ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

POPULAR CONSERVATIVE VOICE IS SILENT
A sudden and immediate retirement from the media comes from popular Conservative columnist and political observer Robert Novak . This is quite a shock to his many loyal fans. Doctors diagnose the longtime Chicago Sun-Times columnist and former CNN commentator with a brain tumor. Just over a week ago Robert becomes suddenly ill while he vacations with his family on Cape Cod. Reports tell us that Novak begins immediate radiation treatment and chemotherapy. The 77 year old Novak is a 25 year charter member of CNN where he co-hosts Evans and Novak for many years. During most of its 25 years on the air he is the Conservative voice of CNN cable TV news network's Crossfire. Since 1967 he and Rowland Evans do the Evans-Novak Political Report with Robert as editor. JRRR sends special prayers for Robert Novak's quick physical recovery and that he soon returns to inform us with his keen views on American bureaucracy,

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What Beatles 45 rpm single record stays the longest on the national charts? The answer appears below.

CLEAR CHANNEL BARGAIN BASEMENT SALE

Appears that Clear Channel has a basket-case of 60 radio stations that it must liquidate as part of its deal with the Department of Justice before it goes private. This involves several important radio properties: KYRK FM (The Rock of New Orleans 104.1) New Orleans-Houma, LA; WAKS FM (Cleveland's Hit Music Channel 96.5) Cleveland-Akron, OH; Alternative WURH FM (104.1) Hartford-Waterbury, CT and Alternative WJRR FM (The Rock Station 101) Orlando-Cocoa Beach, FL are just a few. The multibillion-dollar Clear Channel buyout closes the last week of July 2008. CC places some of its radio stations in what they call the Aloha Station Trust to meet FCC ownership rules. On Monday, August 4, 2008 CC releases the list of the stations that move to the Trust that Jeannette Tully controls. Remember the 1950s and 1960s Classic TV game show, Who Do You Trust? Do you recall the name of its host? Aha! It's Johnny Carson. That's pre-NBC's Tonight Show days. In 2007, when CC buys KLOL FM (101.1) it switches Houston, TX's 30 year legendary Album Rock station to music from south of the border down Mexico way. Creates quite an stir with us loyal Classic Rock listeners but we have no control over the situation. Maybe a new owner sees the light and brings back the Bayou City's Album Rock station along with its great DJs but we do not hold our breath. Another popular Houston radio station is in the shuffle: Hot AC KHMX FM (Mix 96.5). What's at hand is CC either sells off or exchanges Classic Rock WOFX FM (92.5) & Adult Album Alternative WNNF FM (Radio 94.1) Cincinnati, OH along with the two Houston radio stations to comply with the government's ruling. Mindful of a huge basket full of radio stations with a mad rush of buyers' hands that reach and grab everything in sight. Does this bring back a sliver of hope for America's terrestrial radio's return to glory? That word terrestrial only becomes a hot topic since the arrival of the Land of the Free's two satellite radio companies. But here in the summer of 2008 they join hands as one to create a new radio cartel which puts an end to its free trade.

DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, It never ceases to amaze me what the government these days considers a monopoly, the XM and Sirrus merger making that entity the only satellite radio network out there and without competition (the definition of monopoly?) Meanwhile a couple of years ago the powers that be decided against the merger of Direct-TV and Dish Network because in their opinon THAT would create a monopoly, despite the fact the two satellite programming companies compete against cable and phone system networks for the same audience. That merger would not have actually been a monopoly, just another delivery source freely competing against the cable and emerging monolithic phone system program delivery services such as Verizon. Methinks someone making decisions concerning broadcasting and the free market should occasionally consult a dictionary! Then again...the 24 hour Elvis Channel on Sirrus radio (and on Dish Network) will be available on the newly combined channel, just in time for Elvis Week! Thankyaverrymuch! Dean (www.cmtcountry.com) (http://cmtcountry.com/)

