IT'S A SIGN OF THE TIMES

On Tuesday, October 7, 2008 a significant number of employees at Denver, CO’s KWGN TV CH2 receive permanent furlough papers. This is part of a consolidation edict with KDVR TV CH31 as the two merge their operations. Dennis O’Brien, KWGN TV CFO, says, Employees at Channel 2’s Denver Tech Center studios were notified of the layoffs Tuesday. Were there a significant number [laid off]? Yes. The separately owned channels 2 and 31 have joint managers since October 1, 2008. Is this the sign of things to come? Dennis adds, Local TV Holdings LLC owns Channel 31, which is a Fox network affiliate, while Channel 2, a CW affiliate, is owned by Tribune Co. Channel 2 plans to relocate its operations and staff to the Channel 31 offices at 100 E. Speer Blvd. by early next year. Dennis Leonard, the new KDVR GM, is now in charge of both TV stations. Dennis says, The newscasts and sales departments remain separate, but there would be consolidation involving the back office and newsgathering areas. The two stations would share camera crews and editors. O’Brien confirms that Carl Bilek, KWGN TV's news director, has not been retained.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Another radio-tv pioneer from our era is gone! Just learned of death of DJ, writer, producer, TV host, Lloyd Thaxton of multiple myeloma in Studio City, CA on Oct. 5, 2008. B. Memphis, 5/31/27; hosted Tv's Lloyd Thaxton Show on west coast that featured acts such as: Sonny & Cher, Byrds, Jan & Dean, Righteous Bros, Turtles, Bobby Fuller Four (of Texas) & about every other hit-maker over the years. He also recorded, "Image of a Surfer." You probably have all this info, but share in event it missed you. Your "reporter" on-duty, Col. Robert Hanger.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, You say Michael O'Shea and Bob Morrison in your little email from me. Did you say you were at KLIF in Dallas in 1972? When did you leave KLIF? You must remember Joe Holstead, the News Director...great guy! Michael O'Shea was Program Director at KLIF in 1972. I worked there in programming under him and later Dave Ambrose. Michael went on to various successes...National PD for more than one company, including Golden West Broadcasting in Los Angeles. He's been in Florida, Seattle, and other places in various capacities. A very talented and experienced radio person. Bob Morrison of KVIL DFW fame, also worked for various radio stations, don't think I could name them all. Big guy. Great voice and lots of talent! He is still in radio in Dallas. Don't want Michael or Bob to think I referred to them as Starr employees or as Stars...although they both have been, and in my opinion still are. Nice people both, and they deserve to be in the TRHOF. Manygreat people are in the TRHOF...so it only becomes more meaningful! Other inductees for 2008: Sammy Allred, KVET Austin; Bob Cole, KVET Austin; Dave Cooke KRLD DFW; John Hicks, Jr., KLVI Beaumont; Josh Holstead (Rowdy Yates) KILT FM Houston; Jo Interrante KNUS DFW; Joe Leonard, Jr. KGAF Gainesville; C.C. McCartney KRBE Houston, J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) KTRM Beaumont; Jerry Thomas, KNOK DFW. I worked for Starr Broadcasting Group at their station KDTX/KMGC in Dallas, and later in a corporate capacity. I then went to KNUS/KLUV...my final involvement in radio in Dallas. JC

KLIF-1190 in my home town of Dallas, TX in 1972 is the place to be when News Director Ted Agnew adds me to his news staff as a newsaster. Michael O'Shea is Program Director. Mike Selden is afternoon drive DJ. Remember Pulse? That's the main radio rating service of the day. If I remember correctly Mike polls 100% of all Dallas teens in that particular survey. Completely unheard of anywhere in radio. Lance Rentzel is the star wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. His wife is the lovely actress Joey Heatherton. Dickie Heatherton is a DJ on KLIF during my time behind the news mic. He tells me one day that Joey is his sister. DJ John Butler with his deep voice draws listeners to their speakers like magnets. In the news department Bruce Hughes is the main man with the news. KLIF the Mighty 11-90 is the best and most listened to radio station in our land. Words do not describe the feeling one gets while behind the mic at KLIF-1190 when it is at the top of its game. Well in San Antonio John Rhodes moves over from KTSA-550 to head the news department of KITE-930. John makes me an offer that I cannot refuse. So it's back to the Alamo City for the PM Drive news spot on KITE. On the surface this is a great move on my part but have no earthly idea what lies ahead. Proves to be one of the biggest mistakes in my long radio career. Live and learn.

Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #566 Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Portland, OR. Russell Barnett KILE Galveston, Texas 1976-1980

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim; I really enjoyed Bobby Reyes description of the Clear Channel facility in San Antonio. It was much different when I worked there in the mid 1980's. Back then it was just WOAI and KAJA. John Barger was the Vice President back then. He had an office on the ground floor, by the back door. He bought the property and designed the first facilities, when WOAI moved from the KMOL-TV facility on St. Marys downtown. One distinctive feature of the facility, before it was remodeled, was the width of the hallways. They were quite narrow. I asked, and was told they were kept small to allow for more floorspace in the studios, but that each was "...exactly one Barger-width". John was quite rotund back then. If you saw him coming down the hall, you'd have to duck into a studio so he could pass. Bobby sent me some pictures from the last S.A. radio reunion, and Mr. Barger has slimmed down a lot since then. John could be a bit gruff, but I always enjoyed his respect and appreciated his honesty. Respect and honesty are two traits I look for in a boss. bc

Even those who write against fame wish for the fame of having written well, and those who read their works desire the fame of having read them.
