AMERICA'S SATELLITE RADIO COMPANY NAMES ITS NEW EXECS
The inevitable is now reality. XM and Sirius satellite radio joins hands as one but our government insists this is no monopoly. The new name of America's only satellite radio company is Sirius XM. Wonder how many heated words in the conference room lets one name come before the other? The senior executive team includes five members with one from XM and four from Sirius. And here are the winners: Dara Altman (EVP/CAO); Patrick Donnelly (EVP/General Counsel); David Frear (EVP/CFO); Scott Greenstein (Entertainment and Sports President) and James Meyer (Operations and Sales President). The top banana Mel Karmazin, Sirius XM CEO, issues a memo to employees, I am pleased to announce the appointment of the senior executive team for the new company ... These executives will comprise my executive committee and report directly to me: Please join me in congratulating these individuals who have helped build this industry and should give us all great confidence in the future of our company. I look forward to naming additional members of Sirius XM Radio’s management in the near future.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Where does Rock group Pink Floyd get its name? The answer appears below.
AUGUST 16, 1977
This date shall live on in infamy with me because it's the day that I speed west on 1-10 for the new KIKK FM mid day DJ position. Chris Collier is the KIKK FM Program Director who brings me onboard and makes all kinds of wonderful promises. Also on that fateful day - August 16, 1977 - while I motor west on I-10, scan the AM dial to find KIKK-650. Think I hear the words that Elvis Presley dies. Oh no! But it's true. So always remember that day of the year as the time that I move to bigger and better things on KIKK FM but we lose our favorite singer and entertainer who is like a part of our families. Both KIKKs still broadcast from old hurricane tested 2-story building in Houston's far eastern corridor of Pasadena, TX where its main significance is proximity to Houston's giant Ship Channel that leads to the Port of Houston. Pasadena also has some great rodeos and gun shows, too. The brand new 2-story building is under construction on Gulfton in Houston's bright and shiny southwestern area off I-59. When the new construction completes both KIKKs move into new headquarters and no longer simulcast. KIKK-650 is the original legendary Country radio station for Houston but our city outgrows its 250 watt daytime only operation. KIKK FM brings a strong 24 hour Country music operation with top flight DJs. On the very first day to broadcast from the new location the powers that be select me to be the first voice listeners hear on both KIKKs. We begin with KIKK FM in its new control room. After that I go down the hall to the new KIKK-650 control room. Now both KIKKs are in a brand new building with great new equipment in our city's hot place to be - Southwest Houston. Next week is the annual Elvis adulation Week in Memphis, TN with countless celebrations of The King's music and mystic. 2008 brings a new addition of Elvis and Priscilla Barbie doll sets with only 198 available for sale. We ask what will they think of next? Out of all the Elvis memorabilia this is way below the bottom of my want list but it does go to show that even in his death Elvis Presley lives on!

He was son of singer Vic Damone, now RET in Fla. Can anyone help locate him now? Did you know Odey & Glen @ KBUC story that I sent ystdy?? I'll share some personal radio info at later date. Thx...newslwtter is teriffic indeed! Bob Grant
ARTHUR J. Bud ROGERS (Springfield-Joplin, MO) I did get to spend 22 years altogether in broadcasting. I would still be doing it, but the last station I worked for sold and the new owners didn't want any of the old staff. It was a Christian station and the new owner had some 'different' ideas. He was willing to keep us if we worked for him for nothing. As it turned out, the station is now operated by remote control from almost 300 miles away...no local building except for the metal building that houses the transmitter and satellite equipment at the tower site. I guess the public file is in the city library. I was good and I'm not being conceited. It was work that I enjoyed. I wasn't necessarily out for the 'public profile', I just enjoyed sitting behind a mike and doing commercials and news. I still have my 'radio' voice. People still comment on the way I talk. I'm conservative and couldn't stand to work with the music nowadays. I could do Gospel music or Inspirational...but certainly no 'hard' contemporary of any genre including Christian. I actually don't listen to much radio and tv for me is extremely rare. Wish I could go back and re-live some of those days. I didn't make a lot of money...but I was content. Broadcasting was the favorite thing I've done. I manage an office now. I have made some new friends in Jacksonville, TX (south-east of Dallas)...through Southern Gospel music via Nashville, TN.
JOHNNY SHANNON (San Antonio, TX) Greetings Mr. Rose, I have a great Nick story to share. Wanted to get his approval since it's pretty extreme, which is why I asked you to connect us recently, upon seeing his entries in JRRR. You'll remember he acknowledged and thanked us in your web column, but never wrote. Little did we know all he has been going through. Such a shame. Would like to talk with you first, then maybe submit. So...if you would, please, send an email to let me know of some approx time to call you this weekend, and we can talk. Meanwhile, hope all is well with you. JS
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, let's put KNUZ AM 1090 back on in Bellville. I can ask Barry Kaye to download his show to KNUZ. I can ask John Steel. We can ask Dr. Niel Frank and Doug Johnson to help us on the weather. I can ask Mark Stevens and Jim Pruitt to work with us. I sure did appreciate the promos they did for me for KNUZ when I called them one in 1999 morning. John Lander and Ken Hoffman. When I was with Mac Haik Ford on the Katy Freeway in August 1988 or August 1989 I sold Ken Hoffman his very first new car. A Mustang. Along with you and I and others maybe when can have some fun with this. How about Bobby Brock and Lee Douglas from th late '60's WFAA days. I think we will turn heads for a 250 Watt AM daytimer. Don't you? Roy E. Henderson I think would like to find someone for KNUZ AM 1090 Bellville. I'm ready to return to Cat Spring, Bellville, Kenny, Raccoon Bend, New Ulm, Industry, Texas. I know a very attractive young lady at KCCY in Colorado Springs that will give us a great looking smile on the air and billboards. Leslie Wayne Hodges

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I watched an interesting film from Iran: Children Of Heaven. A boy loses his sister's shoes, so they trade his shoes out with each other so she can go to school. The movie made me grateful for a number of things. I would highly recommend the movie to others if they get a chance to see it. When I was little I loved to play chess. I would go to Parkdale Park and play the other children. I even won at the Recreation Center for the Park twice, 1st Place. I thought I was really a great Chess Player. Then when I went to ETSU, I played some guys at the University Christian Center AKA Wesley Foundation and I quickly learned the truth. Worse they had a tournament and I did not place the first round...Tropo was in so was able to hear this morning and this afternoon a few FM stations not always heard: 95.5 from Waco; KNUE 101.5; a station with Country was heard on 105.1 but not enough to be sure of who it was. I am enjoying being able to hear better again thanks to my new hearing aides. I hope everyone takes care of their hearing. The summer before College, I worked for a Pancake House across from the Coca Cola Bottling Plant on Lemon, at the time KNBN-TV had come on the air operated by the Behrians(sp), a UHF operation that did not last. I briefly got to meet one of their staff when cleaning a table. Unfortunately, I lasted only a week at the restaurant. Charles George