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hi Jim. The transmittor to WDJO-AM is located in Florence, Kentucky (And it says Florence on it's station ID) but the radio station studio is located in the Queensgate area near downtown Cincinnati. Yes it is an Oldies Radio Station, and is the new home of both Andy Furman & Paul Harvey. I don't know what day he returned (maybe you could investigate) but Paul Harvey is once again reading the "Rest of the Story". He had been off the air several months due to pnemonia, and then after briefly returning to the air, his wife Angel died. Anyway he's definitely back on the air! Thanks Jim! Mary Lynn Knochelman

BLAKE LINDSAY (D/FW-Addison, TX) I dreamed about working with 104.1-KRBE in the eighties, however I didn't want to break away from KTFM in SA. I was treated well there, and enjoyed my four year tenure very much. I really loved hearing KRBE when the trop pulled that huge signal with the best processing I had ever heard right into my living room. There is now a 104.1 in Pearsall Texas, sixty miles from San Antonio. KRBE doesn't blast in like they used to, with that nearly new closer class C1 signal in the way. The summer atmosphere sure does some fun things to FM in July especially. On KISS-FM, I got calls from hundreds of miles from our seventeen hundred feet stick. I received letters and calls from as far away, as Wisconsin. Hope you and Tejas are staying cool today Jim. We have a sunny 97 degrees right now. That electric bill is getting ready to scream at me this week. Talk with you soon Jim. Your Friend, Blake, Blazin' Blake Productions: Hearing is Believing! (www.blazinblake.com

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim...Mike Hartman here. As I read "JRRR", I sure wish I would have pursued broadcasting. I'm maybe one of the few, if not the only, recipient of "JRRR", that isn't in the business. As much as I love music, it brings back some great memories, when I read about "DJ's" who were popular in my area...especially from the 60's and 70's. I used to drive my dad's '62, four door, Bel-Air (Classie, huh?) around Fort Worth, looking for girls. and then, if I got lucky, what would be more impressive than bench seats with a three in the column? And the radio?...Presets on KFJZ, KXOL, and KLIF. Bad thing...the darker it got, the weaker KLIF's signal got. While I was out "Exploring", you "Jocks of the platter" were hard at work.Thank you all very much! And Jim...Thank you again for "JRRR"...and imagine...That's three times a week!

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Beatles Hey Jude reaches #1 in 1968 with over a half-million in sales and enjoys the longest time on the charts at 19 weeks .

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
Hi Jim: I just wanted to add to the chorus of Bud Buschardt and Jim Weaver about the "Retro Radio" on KMNY 1360 in the DFW area and streamed on Thehificlub.net website. It's Mike Shannon's baby and it give us veterans a chance to do "real radio", CONsultant and commercial free. Jim Thomas is back to doing 70's on saturday afternoons and John Lewis (who used to be on KXOL 1360) plays traditional Jazz when Jim has to be away. Randy Carlisle also plays "Real Oldies" from the 40's to 1969, rounded off with Chad Hoker doing morning drive playing cuts from the 80's and a replay on mid mornings, plus the rest is Real (not repetitious) classic rock. Mike hosts the Hi Fi Club on sundays at 12noon and I come over across the parking lot from KKGM (where I do sunday mornings) and help him co-host it. In addtion, all of "Retro Radio" 1360's jingle packages, sweepers, bumpers are Produced by Doyle King, Jim Thomas and myself. We did them for free due to our love and passion for "REAL" radio. No one is getting paid for any on air work. (not much different than today's radio in that respect ). The big regret is, it's only temporary when "Rational Radio" takes over, however maybe, just maybe, some PD, Programmer or station owner will realize we are on to something and will ask Mike to contact them. The positive response has been tremendous, especially from Non-radio personnel, listeners actually putting up the Ipod, going to TheHificlub.net website or radio and tuning us in. Imagine that! Ray

EMILY BRONTË (July 30, 1818-December 19, 1848) I am now quite cured of seeking pleasure in society, be it country or town. A sensible man ought to find sufficient company in himself.
