News Director for whom I worked. Great guys there. Howard Dupree, Gary Hoffman, Buddy Holiday and both of the McLain boys. Enjoyed talking ham radio stuff and aviation with Hal. We were running pretty good competition with KNUZ, but of course KILT was kicking everybody's b***s. Y'all have fun, ya heah?

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) TOMORROW IS THE DAY!! We'll meet at Boston's Gourmet Pizza, 635/LBJ west of MacArthur, on the westbound service road. This is on the north side of Irving near Valley Ranch. We'll gather around 12:30PM. Same as always, dutch treat--so everyone pays for their own; no formalities or anything, just get caught up with old friends and make some new ones, and eat some good food! Again, that's Friday, July 25 at 12:30PM at Boston's. If you get there early, the reservation's under my name, and they should be seating us by the farthest left wall. Please RSVP to me if you can (or think you can) make it, so I can get a general head count. (Of course, drop-ins are always welcome.) Thanks, and see you all tomorrow! Mike Shannon

TRIVIA ANSWER: The real first names of original members of Black Sabbath are John (Ozzy) Osbourne, Frank (Tony) Iommi and Terence (Geezer) Butler. As far as we know William Butler uses no alias.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Hi, I was thinking KOST was used as calls for KILT-FM at one point in time, but I may be wrong. I know that they were in use in California but I was thinking they also got used in Houston. I noticed that 96.7 KPMZ seems to put more bass into their audio, while KLUV 98.7 goes the other direction and adds more treble. I know some of it is my hearing but when I have the 45 or Lp here to play I can tell that they have played with the audio and not always for the better. KLUV tends to sound tiny at times too much for my taste. I see 95.9 now has a station in Garland. I was also getting KKAJ, Ardmore and a station from elsewhere with Religious programming that came in for a while before disappearing. The fun of trying to catch DX... Sunday, I attended Eastminster Presbyterian Church the music director, Fred Watkins did a beautiful solo of Blessed Assurance. I later mentioned my interest in radio and he said he knew Bud Buschardt (sp). I bought a copy of the ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook 2008, since I need to brush up and upgrade my amateur license to General from Technician which is what I have now as an amateur license. I think a good link to add to your page would be FM Atlas. I also have used BRSRadio to find stations to listen to on the web, etc. Charles George

WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY, Jr. (11/24/1925-2/27/2008) The Internet is the happiest intellectual, journalistic and educational development in history.
