BATMAN COMPOSER DIES
To us ardent Batman fans the TV series is the real deal. The music is also a knockout. The genius behind TV's Batman music is Big Band trumpeter/arranger and composer Neal Hefti. Neal's son Paul says that he dies unexpectedly at 85 on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at his home. Neal Hefti's 1960s Batman theme song becomes a Top 40 radio hit. In 1966 the song wins a Grammy Award for best instrumental theme. Neal does TV's The Odd Couple sound track, movies Barefoot in the Park and Harlow, too. Hefti's son says that the Batman theme is his dad's most difficult piece. It takes him at least one month to compose the driving bass and explosive trumpet bursts. Paul Hefti tells The Associated Press, He threw away more music paper on this thing than any other song, It got down to the blues with a funny guitar hook, the lowest common denominator and a fun groove. He didn't write songs in between jobs and when he retired he never wrote another song. Former KMPC-710 Hollywood, CA radio personality and co-star on TV's Laugh In, Gary Owens, who is a longtime friend, tells the Los Angeles Times, He was one of the really great arrangers and composers of all time. Neal Hefti is born on October 29, 1922 in Hastings, NB. As a teen he plays trumpet with local bands to earn money. In his adult life, Neal works with and arranges music for the greats of the Big Band era that includes Count Basie, Woody Herman, Charlie Spivak and Harry James.

LAYOFFS IN THE SKY
As we all know Sirius satellite radio and its lone competetitor XM recently merge. Sirius acquires XM in summer 2008 for about $3.3 billion. CEO, Mel Karmazin, alerts investors and analysts in September that Sirius XM Radio loses about $350 million this year with revenue of $2.4 billion. Sirius XM Radio lays off at least 50 employees on Wednesday. October 15, 2008 that includes on- and off-air talent on channels with formats that range from Oldies to modern-day Rock. XM DJ Kandy Klutch says, It's not a surprise at all. It's actually a relief. She is a DJ on XM's '80s channel with XM since 2001. Matt Baldassarri, Washington-based DJ who until Wednesday night hosts a show called Night Prowl with music from the '50s says it shocks him when he finds out he loses his job. Baldassarri just marries a week and a half ago and returns home from his honeymoon with the breaking news: This is probably going to be one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Analysts say that as the merged companies consolidate their staff layoffs are to be expected. April Horace, radio industry analyst with Janco Partners, says, It shouldn't be any surprise that some people will be relieved of their duties as a result of the merger. This is part of the overall cost synergy that Mel [Karmazin] has talked about. Mel's company's shares steadily decline even before the stock market's recent difficulties. A year ago, his shares trade at almost $4. On Wednesday, October 15, 2008 the satellite radio company's shares close at a remarkable 42 cents.

Regarding Joe H., he may have spoken gruffly but he had a heart of gold, seriously. He was a very sweet man. He came to KLIF after Ted so you must have been there during the early months of 1972. I'm sure my friend Scott would tell you the same thing, that Joe H. was a nice man. I remember being intimidated by him the first time I met him, but he turned out to have a wonderful sense of humor, and he helped a lot of people. He made a wonderful friend. Later, JC
SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport, LA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #568. Good morning Jim, seems you and I had a similar experience at one time. I was anchoring news at WTIX New Orleans for Jim Swiler in 1968 when I first heard from John Rhodes at KTSA. I, along with the late Art Kevin from KHJ were covering the Clay Shaw Conspiracy trial in the Crescent city at the time. John made me an offer. I opted instead for an anchor slot at KTVE-TV 10 where I worked for Mack Ward and co-anchored the 6 and 10 with Chuck Machen and Clay Scott. While at KTVE John made me another offer to join his news staff at KTSA. After a while I accepted, packed the wife and new daughter up and off we went to the Alamo city. Biggest mistake for me too. However, all worked out well after Kahn L. Hammon introduced me to Roy Eaton at WBAP Ft. Worth. Eaton made a slot for me there. Was at WBAP for only 3 months when Art Kevin made an opening for me at KHJ in L.A. This slot ultimately took me to the top news slot at New York's WXLO-FM with Jerry Clifton. I literally hated New York City so I returned to Seattle, then to Dallas at KLIF with Joe Holstead in '71, and in the early '80s in Dallas at KNUS with Larry James. Great ride! Worst move though was to KTSA in San Antonio. Still a great ride! Cheers, Scott (

The liberal media is just brutalizing her but I really like this woman and she is taking them all on – but I have a dreadful feeling the dark side is winning out – well you never know. People are taken by his so called charisma and he is a great orator – however that isn’t what makes the measure of the man. Here we are 3 weeks out from the election and no one really knows anything about this guy – and what’s worse don’t care. And what we do know is enough to turn your hair on fire. They just listen to all the spin and bingo – there goes the neighborhood. EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) I talked to Sam yesterday. He has been in the hospital off and on for several weeks. Seems he is losing blood somewhere and the doctor's can't find where. He gets 4 pts. blood and three or four days he has to have 4 more. This has been going on nearly a month. When Janet gets him out of the house to go anywhere he has to have a wheel chair. He can walk a short distance but it wears him completely out. I thank the guys that call or write him.
