THE EYES OF TEXAS CREATOR RIDES OFF INTO THE SUNSET
A Houston, TX radio-TV Newscaster, News Director and pioneer origininator for over 50 years, Ray Miller, passes into the night at 89. Ray is a member of the KPRC-950 radio staff when the Hobby family, its owners, decide to move into the hot new thing on the scene, Television. The Hobbys buy Houston's KLEE TV CH2 and change its call letters to KPRC TV. Miller serves as KPRC TV News Director in the 1960s and '70s before he retires in 1979. Among future well-known names in his news staff are former CBS anchor Dan Rather and future Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas. Senator Hutchison remembers Ray Miller: Ray never understood the word mediocre. He always went for the best. He wanted to do not just a job, but he wanted to do a job well. Phil Archer, who Miller hires in 1976 at 25, says He had incredible intellect, practically glowed in the dark. Ray begins a popular TV program which we all enjoy very much, The Eyes of Texas. Miller's 30-minute show features interesting people, places and things throughout the great state of Texas. After Ray retires a well-respected CH2 TV news anchor Ron Stone takes the reins of The Eyes of Texas. According to our sources Ray Miller's funeral is Friday, October 3, 2008 at St. Michael's Catholic Church here in Houston. Ray leaves behind his son, U.S. District Judge Gray Miller of Houston.

NAB PUSHES AM FM HD ONTO SATELLITE RADIO
Remember when our nation's leaders consider satellite radio? Two companies vie for their spots in our sky - XM and Sirius. They quickly put their Yes on the dotted line that dictates the two shall never merge to form a monopoly. Well what do we have in 2008? Our nation's leaders vote to let XM and Sirius join hands, marry and become one. But a few tiny things slip by our government when they give the OK for the merger. The boys and girls on Capitol Hill and the National Association of Broadcasters want to declare that AM, FM and HD reception on satellite radio receivers become the law of the land, too. Ed Markey (D-MA) leads a bipartisan effort in the House. Greg Walden (R-OR) a former small radio group owner is among the co-sponsors of the Radio All Digital Channel Receiver Act, H.R. 7157. Lee Terry (R-NE), Charlie Gonzalez (D-TX), Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Dan Burton (R-IN) join the wild bunch. The NAB stands up and yells Let's do it to it! David K. Rehr, NAB President and CEO, says, NAB salutes the leadership of Chairman Markey and a bipartisan group of lawmakers for sponsoring this important bill that will boost the integration of HD Radio in satellite radio receivers, including those installed in automobiles.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Subject: Jack Ruby at KLIF...Dave Michael's question about Jack Ruby at KLIF the night before he shot Oswald... Jack Ruby at KLIF? Yes. I was there. So was Russ Knight. My testimony is in the Warren Commission report under the name "Danny Patrick McCurdy". So is Russ's. The night before he shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby was with me in the control room of KLIF…he was there for the better part of an hour discussing his feelings about the assassination of President Kennedy. All of us at the radio station knew Jack...he even brought sandwiches and soft drinks to the station that night, knowing that the news guys and DJs all were working extra shifts. Jack tried to hobnob with us, as he did regularly with the police department...all in an effort to curry favor and maybe get a periodic mention of his two Dallas exotic establishments (which he never got from any of us DJs)...also he brought doughnuts, etc., to the Dallas police department offices, again in an effort to gain favor with the department and members of the force. It was well known that he most always carried a weapon with him since he carried large sums of cash regularly. All of us knew him...we knew he was an ex-Chicago tough-guy who loved playing the role of personal b ouncer in both of his establishments (The Carousel Club downtown and the Vegas Club on Oaklawn in Dallas). My best to you, Jim and all your readers. - Dan McCurdy (Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick - KLIF, KBOX, WMEX-Boston) Inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame - 2004.

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Glad to hear you are O. K. and have power. Amazing... God bless you my friend. Great story... Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."
SHIRLEY ROSE-REPASS (New Orleans-Mandeville, LA) Hey! Well, I see you came out OK, thank goodness. I tried to call a couple of times over the weekend, but the lines were busy. Once I got through and left a message, but I wasn't sure whether or not you actually had power. Sometimes you're not sure with the answering machines. Sounds like you had a ferocious storm, but nothing too bad on your side of town! Downtown looked pretty hard hit, of course, with the skyscrapers, but I guess that was to be expected. Galveston was hit the hardest. I hope there weren't too many who lost their lives on that island. I'll try to call either tonight or tomorrow. Love, Shirley
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, Well...........? We here in Marshalll did have some mighty trees fall and take some power lines. I saw what looked like two new utility poles that were side by side torn in half. The wind did not seem that strong here in Marshall. I have experienced much stronger wind in Abilene, Midland, Lubbock, Canyon, and Amarillo. I was without electricity from 3:20 p.m. Saturday to about 7 p.m. Sunday. Leslie Wayne Hodges
TRIVIA ANSWER: Folks in Jacksonville, FL know aboutThe Jug in Lynyrd Skynyrd's tune Gimme Three Steps. US 17 (Roosevelt Boulevard) intersects with San Juan Avenue. On the right corner is a popular redneck bar that in the past is known as The Jug.
EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) It is Evelyn Allen. My address is Kemp; but that is rural mail. I live in the county just out of Tool, Texas. Live next door to my sister Joan Day. It is a block away; but it really is next door. Enjoy reading your e-mail. I see so many names that I have heard Sam mention through the years. Glad you made it through Ike. Hope you have power on by now.
MARTHA THRASHER (D/FW-Farmers Branch, TX) My sister and her family in Pearland are "hunkered down" in their travel trailer today after their power went out last night around 9 PM. The trailer has a generator and I think they are using it to keep their refrigerator going. Hope you and Tejas do OK! Martha Joe
WENDEL HULSE (D/FW-Grand Prairie, TX) We are so glad that you and Tejas have been able to avoid the worst of Ike. Stay dry!
BLAISE PASCAL (June 19, 1623-August 19, 1662) We sail within a vast sphere, ever drifting in uncertainty, driven from end to end.
