HAVE A SAFE AND WONDERFUL LABOR DAY WEEKEND

GMA WEATHER GUY IN CAR WRECK

Just after the Friday edition of ABC TV's Good Morning America its weather guy Sam Champion is a passenger in a car that heads out on the Long Island Expressway on his way to eastern Long Island when all of a sudden just before 11:00 am in the blink of an eye a tractor-trailer rig jackknifes and strikes their car almost head-on. The 47 year old Champion describes what he sees to WABC TV CH7 Eyewitness News, I was looking down and Brian, the driver said 'Look out.' He hit the brakes really hard. You could see the front of the truck coming at the car. I remember thinking, 'This is bad. This is bad. This is really, really bad. Champion and his driver wear their seat belts and suffer only minor scrapes and bruises. Before GMA Sam is weather anchor on Eyewitness News from 1988 until 2006. Sam is the weather anchor on Good Morning America since August 2006. On Sunday, he leaves for the Gulf Coast to cover Hurricane Gustav.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
How does Rock group AC/DC get their name?

2008 GREAT ESCAPE CANCELS
Due to what promoters say are lower than expected ticket sales the Aussie 2008 Great Escape Festival is a wash out. Big name artists from the USA, UK, Canada and local Australian talent are features. Not even an offer of free on-site camping at the Newington Armory is enough to bring in enough ticket sales. But the sideshows do remain. The two day festival during the weekend of October 4 and 5, 2008 coincides with the Sydney tour date of the Australia wide Parklife music festival. Organizers possibly now regret that they move The Great Escape from the April date of the previous two years to the new October long weekend. Festival organizers issue a statement, We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have made the festival such a success in previous years. We’d also like to whole heartedly apologise to the bands, artists, agents, managers, suppliers, sponsors, media supporters and festival goers that have been let down by our decision. The decision to cancel has not been an easy one for the team behind the event. Full ticket-holder refunds are available at their point of purchase.

HARRY MARTIN [Happy Hare] (San Diego, CA) Jim, this is a good way to re-introduce me to the Texas radio crowd. CONNELL MILLER (Bella Vista, AR) Hi Jim, It will once again be nice to receive your JRRR newlsetter. It's heck when you have to go from one internet provider (and their own e-mail service) to another, as I have lost about 1,500 sent/received e-mails that I was not able to move over to my new account on Yahoo in time! Bella Vista is at the north end of northwest Arkansas' own "Metroplex" (Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, and then Bella Vista). Originally started as a retirement community in the early 1960s, it has transformed from an unincorporated village to full-fledged city status in the last couple of years. Still full of retirees, but with many more working stiffs of all ages moving here (like me, even though I'm at that "golden" retirement age of 65, I still can't afford to...), it has really upset the demographic applecart. Situated in the Ozark mountains, Bella Vista has eight lakes, seven golf courses, and a population of 25,000 spread out over 50 square miles. Clean air, low crime, very affordable housing, and very quiet as the bulk of the traffic and business are located along highway (71 which runs through the unpopulated middle of Bella Vista. We also have a nice local radio station, KBVA 106.5 FM which plays a lot of the mellow oldies (but lots of other choices in this area if one needs a little Hank Sr. Hank Jr., Stevie Ray, Old 97s, Classic Rock, Conjunto, metal, Pop, or (tsk, tsk, Rap). Hmmm...I might have to dust off some of my old audition tapes if I can just remember where I put those boxes. Take care, Jim. You and de pooch have a great weekend! Connell

JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Hi Jim - I love to read old radio and television trivia and enjoyed Roy Lemon's recounting of the early Fort Worth/Dallas television shows. I just had to remind Roy and everyone else that the music show Roy remembers on Channel 5 in the afternoons was in fact the show that Pat Boone started his career on. Pat was a student at, what then was, North Texas State and drove down to Fort Worth's WBAP, Channel 5, to do the show each afternoon. Some may remember the setting was a soda fountain and Pat was the "soda jerk", as they call them back then. As They say, the rest is history! Thanks, Jim, For all you do! Jay

WBAP TV CH 5 in Ft. Worth has an American Bandstand type TV show they call Teenage Downbeat in the Fabulous Fifties, In 1959 while in the ninth grade my cute girlfriend who is the now the internationally famous historic romance novelist Parris Afton Bonds asks me to bring some records from my collection over to her house. She prepares tuna fish sandwiches for us to munch while we listen to the latest hit tunes. Parris really likes my copy of the Casuals' tune So Tough. So do I and I have a story why. Before this she visits Ft. Worth's Teenage Downbeat TV show and wins a copy of Bells in My Heart by New Orleans R&B group The Spiders but wants to trade it for my Casuals record. No! I say. But when I get home discover that my record by the Casuals is missing but in its place is the Spiders record. This ends what possibly is one of the world's most historic romances of all time. Memories are made of this.

HOUSTON'S LEGENDARY KNUZ-1230 and KLDE FM DJ Joe Ford's response about his brother the singer Neal Ford is below. Also, Barry Kaye still is an awesome radio voice. Joe and Barry are DJs on Oldies KLDE FM here in Houston for several years. Both are top flight radio airmen.

JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX)
Absolutely! Neal was the leader of a very popular local group in the 60's & early 70's. When I had a TV show on Channel 39, Neal Ford and The Fanatics were the house band! They had several local hits and fans thought we were brothers. The "brother" thing was good publicity so we decided to go along with it. It worked well for both of us. To this day people ask me about my "brother" Neal. The truth is...there is no relation. The last time I spoke with Neal he was managing bands in Nashville but that's been several years ago.

JONATHAN SWIFT (1667-1745) A penny for your thoughts.
