STONEWALL SETTLES WITH THE OPRY

In 2007 legendary Country music performer Stonewall Jackson files an age discrimination lawsuit against the Grand Ole Opry for $10 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damage. The 75-year-old singer claims that he loses his health insurance through the Opry because general manager Pete Fisher reduces his personal appearances. We fondly remember Jackson's #1 country hits Waterloo (1959) and B.J. the D.J. (1963) as well as his many other hits. Well all parties come to terms. Stonewall Jackson settles his federal age discrimination lawsuit against the Grand Ole Opry and its management. The terms of the settlement remain hidden. Stonewall Jackson is back on the Opry stage picking and he grins a lot.

JOYCE WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Jim, For some reason I've always had terrible radio reception in my little house here in Mena. No one has ever been able to quite figure out why. I live close to the station, and we are in a mountainous area. When I first came here, it was an AM and an FM...and their signal was all over the place. The FCC didn't bother with our area at all, and the station took advantage of it, too. These days it seems the FCC bothers with not much of anything, either. I rarely listen to radio but I did catch part of that song by Larry G. the last time I was driving. Sounded like a great song. Larry and his brothers grew up with Southern Gospel, as I did, and it seems they've all pretty much gotten their lives back on track. Just so you know, I forward your report to as many radio people or radio fans as I can but not each day, enough to get them interested. These are going to be some really tough times for a lot of us, Jim. We all need to hold each other up, and do what we can for each other. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Always, JC

JESSE C. SMITH JR. (Houston-Tomball, TX)
Hi Jim, It is so good to find your writings again. I still have the old band from 1970 called Jesse Smith & The Lonestar Cowboys. We were real busy in the KENR, KIKK and KNUZ days. Arch Yancey, Hal McClaine and Bruce Nelson helped us stay busy. The same old music I have done for years will actually draw a crowd in Austin. Most of the new Houston crowd has no idea what Western Swing is. I always appreciated the way you treated us with respect when our careers would cross. I am going to add a link to my Texas Music blog so more of my old crowd can keep up with you. Have you heard this band out of San Antonio called TwoTons of Steel? They have an original sound that is very good. Thanks again for your extensive knowledge you share. -- Jesse C. Smith Jr.

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Very kind words from my friend and former boss Andy Carr. Andy, "the Crazy Cat in the Cowboy Hat," is Country radio legend. Andy was one of my radio idol's growing up in San Antonio and the first of which, I was fortunate to have worked with. Other San Antonio legends include, Don Couser, Bruce Hathaway, Captain K, Ricci Ware, George Cooper, Barry Kaye, Lee Randall, Lee Taylor and Pat Tallman. Funny story about Couser, Don was one of my college radio instructors. When I returned to San Antonio in '79 Don was doing mornings at KONO and I was brought in as a salesperson. Prior to my arrival, advertisers had been filled with many false promises and what I believed to be true was no longer a valid presentation. I spent most of my time arranging promotions for the programming staff which included San Antonio's first major gas giveaway, insuring KONO listeners from being hit by fallen pieces while handing out T-Shirts that read, "Chicken Little Was Right." One day, during a sales meeting, a fight broke out over a candy bar. After breaking up the fight, I dumped my brief case out on the Sales manager's desk stating, "I'm on the street fighting for advertisers while you guys are fighting amongst yourselves over a candy bar. I'm out of here. Before pulling out of the parking lot, I realized that I was new in town, out of work and out of money. I went back in the station and told Jo Jo Kincaid, KONO PD at the time that I had quit sales and asked him, "If I could do a weekend shift to earn some gas money. Jo Jo asked, "You quit? Whose gonna get all our prizes for giveaway. Hang on!" Jo Jo got up, left his office and after a bit of screaming came back and said, "Congratulations, you're our new afternoon drive person. You're on the air in thirty seconds." About six weeks later, Jo Jo headed back to Boston and I was made the PD. After three months we went from a 2.5 to a 6.5 and was number two in 25-54 adults. in typical Jack Roth fashion, the day the book came out, I was told over the phone that I was no longer the PD and was now the promotions director for the stations. The following morning, I saw Couser in the hallway and he said, "When you took over as PD, I had my doubts. But, I just want to tell you, I think you did one hell of a good job." It was a great compliment from Couser that day as it was when Andy hired me back in 1972. All the best! Billy T

TRIVIA ANSWER: Fanatic fan Mark David Chapman shoots former Beatle John Lennon to death in front of the entrance to his luxury home at The Dakota on December 8, 1980.

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Paul Newman and Butch & The Kid. Isn’t funny, the things we remember. It was Christmas Day in 1969 and my brother and I went to see BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID. We were 12 & 13 respectively and thought it was a great movie. Of course we come from the generation that loved westerns. Gonna look in the fridge and see if we have any NEWMAN’S OWN for my salad tonight…in his honor. Last night MSNBC played an interview clip with GENE SHALIT where he asks Paul what his epitaph would read. Shalit said his would read I WON’T BE BACK AFTER THESE MESSAGES. Paul didn’t know his, but I thought immediately that it could be CUT…THAT’S A WRAP. Toss Tejas a num-num and have a BIG week. MARK CARRILLO

CHARLIE DANIELS (October 28, 1936-p) A brief candle; both ends burning An endless mile; a bus wheel turning A friend to share the lonesome times A handshake and a sip of wine So say it loud and let it ring We are all a part of everything The future, present and the past Fly on proud bird You're free at last. Written en route to the funeral of his friend, Ronnie Van Zant of Rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
