ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
100 DAYS TO NOVEMBER 4TH ELECTION DAY

TV NEWSCASTS DISAPPEAR
The Journal Broadcast Group shuts down its daytime newscasts from the Green Bay-Appleton, WI studios of NBC WGBA TV CH 26 on Monday, July 14, 2008. Jim Thomas, Journal Broadcast Group corporate marketing VP, announces that among those to leave the building are news anchor Dean Leisgang and reporter Lacey Crisp plus some behind the scenes employees. Also, four full-time positions and one part-time position no longer exist. Three full-time positions become part time. Morning reporter Allison Sossaman switches to General Assignment reporter and weekend anchor. These moves eliminate NBC26 News Today (5 to 7 am) and NBC26 Later Today (9 to 10 am and noon to 1 pm) from the weekday schedule. Thomas further elaborates Newscasts and a talk show from Milwaukee's WTMJ now air in those spots. Like many businesses, not just television stations, who are faced with changing economic conditions, we continue to evaluate the business, We felt we could make this move in the mornings and continue our focus on building the 5, 6 and 10 pm newscasts, where we have been more successful than we have in the morning with strictly local content.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
How does the name Marshall Tucker Band come to existance?

MARVIN BROWN (Aurora, IL) Hello, My name is Marvin Brown and I would like to share my memory about KBOX 1480. I am writing a surprise memoir collection for my parents. After writing and editing many memoirs for this collection over the years, I'm finally near completion of my first volume to present to them later this year. One particular memory is the KBOX 1480 jingle that has been stuck in my head for the past 40 years: "Kay-Bee-Oh-Ehhhhhhhx...1-4-hhhhhh!" Of course, I'm not able to sing to you the pitched melody that goes along with it. It's a very pleasant memory for me, though, because I remember my mother listening to this radio station daily when I was young. Out of curiosity, I entered KBOX 1480 in my web-browsing bar and surprisingly came across the very interesting history data in your website! How is it possible for me to get a copy of this jingle recording that I have been remembering for so long? I would love to let my mother and father listen to it again! How can I find out who the radio announcers were for KBOX between 1962 and 1970? Enclosed is an excerpt from my memoir in regards to this radio station: I Remember...Title: Mama Listens to AM Radio Approximate Date: Around 1968 Location: In or Near Fort Worth, Texas I'm guessing that I was around five years old, maybe six. Mama listened to KBOX 1480 (I can still hear the music and the words in my head extremely clearly! If you ever ask me, I’ll sing it to you. It lasts about 7 seconds.) A commonly heard commercial on this radio station was: "Fort Worth National, that’s myyyy bank!"... Regards, Marvin Brown

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Jim, Notice this note in you latest web site; "J.C. WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Jim, I just read Arthur J. "Bud" Rogers email regarding 102.9 being located in the old Elkins Institute Building. I worked at KDTX-FM 102.9 when it was located in the old Atlantic Richfield Building. We moved the station into a Prudential Building in 1973, I believe. Elkins Institute was on the first floor and KDTX-FM 102.9 was on the second floor. This was before DFW Airport, of course. Employees at the station would automatically pause in conversations every minute and a half or so to allow planes leaving Love Field to fly over the station. We later moved to the old KIXL building on Akard Street. We became KMGC while located on Akard. From the Akard Street location we moved into new facilities built adjacent to T-M Productions. Anyone who hasn't lived through the physical movement of a radio station while keeping it on the air simply hasn't lived! J.C. Webster." I was teaching broadcasting at Elkins then, and working part-time news at KLIF, and that was when the Texas Tower sniper happened, I remember we tried to do a news report on the shooting, but not very well. Those are very grey memories. Names are gone, and most of everything else too. I mean, when you are almost 70 years old, the mind does not recall very well. Anyway. Have a great day. Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."

TRIVIA ANSWER: Southern Rock group Marshall Tucker Band's name comes from the owner of the band's rehearsal hall, Marshall Tucker. Their biggest hit single is I Heard It Through A Love Song which rings #14 in Spring 1977. Does any radio station play that great tune anymore?

DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX)
Hi Tejas (and Jim too!) That's fantastic that JRRR is getting so many hits and growing. There's definitely an opportunity to add advertising to the website. Who hosts your site? Mine is through Network Solutions and they have all sorts of advice and links for advertising which I'll check out when cmtcountry.com gets going a little better (translation: when I can find the darn time to keep up with it!) I get my notice via email as soon as the next JRRR comes out and never miss it. It's always nice to read notes from guys who were working in TX while Dad was there (and seeing a few familiar call letters) but even better, you have a knack of getting news up that I'd have otherwise missed. I'm just starting to research the whole "ads" thing...any research I come across, I'll be sure to pass on. Give some sherbert to Tejas from "Uncle Dean!" Later, Dean (

DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Hey Jim, Do you think Dan Rosen wants to sign Dan Rosen? Actually, I go to Dan Rosen's home town of Melbourne about once a year for my university work. Maybe I should look him up (if he's not in New York). I could introduce him to a punk rock band fronted by my son Daniel Rosen. It's called "Bitter End." They're currently on a month-long tour of Europe. They play NY once in a while, so maybe Dan and Daniel can do a joint gig. Hope all's well with you. Best, The other Dan

MOSES DRUXMAN [son of the late Cal Druxman who remains the finest radio GM in my entire career] (DFW-Azle, TX) Friends and Family, I am a member of the International Order of DeMolay. DeMolay's are easily explained as Junior Free Masons. Young men ages 12 to 21 are welcome to join DeMolay. On Saturday July 5th 2008, I will be installed as Master Councilor of my DeMolay chapter. Master Councilor is the same as a President of an organization or if you are familiar with Masonry it is equal to their Worshipful Master. I just wanted to share this will all of you. If you would like to learn more about DeMolay you can go to
www.demolay.org or www.texasdemolay.org. Sincerely, Moses Druxman

ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Jim, In reference to the recollection of Charles George about KILT's FM sister station in Houston. There was a time when the KOST calls were parked on the 100.3 frequency here in Houston (mainly in the 60's). There also may have been another set of calls on that frequency (other than KXAS) for a time. And yes...I believe Gordon McLendon moved the KOST calls from 100.3 here in Houston to an FM in L.A. YOGI BERRA (1925-p) The future ain't what it used to be.
