TV WEATHERCASTER DIES
Syracuse, NY’s first TV meteorologist Horace Stormy Meredith passes away on Sunday, October 19, 2008 just four days away from his 91st birthday. Horace plays a game of golf with his daughter at Liverpool Golf and Country Club, becomes ill and dies at University Hospital. Meredith is a champion senior golfer who plays every day. As a meteorologist he first is with NewsChannel 9 (then WNYS-TV). During the Blizzard of '66 he calls in reports and forecasts from his home. Stormy is known for his weather cube map that he uses to indicate weather patterns and forecast terms. He stays at channel 9 for twelve years. In the early 1980’s he returns as a part-time weekend meteorologist. Horace Meredith is born in Guilford, NC on October 23, 1917. He studys meteorology at Western Carolina University. In 1942 he joins the US Air Force as a cadet. His military career takes him to France, Germany and Okinawa. In 1965 he retires as a lieutenant colonel at Hancock Field in Syracuse. He and his wife, Mildred, just celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Horace Meredith leaves behind his wife and three daughters. Burial is in the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetary.

TV ANCHOR SURVIVES BEATING
A popular TV anchorwoman in Little Rock, AR who has a small part in the Bush biopic W is in critical but stable condition on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 after she suffers a severe beating in her home. The 26 year-old Anne Pressly's personality makes her a hit with Little Rock's ABC affiliate KATV TV viewers. Police Investigators do not know if this is a home invasion or if she is a target because of her high-profile job. Cassandra Davis, police spokeswoman, says (It) is possible that it is something other than robbery. Our detectives are talking with co-workers because she was a public figure, because she was on the news, in the media. On Monday just a half-hour before she is due on the set of Daybreak her mother, Patricia Cannady, finds her in her bed battered, bloodied and unresponsive after she doesn't answer her wake-up call. Cassandra describes her injuries as severe wounds and that she suffers stab wounds. The KATV Web site says that her most notable interview is with Vice President Dick Cheney who travels through an Arkansas town. Anne finds the highway blocked in front of a hunting goods store because Cheney is inside. Pressly asks for an interview. She talks with the VP in the ammunition aisle.

PERRY MICHAEL SIMON (Malibu, CA) So, you got laid off, huh? Sorry to hear that. I'm always sorry to hear that. And I'm hearing that so much lately, it's...depressing...Anyway, you got the ax, and your head is spinning. I know the feeling, although in my case(s), I saw the ax coming sufficiently early to go through the whole Kübler-Ross Five Stages of Grief before getting called into the General Manager's office. You know the five stages: Denial ("They can't fire me - the ratings were UP in Men 49-54 in our Hot Zips!"), Anger ("You #(%!& glorified salesman! You're ruining radio! Why, I oughta...."), Bargaining ("Wait! I'll do overnights! Weekends! I'll board op!"), Depression ("Why bother? I'll eventually get replaced with syndication anyway"), and Acceptance ("Well, that didn't work out. Maybe I ought to update my resume. Do I have a resume?"). You're probably somewhere early in the process right now. Let it play out. It always does...Stay confident in yourself. Your unemployment doesn't necessarily mean you suck. Good people, talented people, worthy people get fired. I mean, this is radio - getting fired is part of the tradition. And, above all... good luck. This, too, shall pass. BOB GRANT (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) From: tracy@hillbillyhits.com Subject: Joe Paul Nichols Diagnosed With ALS. Texas Country Music Legend Joe Paul Nichols has announced that he has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Joe Paul is currently feeling great and he and his wife Carolyn are currently researching various options for Joe Paul. He is also in the process of working on his book about his life in Country Music. The book will look at not only Joe Paul's extradionary life, but also a glimpse into the music business during the last five decades. "Joe Paul was one of the first entertainers that we ever had the opportunity to book," Tracy Pitcox said. "Not only is Joe Paul a great entertainer, but he is also one of the truly greatest men that I have ever had the pleasure of calling friend." Joe Paul may be contacted at 301 North Church Street; Jacksboro, Texas 76458.
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Hall of Fame. Jim; I've been pleased to get to know Larry Dixon these past few weeks. You may recall Larry from the glory days of KVIL and later from KLUV. Now he's the morning man on our sister station, the new KPMZ-FM, Platnum 96.7. What a prince of a man. His side-kick is Gail Lightfoot, another wonderful person. As I write this, I recall that both Larry and our own WBAP morning man Hal Jay were inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame last year. This year, four more people I have worked with are being inducted, including Sammy Allred and Bob Cole (from KVET) as well as Bob Morrison and Dave Cooke (who I know from my days at KRLD). I don't get out much these days, but I've got my ticket to this Sunday's TRHoF induction, and am looking forward to it. Bob Crowley
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) OK, plans are now set for the DFW Radio Lunch Bunch for this Friday 10/24 at the usual place, Boston's Pizza in Irving, 635/LBJ just west of MacArthur (on the WB service road.) We'll meet around 12:30 PM. Same as usual...no speeches or agendas, just mingling amongst old friends and making new ones...and perhaps a little networking? Come and go as you please, and it's Dutch treat, so everyone pays for their own. It's open to any radio people, anywhere, from any era, and even TV folks are welcome to come by. And it's ok if you're a present/former/"on the beach" radio person...we don't care...plus there's plenty of opportunities for networking! Please shoot me an email to RSVP to the Lunch Bunch so I can get a rough head count. mike@knus99.com (or shannon914@wans.net) let me know ASAP...c'mon by! See ya there! Thanks! Mike Shannon (www.knus99.com/)
