SHAFT DIES!
Singer-songwrier-actor Isaac Hayes dies at 65 years old. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reports that a family member finds Isaac near a treadmill on Sunday, August 10, 2008 but he does not respond. About an hour later, doctors at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, TN pronounce him dead. The cause of his death is unknown. Hayes' Theme From Shaft wins both Academy and Grammy awards. Isaac raps before there are any rappers. Fondly remember Isaac Hayes in Rockfold Files when he always calls James Garner's character Rockfish and not Rockford. Isaac sets the pace for smooth talkers like Barry White. In 1997, Hayes is the voice of Chef on the animated TV show South Park. Prayers go out to the Hayes family in their time of grief.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What do Rock groups Ironhorse, Brave Belt, BTO and The Guess Who have in common? The answer appears below.
ANOTHER BIG CITY NEWSPAPER OFFERS BUYOUT
The latest in a string of big city newspapers to offer its employees buyouts is the San Francisco Chronicle. At least 125 employees receive the chance of a buyout before the end of 2008 prior to possible employee ousters begin the beguine. Frank Vega, publisher, president and CEO of the S-F Chronicle, says, Obviously, we're not the first newspaper to be affected by the continuing downturn in advertising. We are hopeful that by opting for our employees to voluntarily sign up for buyouts we can avoid any type of layoffs going forward.
UNEMPLOYED JOURNALISTS HEAD FOR INDIA
America's big city newspapers cut to the bone but India's economy grows in leaps and bounds. Medibistro reports that India's journalism jobs do not fade away but instead become abundant as each day passes. We know all too well that many of America's support and technical staff jobs travel overseas to India but its economy diversifies beyond tech and outsource employment. Is India the new land of opportunity?
POLICE SIGN OFF
Rock group The Police get back together for the first time since their appearance Amnesty 86 for their swansong concert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, August, 7 2008. The show opens with Cream's Classic Sunshine Of Your Love. Sting’s daughters join in on Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. The Police play 150 dates on their final reunion tour and gross over $358 million. The tour is on their new DVD Certifiable.
LETHAL WEAPON 5?
Can it be that movie stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover team up for a fifth film adventure? Reports come in from Hollywood, CA that the dynamic duo negotiate for Lethal Weapon 5. Remember back? This is ten years after they release the fourth exciting chapter in their fast action enterprise. In 2007, Richard Donner, who directs all four of the previous Gibson/Glover adventures says that he's ready Teddy to do another film as long as Mel agrees. A source tells British newspaper the Daily Star Lethal Weapon 5 is a go. Mel and Danny are back. The script is fabulous!

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Jim, I never got an email from you. I'm sorry for the misconception it might have caused. Bruce Hathaway and even my own brother have told me that I didn't get their emails. I have no idea why this happens. I always answer emails promptly so if you don't hear from me it means only that I never received your email. I remember you from San Antonio but we never worked together there. You had just parted KBUC when I joined them in 1969 or 1970. I saw you briefly when I started working for KENR the second time in 1982 when they were still in Greenway Plaza. Is this about the way you remember it? Anyway, I would be happy to include you in my correspondence if you wish. Sorry about the misunderstanding. George
BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, Enjoyed being with you too. You are right about all the stories from behind the scenes that radio people can tell. I had lunch with Bill Cherry who used to write for the Galveston newspaper and did some radio-TV stuff. I was telling him that a book of miscellaneous jock stories would really be great. I’m reading Chuck Dunaway’s book now. He tells some fascinating stories about stations we knew and loved. Hope it is not another decade before we get together again. Sorry for the delay in answering this note. This is my school computer that I can access only on campus. (I haven’t figured out how to do it otherwise.) Bud
JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Hi Jim - I just wanted to correct my friend Roy Wentworth - er, ah - Ray Whitworth on referring to me as Jim Weaver in his note to you about Mike Shannon's "Retro Radio" at the old KXOL 1360 spot here in D/FW, TX. It's actually me - Jay Weaver (D/FW - Hurst, TX). And, oh yes, Roy - er, Ray used to be my friend! Many kudos to Mike Shannon for his format innovations with "Retro Radio". It was a pretty darn nice format, we had allot of fun and the positive reviews just keep coming in! I think, as a group, including even Ray, we would all welcome a permanent home with the "Retro Radio Format". Jay Weaver (D/FW-Hurst, TX)
DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, You've got a lot to be proud of both in your radio career and for your work on JRRR. I think you've definitely made an impact with JRRR as there's not another site I know of that has brought together more old-time radio guys than yours and you can tell from the majority of responders that it's certainly appreciated. Heck, I've gotten more news from your site more often than from my own homepage, so I read every column religiously! You belong in the TX Radio Hall of Fame and we need to get some kind of grassroots effort going to get you in there. Let me know how I can help! (
TRIVIA ANSWER: Randy Bachman is singer and guitarist in in all four of these Rock groups: Ironhorse, Brave Belt, BTO and The Guess Who.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Be Bop. Hi, As usual great column. T. S. Monk was great; however; I think one performer was also instrumental and that was Charlie Christian. I think every guitarist after hearing him knew they would need to practice, or put away their instrument for good. It is interesting to that he was in a group with T-Bone Walker. Unfortunately they were gone from the scene when I got interested in Jazz and Blues but not their influence. I still have a copy of Solo Flight with Charlie Christian and a lp recorded at Mintons with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonoius Monk. I like the work of Thelonius Monk's son. I use to enjoy listening to Pat Patterson, Jazz Workshop, Sundays on KFAD. He talked about the music in an educated manner and not just played the recordings. I am getting use to my new hearing aides, I don't feel as bad seeing that my favorite weatherman in a newspaper ad mentions wearing hearing aides. My mother let me know I needed hearing aides but I thought no way... They tested me and I could not hear a signal word on the list, then when I went to a booth I was able to copy 90% with headphones. I hope everyone here takes care of their hearing and vision considering I have had problems with both. This morning on my Sangean ATS-818, I was hearing Voice of Indonesia on 9525, there is not much on shortwave like there use to be but there are still interesting stations to hear. I once got to meet Bob Stewart when he was with KSAX 970 in the Quadrangle, I visited with another friend in radio. Last night I heard a station on 1070 with a talk show, but it faded just as ID time approached... Being the child of a librarian takes it toll, I was thinking if we in Dallas had to pay for the use of Mockingbird then Highland Park could pay for use of streets in Dallas. I find it interesting how they identify with Dallas until Dallas has a need. 73, Charles
J. R. KENNEDY (Houston, TX) I heard that an Amber Alert had been issued for "little Edouard" he was missing for several hours
BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) The world here was abuzz at the approach of tropical storm Eduardo. All was quiet at my place. At 3AM today I went out on my deck and looked up to see a completely clear sky with lots of stars. By 6AM it was overcast and sprinkling. I went back in to catch the latest weather updates on TV. To hear them tell it the world was coming to an end. "...and now we get the latest update on the massive storm Eduardo from our reporter, Chicken Little, in the middle of the onslaught...""Oh no the Sky is falling, the Sky is falling!!!! RUN!!!!!"" This is another fine example of the freaking fear mongering yellow journalism of our beloved but stupid media. bk
AESOP (620 BC-560 BC) Appearances often are deceiving.
