ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

O'REILLY IS STILL A FOX ON THE RUN
TV's most-watched personality on cable news signs a new four-year contract with Fox News Channel that reports suggest are for $10 million a year. Bill O'Reilly, the Conservative host of The O'Reilly Factor, tops the list of cable news shows in the 8 pm time period for a long time. O'Reilly's ratings prove his knock-out punch. He averages 2.9 million viewers in the third quarter. That figure is up 42% from his 2007 number. Bill issues a statement: I decided to come back because under (FNC chief exec) Roger Ailes, Fox News is a great place to work. And, if I retired, I know my friends in the elite media would miss me greatly. He also says that he wants to retire from his nationally syndicated Westwood One radio show which draws about 3.5 million listeners. O'Reilly tells the New York Daily News: I can't work 60 hours a day. I'm going to have to make some kind of adjustments. In an interview with the Washington Post, O'Reilly indicates that he likely gives up the radio talk show by early next year. He never mentions how long he wants to remain on our TV screens. He does say: I'm not going to be Andy Rooney, much as I respect him. There comes a point where what you're doing isn't worth it anymore. I don't need any money.

FAIRNESS DOCTRINE REARS ITS UGLY HEAD
U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman [D-NM] says in his recent appearance on Jim Villanucci's show on Citadel Talk KKOB-770 in Albuquerque, NM that he wants the Fairness Doctrine to return. He also states that he wants KKOB change its Conservative format. KKOB host Villanucci asks the senator if he wants our government to force changes in KKOB's programming. Does an Obama administration push to reinstate the repealed Fairness Doctrine? The U.S. Democratic senator Bingaman from NM bluntly states, I would. I would want this station and all stations to have to present a balanced perspective and different points of view instead of always hammering away at one side. I think that radio and media in general should have a higher calling than just reflecting a particular point of view. For many, many years we operated under a Fairness Doctrine and I think the country was well served by that. I think that public discussion was at a higher level and more intelligent in those days than it has become since. America needs our prayers in these desperate times. Hang on...here comes the night.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I admire the time you put into getting out such a great newsletter. I was thinking of in school my grandmother would send me some extra money as a gift for my birthday, Christmas, etc. She always liked a Thank You. My father told me if asked to tell her I made a sound investment knowing that it had usually been used to purchase Lps. When CDs came out my mother hated the fact they did actually sound better than Lps, she knew that my father and me would want to convert our collections. My mother's sister will be 80 in December, so the family will be having a get-together for Thanksgiving/Birthday Party in Johnson City, TN. My mother will have her birthday in November she turns 78. I am beginning to realize more and more how I was like my father, but I would not want to admit it... Since the weather has cooled down a bit, I am starting to bicycle more and taking longer trips. I find I get some places bicycling faster than using DART. Besides DART does not go certain places at all due to various reasons. Charles George

BOB GRANT (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) I am fortunate to have met most on your list: Dick Clark first time, Nashville, premiere of movie, "Nashville Rebel"; another at world premiere of The Hank Williams Story, & many times he was at the annual DJ Convention, Nashville..those I attended from 1954 to 1960 & then 1961 to 1973. There is where I also meet Chill Wills (from Seagoville,TX, 1902-12/15/78). Met George Kennedy at Sun City Sr. Ctr in AZ, "Senior Expo" annual event. I never got to meet Slim Pickens (Louis Bert Lindley, Jr, 1919-12/12/83) or Lou Rawls (12/1/35-1/6/2006) Others you named I brought on stage as M/C include: Jerry Lee Lewis (5 or 6 times in VA & NC), Sonny James 2 or 3 times in VA shows.. (born James Loden 5/1/29, Hackelburg, Ala.) Glen Campbell M/C of his show at Univ. Hall, Charlottesville; (he moved a few years ago from Phoenix to Malibu); Tanya Tucker at same venue (you would enjoy her auto-bio bk, "Nickel Dreams" from 1997 -born 10/10/58, Sherman,TX; raised in Willcox, AZ, & I've seen her old house in Willcox, AZ from where Rex Allen befriended her & got her on the "Lew King Ranger" TV show in Phoenix from 1969..her Dad with her at my show in 1973, 1-yr after "Delta Dawn." I have a long list of acts at Univ. VA where I was M/C, including the Four Tops. (original four) I can provide them all upon request. Better stop this rambling until I sign back on tmrrw around 5PM. Goodnight for now, BOB

TRIVIA ANSWER: Wierd Al Yankovic's lampoon of Michael Jackson's 1983 hit Beat It is Eat It which is his biggest single. It rings the chime at #12 in 1984. Rick Derringer is the guitar picker.

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Thanks for including the item, Jim. btw- check the stock prices for my two employers... Westwood One and Citadel. Westwood One is at 15 cents...Citadel's Market Capitalization is less than the value of the DFW cluster alone...Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? bc
