ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

A MOTOWN VOICE SILENCES
The baritone voice singer who is the member of one of America's most beloved singing groups dies at 72 after a long illness in Michigan. Levi Stubbles comes to life on June 6, 1936, in Detroit, MI. We music fans know him as Levi Stubbs the lead singer of the
éclat Motown R&B group The Four Tops who mesmirize us with many wonderful tunes in the Sizzlin' Sixties and Solumn Seventies. Their first #1 hit is I Can't Help Myself in the summer of 1965. Remember that song very well because I spin their 45 rpm record as a DJ on my first radio venture on KASO-1240 in Shreveport-Minden, LA. Love all of their tunes but perhaps my favorite is one that I play in 1973 on KFJZ-1270 in Ft. Worth, TX Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got) which rises to #4. In 1954 Levi and his school chums Abdul Duke Fakir, Renaldo Obie Benson and Lawrence Payton form the Four Aims. In 1956 they change the name of their group to The Four Tops as singers in supper-clubs. In 1963 Motown records signs them to a contract and the rest is history. The Four Tops remain intact as a team until Lawrence dies in 1997, Theo Peoples takes his place. In 1990 The Four Tops become members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Renaldo dies on July 1, 2005. Levi Stubbs passes away on Friday, October 17, 2008.

WESTWOOD ONE HAS MAJOR CHANGES

On Friday evening, October 17, 2008 Westwood One ousts CEO Tom Buesse after just 10 months on the job. Reports suggest that WW1's CFO Rod Sherwood III, who joins WW1 on September 17th from L.A.-based investment fund the Gores Group becomes the new President/CEO. Since Beusse arrives, the Gores Group pours $100 million into the troubled programming distributor. All of a sudden Gores has sort of a wake up call which produces these massive changes. WW1 brings in Jones MediaAmerica SVP/COO Cathy Csukas and former Jones President Gary Shoenfeld as co-DOS's. They recently receive pink slips from Dial-Global after Jones MediaAmerica takes over. Just weeks ago WW1 fires its EVP/Sales Paul Gregrey. The recent credit crunch spells bumpy roads ahead for media companies with heavy debts on their shoulders. Then the helicopter crash north of Houston, TX near The Woodlands that we report in Friday's JRRR which causes the two onboard to die just adds to WW1's miseries. Bloomberg says that WW1 meets with financiers to either refinance or extend their $85 million in debt that comes due in 2009. What's next? Only the Shadow knows. Don't touch that dial.

TOM BIGBY EARNS HIS STRIPES

More good news for our buddy the veteran radio programmer Tom Bigby who CBS Radio recently sends to Detroit, MI to spice up the programming of Sports WXYT-1270 & WXYT FM (The Ticket 97.1). Awhile back, Tom tells me that he still maintains his mansion in Dallas, TX. He also does his best to keep the airline companies afloat with his back-and-forth journeys back home. Both cities are Big Ds but Dallas is near and dear to us Texans' hearts, plus it's my home town. Well, Tom adds a new corporate title to his already elegant radio resume. Bigby tacks on VP/Strategic Programming to his post as OM/PD of the CBS Radio operation in Motor City. In addition to the Detroit radio Sports duo his new duties include direct work with the CBS Radio corporate bunch that includes VP/Programming Chris Oliviero and SVP/Programming Greg Strassell to create and develop on-the-air and online formulas for all CBS Radio formats. Salute!

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: It's The Same Song. Hi, I just noticed Levi Stubbs has now departed company. He was only 72... I've heard that song before... I remember getting CKLW 800 with Rock but the only other station from Detroit I could hear was WJR 760. I use to enjoy listening to Captain Jay on WJR with his Jazz program, since as many Jazz artists came from Dallas it was hard to find anyone playing Jazz, and I got hooked on Jazz hearing it on KFAD before they went to Rock only. Houston and Austin would get the Big Name Artists that I wanted to hear but they did not come to Dallas. I remember KNOK had a jazz show that came on at Midnight the host used All Blues as a theme song. Charles George

JOYCE WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Hi Jim! So sad about the helicoptor crash. Thoughts and prayers are with the families and the co-workers. While I was at KLIF we had a young "gopher" named Cary who died of the London Flu. It was a very sad time. Regarding the news staff at KLIF when I was there, the team consisted of Joe Holstead, Bruce Hughes, Scott Hodges, Bob Richmond and a young woman whose name I have forgotten. I believe her first name was Gail, and I remember that she had an accident in a news car. There may have been other part-time folks I have forgotten. I particularly remember Gail as she and I once did an interview of James Drury, who starred as The Virginian on television. It seems we were having a/c problems the day he was interviewed, and I was asked to help the young woman interview him at a restaurant, watering hole down the street from KLIF. He was such an ego-maniac that I strongly disliked him. Particularly, I remember asking him if this was his first visit to Texas and how he was enjoying Dallas. His response was that he couldn't get a decent shoe shine or cigar in Texas. Years later I had an opportunity to "get even", and I did while visiting a radio friend in West Texas, in fact it was at the time Elvis passed away. That is fodder for another radio story. Hope you are making progress on getting the old transportation repaired. Always, JC

SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport, LA) Hey Jim, I mentioned 1972 at KLIF because Bob Richmond, one of the guys I worked with at the station swears up and down he was there only in '72. Personally, I recall being there during the whole of '71 when Joe Holstead hired me and Michael O'Shea was PD. J.C. was there, at the time. Bruce Hughes was there along with Ron McAllister, Sam Lee, and Lou Staples. I worked across the window from Dave Ambrose and sometimes subbed for Hughes across from Mike Seldon and Dickie Heatherton. My memory tells me I arrived at KLIF in the early spring of 71, and left for Seattle a year later. Guess you and I were special, both being hired by John Rhodes, and both feeling that was the worst career move mistake we'd made. When Rhodes hired me I came in at about the same time at KTSA with Barry Kaye, Jon Mathews, and worked with Kahn L. Hammon, Bruce Hathaway and a host of others I don't remember. By the way, any chance you will use the "donation" concept on your website and/or the CashBox site? Good luck with that and let me know how it works out. I feel certain you'll get the needed subscriptions to keep your column going and get your American Iron running again. Cheers and best regards, Scott Hodges, CEO; On Hold Marketing of America, LLC; Shreveport, LA (

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX)
There was a time when static was limited to the radio dial. Eventually, it crept into our radio lives. b

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1975 Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of The Arrows write and record the very first version of the song I Love Rock 'n Roll and release it on on RAK Records but the tune never hits the national chart. Mickie Most is the producer. Joan Jett and Britney Spears each record their covers of the song and receive international chart success.

CICERO (106 BC-43 BC) The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.
