ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HOUSTON TV CHOPPER CRASHES
Federal and state authorities investigate the site where a KTRK TV CH13 helicopter crashes in thick woods in Montgomery County on Monday, October 13, 2008. The impact kills the pilot and a photographer who are on their way to cover a nearby news story. KTRK says it loses contact with the aircraft about 11:15 am. The two men who die in the crash are pilot John Downhower and TV photographer Dave Garrett. Downhower's employer is Helicopters Incorporated the owner of the avion. Garrett is a Westwood One Metro News employee. Texas DPS trooper Sgt. Kenneth Hiebert reports that the two are on their way to the scene of a shooting about four miles from the crash site. Sgt. Hiebert saysThe helicopter went down about 200 feet off Peoples Road near Pine Acres Road, west of Interstate 45 in the W.G. Jones State Forest. The spot is about one mile south of FM 1488. The craft came down at a sharp angle, hit the ground and bounced up into the trees. It was shattered by the impact and both men were ejected. Seva Kaiser, spokeswoman for Helicopters, says the aircraft is a 1993 Bell 206L4. The company leases aircraft to about 70 news organizations throughout the USA. In Houston, TX Helicopters also leases helicopters to KPRC TV Channel 2 and to Westwood One's Metro Traffic. Channel 13 news anchor Art Rascon expresses his sorrow at the shocking news and gives his condolences to the families of Garrett and Downhower. During his newscast Art says Having been in and out of that chopper many times and working with the gentlemen involved here, it certainly is a heartbreaking story we bring to you.

BILL SHOMETTE JR (DFW-Richardson, TX)
To: Bob Crowley. Cc: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Subject: Great Memories. Bob, In the last "Jim Rose Remembers..." you talked about WOAI studios on St. Marys and that brought back some great memories. Dad was Radio Farm Director at WOAI for about 13 years, on the radio from 5 - 7 each morning. Then each weekday morning at 7:30 AM he MCed a live country music show, Radio Rodeo, with Curley Williams, Patsy Clay, Spud Goodale, Mel Winters and others. Radio Rodeo was also broadcast Saturday nights with additional guests. It was a real treat when he would take me to work with him mornings when school was out. I have attached a recording I found of the Saturday night show. When WOAI started broadcasting TV the same characters were part of TV Dude Ranch. For a period of time Pedro Gonzales Gonzales was part of TV Dude Ranch before he was discovered after appearing on the Graucho Marx Show. I attached an MP3 File you might enjoy. I wish it was possible to get more recordings like this. Bill Shomette

JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) I thought about you Jim, when KXAS-TV here in Fort Worth celebrated it's 60 anniversary as a television station recently, the first television station in Texas. Some of the history was printed in the local newspaper, the Star-Telegram. One of the shows mentioned to be on WBAP was "Barn Dance" a teen variety show hosted by then-North Texas State University student Pat Boone, who would go on to be one of the biggest hitmakers of the late ’50s and who continues to perform. You'll recall that you and I discussed that show and I had thought it was set in a drug store-soda fountain backdrop. Have a good time!

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: New Entry at Jim Rose Remembers Radio. JRRR issue #565. Well, you've done it again, by mentioning someone in my past that brought back memories. I had pleasure of presenting the "Menzies-Family (of singers) on stage at East Coast Talent Championship Contest (annually), Eastside Speedway, Waynesboro, VA....must have been 1969 or 1970 & I believe they won the event, with Tim Menzies & his extended family of singers, with Mom,Dad & all the siblings. They lived in Mechanicsville, suburban Richmond, VA. Had not heard of him again until your issue. That annual event drew many good acts, & some went on to stardom. Other shows at that venue for which I was M/C included George Jones, Mac Wiseman, Buck Owens, Sheb Wooley, Tex Ritter (his sons Tom & John Ritter made that trip w/Dad & I got to introduce both on stage with his show), etc. These were just some of the great acts that appeared there over those years. Thanks for reigniting some good-ole days from radio back in the "colonies.!" Col. Robert Hanger

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Cool. The CD's are from my fantasy Armadillo World radio stations. There's one for Tx Country, TX Oldies and for Classic Texas Artists. I had talked to you about them before but I don't have sent you a copy of the hour demos. I heard about your car conking out and am sorry to hear that. I have been without a vehicle for 4 years now. Kinda odd when my favorite pastime is driving. Anyway, I sent you 40 bucks which you should get by Monday or Tuesday. I hope that helps. If I was rich, I would send you 40 buicks instead. All the best! Billy t

ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX)
Subject: Jimroseremembersradio.com has a traffic rank of 3,064,003. What would be the possibility of running a story/ad in your column that you're looking for someone that is web site savvy that could volunteer to build a very simple web site, with options to run ads, for you and/or somebody that could add something to your current blog site (like a "donation" button connected to PayPal)?

EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849) Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary.
